I've used Paregoric for 15 years and can't find it. Is there anywhere in the U.S. or other countries where this can be purchased?

Betty: I wasn't able to post anything as the day after Christmas the retina of my left eye became detached and I wasn't able to read, focus, get on computer, drive, work, etc., you name it....Quite an extended recovery period and still not over. I just saw the post from Pam in So. Africa and asked her a question about the pharmacy she purchased from. I always enjoy your posts so much. I am from the east coast of Florida and still my dr. does not prescribe paregoric. He did prescribe a "morphine syrup" for a friend of mine and says it's better than paregoric, but I don't believe it.

Pam: Do you have a telephone number for that pharmacy in SA? Or, can I just write them and ask if they will send me a bottle when I send them the money first? My dr. does not prescribe it. Do you know if they mail out to the US?

Thank you.

Maryann? I'm so sorry, this is the first time I've read your post! Von's (Safeway) and Raley's in California...those are the two stores that carry it in my small town...where you able to find it?

Pam? Honest, if I didn't have insurance, I would consider purchasing it in another country...BUT...do we know if we can "trust it"???

It IS expensive in US...and I guess that's the old "supply/demand" theory...it just shouldn't be that way...and yet, I guess I do understand how expensive it can be to make just a few batches at a time...

I guess I just REALLY don't understand...why, oh why, do we have to take DAILY RX's for "our problem" other than paregoric, when this basically INEXPENSIVE medication works so well? I don't think I will ever understand that...

I bought some today in Cape Town, South Africa. It is a Lennon product manufactured in SA by Pharmacare Limited, building 12, Healthcare Park, Woodlands Drive, Woodmead, 2191, SA.
It is a schedule 2 drug here so it is not kept on the open shelves but behind the counter in the pharmacy (drug store in USA) and I had to ask for it and explain why I wanted it. It was very inexpensive: R14,95 for a 20ml bottle - I think that is less than 2$. It goes by the name of Paragoriese-Elikser and it is a tincture. I hope that helps.

I can't BELIEVE that! Honest? Gosh, I'm in a small town in California, and I have been able to get mine for...hmmmm....is it a year (or more) that it's been back on the market? Time goes so fast...gosh, have you had to wait this long to get it, or was there another pharmacy in your area?

Thanks guys...it's so GRAND to have a place I can go to...where people "understand" this...this...STUPID embarrasing "disease" we have! I'm in "an ok" period right now...feeling I want to leave the mountains (get out of "Dodge City") and go to the coast...need to see water, and the "endless view of it"..."have bottle of paregoric, will travel"!

Compazine is never going to help a stomach ache or flu diarrhea. It is meant to help stop nausea. If you do have a stomach flu (with vomiting) any of the anti-nausea meds will not help you. You are nauseous because your stomach is not digesting, nor sending it down to the intestinal tract. Hence, things that coagulate your food and bile (like Kaopectate) will help sometimes. Paregoric will help you the most for the flu. Since you have it, I would use it.

Glad to hear Betty, I pray you will get the relief you need from Paregoric. Just so you know, the bad taste from "Anise" which is a sweet licorice-flavored tiny oval greenish-brown seeds, from the parsley family and with a history that stretches back to 1500 B.C. Flavors drinks such as Pastis, Arrack, Anisette, and Ouzo. Anisette is a clear, very sweet liqueur made with anise seeds.

Stay well all, my wife has to go to a surgical center tomorrow morning for more of the same issues, please say a prayer for her (Pattie). Thanks

Thanks Ron and Kathryn! Just took a "swig" (boy...you have to agree, that "golden licquid" tastes HORRIBLE~~~NOT, NOT, NOT,, complaining...NEVER, EVER, for its benefits!) I had tried compazine, but to no avail...so...tomorrow will let you know how it works for me! Gosh, it's great to have friends to turn to...this is an incredibly difficult conversation to have with even family!

You will have to find a pharmacy that can compound it. My wife gets it from Harpersville Pharmacy in Harpersville, Alabama. If you want to call them (Phil or Scott) 205-642-9222. Scott and Phil are the pharmacists!

