Bendectin And Birth Defects (Page 24)

Updated

I took this drug in the 1970's while pregnant. Am looking for the side effects to the babies. Drug has been off the market for many years. Not sure on correct spelling. Used for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Thank you for any help you can send me. Sincerely, Dana.

Nauseating is the right word for emtridoc !!!

When you say "ignorant" do you mean ignoring data and numerous studies and instead relying on anecdotal experience without understanding the concepts of probability and chance?

I do not think it is appropriate to attack someone here. Saying that someone is ignorant or nauseating is unnecessary and does nothing to further the discussion.

I still think that some mothers/foetuses reacted to something in Bendectin/Debendox/Diclectin, perhaps even the vitamin B6 [pyridoxine] reacting with some other medication/substance ingested at the same time.

Here's an interesting article: eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2014-04/lri-lia042314.php [Large-scale identification and analysis of suppressive drug interactions] which clearly shows that medical science still has quite a ways to go yet when it comes to knowing all about drugs and how they interact with each other. It says in the article that:

"When a drug combination has an effect that is more than the sum of its parts, the patient might get too much of a good thing, and it is possible for drugs to intensify each other's toxicity as well."

I have 3 sons. The first was born in 1971 and there were no meds taken during this pregnancy. His only child is a girl who is now age 15 and an honor student with no learning disabilities. I took bendictine during the pregnancy of my 2nd and 3rd son born in 1973 + 1981. The second son has a 14 year old son who has Aspergers since age 3. Recently he's showing severe OCD. he also is socially withdrawn. The third son has 2 SONS age 5 + 3. The 5 year old has learning disabilities along with neuromuscular weakness. The 3 year old is starting to show signs of apartheid with regression of speech and social withdrawal. Could this be due to the meds I took during pregnancy? Any feedback would be appreciated. Carol L

My name is Margaret, I took bendectin in 1977 when I was pregnant with my daughter. She died in 2010 at the age of 33 from a congenital heart failure . when I got pregnant with my son 3years later I didn't take the drug..... he is fine. I strongly believe there is a connection.

Margaret, I am sorry for the loss of your daughter. As I have previously posted, my son died when he was 31 in 2009 from sudden cardiac death. I have always believed that taking bendectin in 1978 during my pregnancy resulted in his heart arrhythmia.

I have had extremely painful menses, so much they gave me surgery for the pain. I'm deaf in my right ear and hard of hearing in my left. I'm legally blind - my glasses are so thick & I got them when I was 6. I have major migraines. Extreme mood swings. I have a degenerated nerve disease now, and I walk with a limp and have to hold on to something. I get the ringing in my ear and dizzy. Nausea. My limbs twitch as well. Anxiety and a bunch of other issues.

Regarding not only Bendectin/Debendox/Diclectin [and now of course Diclegis] but also many another drug besides [if not all of them], we must remain ever mindful of this very important fact. Given that many drugs [if not all of them] have a long list of side effects that always accompanies their being released into the community along with the drugs per se, have a think about this:

Whenever I've taken a prescribed medication for the very first time, I've always had a good read of the known side effects, which are specified in the literature accompanying the drug/medication. Most often, the list of known side effects is quite lengthy, yet in most cases [if not all of them in fact (for me anyway)] when I've taken these drugs I've not experienced any of the known listed side effects written on the drug's packaging or on the small sheet of printed matter to be found inside the packet. So, why it is that I've not experienced a single one of the myriad side effects listed for each of these drugs that I took? Not a single one! Evidently, many other people have -- in their own individual way -- experienced some of these listed side effects from the exact same drugs prescribed them that I've also taken over many years...but not me! Have you ever looked at the long list of side effects accompanying a drug and thought to yourself that if it is a fact that there's so many possible [and actual] side effects that could be suffered then it might be better not to take the particular drug because you might suffer many of the listed side effects all in one hit...enough of them in fact to occasion perniciousness?

