When Will It Stop?

Updated

I am 36 and for the past year been struggling with VERY HEAVY bleeding and HUGE blood clots. In September of 2015 I missed my period and it finally came in October 2015 (I was 6 weeks late). On January 5th 2016 I contacted my doctor because I have not stopped bleeding since October. I am talking heavy bleeding non stop and experiencing blood clots sometimes about the size of a softball. My doctor suggested lo loestrin to help reset everything back on track. I began taking this pill the same day and noticed a HUGE difference I even stopped bleeding for 4 straight days ( something that was VERY welcoming after months of torturous bleeding) my daughter got sick and I missed 1 pill last week. The next morning I woke up and all the bleeding and blood clots started again. It's now been a week and I haven't miss another pill and I sometimes have to change my pad around every hour. (can't use tampons because the clots come right thru them). I am drained mentally, physically and emotionally. I don't feel like a woman anymore. I cry all the time, I can't be intimate with my husband because of the bleeding ...will the bleeding ever stop? Why is the bleeding Soo bad again after missing just 1 pill?? Has anyone else experienced this?? Any and all advice is welcome! I have called my doctor and he doesn't seem concerned at all. He said give it a few months and call him back. Thanks so much for all responses ...I appreciate them in advance :)

Oh my, Jenn! I am so sorry! Huge hugs!!!

When you're taking oral contraceptives, it is actually a withdrawal from the hormones that causes you to have your period each month, it's not an actual period as nature intended, thus missing a pill can induce one and it may take a few weeks for things to balance back out and for the bleeding to stop, again. The pills you're on, when you have your period, actually have no hormones in them.

As to relations with your husband, you can still engaged in them, even if you're bleeding. It's perfectly safe to do so. If you're worried about the mess, you may want to look into the feminine hygiene product that's called the Softcup, it inserts inside, over your cervix, so you can have sex while bleeding, without the mess. I've been using it for several years now and love it. They are good for several hours, even with heavy bleeding and will last 12 hours for someone with an average flow.

As to explaining the heavy bleeding and clots, I can help with that, too… I've been there and I HATED IT!!! So… anyway.. that's caused by your hormonal balance being off, usually, a woman that experiences those symptoms has too much estrogen, in ratio to progesterone. Normally, you have estrogen all month, but only produce progesterone twice a month, once at the beginning from your brain and later, about the middle of your cycle, from producing an egg; IE: ovulation. As we age, we tend to stop ovulating every month, we may ovulate every other month, randomly, or not at all. The problem is, progesterone is what stabilizes your endometrial lining and prevents it breaking up and being expelled, which causes the bleeding… so, if you're not producing enough of it each month, due to not ovulating, you tend to bleed longer, heavier and experience clots.

Now, my future advice… if you have a smart phone, get yourself a reminder app that will let you know when it's time to take your prescription. They can be set to repeat the reminders and nag you, to make sure you don't miss any doses. I use one for my blood pressure and cardiac medications, since it could be very dangerous to miss them and my husband uses one for his epilepsy medication.

I really hope some of this information from someone that's been there helps. (I'm 44!)

If you have any other questions or concerns, please post back and ask! You are anonymous here and I'll be happy to help!

Are you on any other medications? They can also play a role in this.

Thank you sooooo much !!! That makes me feel comforted to know that I am not alone in this battle. And there may be a light at the end of this long dark tunnel ... I did call back to the dr today and begged for them to let me come in and fix my meds to help with this. Over the weekend the bleeding has gotten worse and they are concerned with anemia. They made an appt for Monday February 1st. As for other medicines...I have been taking phentermine since December 1st. The bleeding started before this so I don't think they are connected. My dr said during my September appt that my weight could be a factor as well ( I was 228lbs at that appointment ...currently 196 since starting diet and meds to help with weight). I also have taken ibuprofen for pain and Pepcid if I have heartburn but that's not an everyday occurrence. I am generally pretty healthy.

Last winter I was diagnosed with HPV and they found CIN II dysplasia. I was having similar issues with the bleeding and clots. They did a colposcopy and biopsy everything came back clear. My follow up PAP also came back clear in October. I always wonder if this strand of HPV that I have is making my uterus a hot mess lol!!!
He put me on lo loestrin last time as well and I was able to come off after 4 months and periods were like clock work and perfect until of course September lol. DUMB NATURE!!!

I am just praying this all is resolved soon ...I hate not being able to go out because of that gushing of blood that comes with standing up...makes life very hard.

I'm so sorry and familiar with this problem.
I finally started taking the birth control shot, bad news, I spotted for 3 months,
The upside, I haven't had a period since, or any PMS symptoms.
Just a suggestion, it was a God send to me.