Betty; I always swore by paregoric as the ONLY thing that really helped the stomach flu. It helps that stomach-ache pain and wretched gurgle, as well as the diarrhea. Nothing OTC (over-the-counter) really did the trick. Though if it was not a bad, bad stomach, the old-fashioned "Kaopectate" was also quite helpful. You can still get the old formulation of that for pets. It is the exact same thing as what we got as kids. [As opposed to the 'new' Kaopectate which is just the Pepto Bismal recipe in vanilla.] But if your intestinal flu is this nasty thing going around that lasts for 3 wks, I would absolutely take paregoric for it.

Hi! Question...I think I have the flu...yes, I have diarrhea, but IT'S different from my IBS/sudden diarrhea problem...(duh...my tummy hurts)...ok, so...am looking for advice on taking paregoric for flu??? Should I jusst stay close to my "beloved bathroom" or do you think taking paregoric will help? (tummy ache AND sudden diarrhea?) Thanks so much and pray all are doing well?

Hi~ Happy (gulp...diarrhea free) NEW YEARS TO ALL! Gosh, it's been a long time since I've received notice that anyone has posted. ...has everyone been able to get ahold of paregoric? It's avaiilable (by RX) now...Mare? I'm nor sure if you responded (I don't see it anywhere) as to what city/state you're from? Gosh...I'm from a really small town (Oakhurst, Ca) and...now that it is FDA "legalized", there's no problem getting it...pls tell me you found a Dr that cares enough to GOGGLE paregoric to see that it's NOT that "dangerous" and it REALLY DOES WORK!!! Now...to me, "tincture of opium" is..."scarey"...(10 times stronger than Paregoric), so....I would think that would be prescribed for those of us with conditions such as "colon reduction" (don't know medical term...but...when all or portion of colon is removed...I've posted so often on my problem, but don't see it here...maybe it's the other site I belong to...I went "down" while at work in an E.R. Department...colon twisted...PAIN I'VE NEVER HAD, EVEN WITH CHILDBIRTH!!!...Drs I worked with ordered every test available (including CT, etc) everything came back "normal"...my family Dr (at the time) came in and said "well, we have a pretty tough flu going on in our town"...here I am, husband at my side, SCREAMING from pain, (they'd given me as much pain medication as they could)...finally, surgeon on call made a decision...blood pressure was dropping, Prest came in, (wah)....so, he opened me up, breast to pubic area, and there it was! A piece of skin wrapped around THE OUTSIDE OF MY COLON...!!! I spent about a week in hospital...Surgeon (FANTASTIC GUY) told me the name of it, and said I could have been born with it...he said blood vessels were ready to burst...they opened me up, just in time...I've always have problems with "sudden diarrhea", but after this surgery I REALLY have a problem with it...(I mean, if I have to go, it's N O W!!!) Anyway, paregoric really works for me...I do NOT abuse it, as it is my "friend", and I do not want to build up tolerance to it...when at home, bathroom is near (sometimes not close enough!), but if we go out, or are visiting friends, just a "small" swig (I really don't measure it, but enough to know it TASTES TERRIBLE)...and I KNOW, at least for...say 8 hours, I am ok...and to those of you who have this problem, YOU KNOW WHAT I MEAN!!! Anyway, it IS available with prescription...expensive...thank God I have insurance that covers it, but I SWEAR, if I didn't, I'd still pay THE RIDICULOUS AMOUNT (over 100.00/small bottle) it costs, because ...damn it...it really does work!!! I understand the supply/demand theory....not that many of us have this "acute" problem, but...O.K., enough already from me! Just need to know everyone is "taken care of" this New Year...and if not, key your problem...let's talk about it! Regards, Betty

My wife had the same surgery, no colon! She has a bag on the inside. The doctor she has is a wonderful person and makes sure she has all her needs covered. He is also a God fill person, which is also important to us. He volunteers for mission work gratis!!! He has tried her on everything, taking into account her full health issues. I do appreciate you sharing your thoughts. It is just hard when the almighty dollar makes the choice for some companies. Sometimes, if the company is big enough, they should make it available for humanities sake, not just the dollars. But then, that is the world we live in.

I posted on this site to see if there is anything her doctor may or may not have thought of, but I also find this to be a nice support site. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, and a healthy happy 2014!!!