We must also remain ever mindful that it is the drug companies themselves who print and provide the details about the known side effects that can be experienced by the consumers of these many marketed drugs. So, if everyone who takes these drugs with the myriad listed side effects doesn't experience any -- or several/many/all -- of the listed side effects [like I didn't] then it clearly shows that many people do in fact react to the same particular drug/s quite differently, just like I believe that many pregnant moms/mums and their foetuses reacted quite differently to Bendectin/Debendox/Diclectin and now of course Diclegis!

If it is true that any one drug has such a long list of known side effects but not everyone who takes this drug experiences at least one of the many known and listed side effects then this does in fact prove that one size does not fit all when it comes down to taking any particular drug.

When you take a drug do you automatically also want to experience [suffer?] any -- or all -- of the listed [not to mention any still unknown and unlisted ones] side effects? Chances are that you may not but it's obvously still very much but that of a lucky d_ip'so facto.

Possible side effects! Is it then not possible -- in any way whatsoever -- that these particular drugs [*Bendectin/Debendox/Diclectin*] could -- whether entirely on their own or in concert with some other drug/s taken -- have caused some foetal malformations, with these malformations being caused solely by another side effect [given there's already so many of them]? There can't be any less side effects than those already known and listed but there can of course be some more.

All of the myriad known and listed side effects to the many drugs already on the market did not all surface at the same time. It took many years for many of the side effects to be recognised and accepted for what they were, and of course for the public to be informed of them, and it's quite possible that -- in time -- drugs like Bendectin/Debendox/Diclectin will be removed from the market when it's shown that they are in fact teratogenic...but this will not likely happen until such time that another drug/s is trialled within the community. Some drugs are trialled a very long time before being withdrawn, and for whatever reason. Look how long it took for thalidomide to stopped being prescribed to pregnant women. It's still being prescribed for other purposes but every now and then we hear of it's still being given to an unsuspecting pregnant mom/mum somewhere.

I was a.debendox baby. I am malformed on the inside.everything from my sinuses to a simply operation to have my gall bladder removed which can leave me in the operating theatre for 4 1/2 hours because the surgeon get in there and nothing is what it seems, i have had 4 operations for random things all on my stomach and have had the same result every time ,my spine fuses itself and they dont know why but am still not in a wheelchair as drs predicted, they will have to catch me first!, I have lessions on organs that drs cant explain and I have endometriosis, and wish to good that I had one day without pain. I am the only one of 3 children that my mother took debondox with and am the only one with unexplainable health issues. Apart from my webbed toes and miniture little finger I am fine on the outside. Drs say there was nothing in debondox that could cause malformations then please explain to me and thousands similar to me what the hell is going on with us when there is no logical or medical explanation for our health issues. Im tired, I am really really so tired of operations and pain. Thanks for listening

Hi Kirsty. I too have suffered for many years [too many] with what I thought was a sinus problem but it is instead simply 'silent reflux' [it can be a killer (Barrett's esophagus etc.) if not kept in check] which can play havoc with the nasal passages. If I take antacid tablets and chew gum [called 'sham feeding'] then my sinuses remain markedly clear. You may, like me, have a weak lower esophageal sphincter. There is a clever new process available in the US to help close the esophageal sphincter and it's called the 'LINX Reflux Management System'.

I was given Benedictine during pregnancy starting in September 1973, for severe vomiting relating to morning (ALL day) sickness. My daughter was born with "floating ribs" and now she is suffering from the SAME medical symptoms as I have been struggling with since 1974. I was diagnosed with Lupus/connective tissue disease around 1994-5 after many years of just unknown body pain, weakness, fatigue and many connective tissues (ligaments, cartilage, muscles, etc) injured through just movement! My daughter started same complaints in her 30's. I tried to get information on Bendictine for both of us with no success. Now I KNOW! Yes......Bendictine was/is a body destroyer.

I took Benedictine when I was pregnant and I couldn't keep anything down. I was only 19 and it was my first pregnancy. I took Benedictine for two weeks during my 1st month and than most of the rest of my pregnancy. My son Bobby was born March 27 1967 and became ill when he was 5 months old. He had dysagammaglobin anemia, the illness was similar to what the "boy in a Bubble" had. He died July 2th. 1968. I believe the Benedictine was the cause but it was never confirmed by doctors.
