Bactrim is a sulfa drug.....if you are allergic the reaction is horrid

I had a really bad reaction to Bactrim, I've been off of it for a month and still feel like I'm having issues from it. Just wondering how long this can last, it has effected my memory and when i speak the wrong words come out .

Did it start on your shins? I took one dose and just on my shins i have two red spots one the size of a hand the other the size of a golf ball. They feel like a sunburn.

Mine was on my arms. It was red and swollen, felt like a sunburn. Two years later it's still red and that part of my arm feels cold all of the time now.

I have this too after one dose , i have horrible health anxiety too so im freaking out about it.

In my case I stopped it after 5 days. It's been a couple weeks since I stopped and I have been experiencing moderate symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, aches and pains dizziness and weakness below the waist . Its been scary and I too hope it is only a temporary thing. Has anyone else experienced something similar?

PLEASE BE AWARE OF BACTRIM.

I am currently experiencing GENERALIZED RASHES, head to toe. It seems to start from chest and arms then upwards to my neck and face and downwards to my lower extremities, which aren't as bad as my chest/back/arms. What happened to me was, I hada 2nd hematuria with leukocytes and afterwards urine culture was positive for Ecoli. Even before the urine culture result was shown, the doc decided to prescribed me Bactrim as it seems that I needed a strong medication. Completely understandable but I had no idea what would happen to me in the next days while on it. On the 7th day of taking Bactrim for a 10-day course, I started getting feverish 99-100. The morning after, it was 100.4. I called an experienced RN that is affiliated with my insurance for an advice. I am also an RN. I figured a second opinion is needed as my patient-side is saying to go to ER because i was feeling malaise as well but my RN-side is saying to stay at home and monitor since it is a low grade fever only. Low and behold, i got the same advice as i was thinking as an RN. Even the RN added, that it just could be that even though I am on my 7th day of taking Bactrim and basically feeling better until that 7th day,my body is still fighting the infection. After taking a dose of Bactrim,i went to sleep. Woke up with 102 fever. I decided to go to ER. I was tachy at >150, low WBC of 2.4, low bilirubin, low potassium 3.2. My rashes started appearing on my arms,told the MD in ER, but doesnt seem to be concerned. I honestly wasnt either, i figuredits probably my high fever. The rashes at that point were mild, pinpoint, fairly obvious on the inner side of arms. I was discharged with Fever and Viral Syndrome. The following day, i noticed my rashes were getting spread out, as i am noticing it now on my hands. I also did not take my second dose of Bactrim the day before since i spent so long in the ER. I figured maybe the rashes were a result from hospital gown. So I took a shower, ate, took my first dose of bactrim for the day, and slept. Viola! Woke up with generalized rashes. Never it occur to me its the bactrim. Good thing the parents of my boyfriend were in the house and said it could be bactrim and that i am having a delayed reaction. Went to urgent care,told the doc about it,she stopped the med, gave me a solumedrol shot and prescribed me prednisone. Also,another antibiotic. I also have swollen lymph nodes.

Now, im sitting here with rashes, which werent itchy initially but now starting to. Still contemplating on whether or not i should take such high dose of Prednisone (20 mg- 3 times daily x5 days) as i know ugly side effects of it.

I guess my point here is that NOT ALL HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS, including myself and i presume even the dr that prescribed it or even the ER dr since i did not receive any warning of the side effects, ARE KNOWLEDGEABLE OF HOW ONE CAN DEVELOP DELAYED ALLERGIC REACTIONS. If i may add, i still develop 99-101 fever, and after reading the comments here, im starting to think its from the bactrim.

I got severe headaches neck and muscle stiffness and blood shot glossy eyes I would Nvr take that again I only took two doses .. Side effects showed right away

Could take months, perhaps years. No real clear info from the medical community that I can find. I took it over a month ago and still suffering. Watery eyes, dizziness, mouth sores and a giant red patch on my back which is going away, albeit very slowly. I only went to an urgent care and was prescribed prednisone.

What your experiencing is considered aphasia. It can truly be hell for folks with no true cognitive deficit prior to administration of the pharmaceutical product in question. My Aunt suffered a similar reaction from this drug and although she's returned to 85-90% functionality it took almost 6 months to achieve this. I hope your making progress and feeling better. I was given Bactrim and now I'm suffering with the most severe skin rash I've ever seen , the itching is unbearable the look of my skin on my feet legs and arms is disgusting it's red and irritated and in patches I have been going through this for a month right now although my doctor it will go away eventually I still haven't seen any good results and it's been a month,, if anyone has any kind of remedy I'll try anything

Mine is all of a sudden my breathing is just terrible and I'm so weak in my legs I can barely stand up now after I've been on the generic for 7 days. It has scared me to death. I will not take another one. I will see if this stops. I hope you are better. Let me know.

I have been talking bactrim for about 5 days. I thought the chest pain and racing heart episodes were from my anxiety but my anxiety meds aren't helping. Anyone else have these issues?

I'm going through the same thing. I've had bronchitis and a staph infection in my nose with this stupid virus. After 3 trips to urgent care saying I had foliculitis we went to the er. Doc said I had a severe allergy to bactrim. I have the worst itchy hive rash on the planet omg. She put me on 2 Atarax pills 3 times a day and it works great.havent been on Bactrim in a few days and still have 60 percent of the rash and still have trouble breathing.

Has anyone had insomnia from taking this drug.? It seems like I go to bed sleep a few hours and wake up and am awake the rest of the night

It sounds like your allergic to it, I would go to the er, urgent care and family doctors aren't that great at diagnosing a med allergy. They had to put.me on an antihistamine/anxiety pill for the itching. And after a couple weeks being off the Bactrim I still had the rash allergy. But I was still taking tesslon pearls, I've taken numerous times in the past, but this one time I was allergic also. So please go to er.

Sandy, yes I had insomnia too among a host of other things my biggest concern being peripheral neuropathy.

Bactrim....well all I can say is to USE CAUTION! I was prescribed Bactrim for a UTI. I wish I had researched this drug before taking. After my first dose I was throwing up within hours. I attributed it to taking it without enough food in my stomach. Was fine for a few days....but on Day 5 I started getting a terrible runny nose and my eyes began to itch, shortly after my skin began to itch, my husband went to get me Benedryl and I called him 10 minutes after leaving to hurry home because I couldn't breathe right, my chest was tight and I had hives literally popping up everywhere. I was in the ICU due to reaction to this drug. I needed epinephrin and the rash was literally ALL OVER my body even in my ears. I was in the ICU for 3 days and I still have rash that is excruciating due to the itch. This drug is one that may help some people...but for the rest of us believe me when I say...WE ARE IN AGONY and not just for hours or a day or 2 , some weeks, some months, and some even longer. I am embarrassed to go out in public unless I am completely covered because people look at my arms and look at me as if I am a drug user or have leprosy! I just want this to go away. I have been off of the Bactrim for 5 days and symptoms have improved very little. PLEASE TAKE CAUTION IF PRESCRIBED I don't even want to leave for vacation in 2 days because of all the skin irritation. I never had an allergic reaction to any medication and now at 41 years of age, here I am with such a severe reaction that it scares me. BEWARE OF BACTRIM PLEASE! Nobody deserves to go through this agony.

Yep sure do! I have a terrible rash and I feel if maybe I could get some sleep it would help with my rash a little because my anxiety meds are not even helping me to sleep. I am just at my wits end.

I had similar issue. I took 1 dose of bactrim DS and within hours my tongue and throat were swelling. And i developed hypoglycemia. Its been 7 days since i took that one terrible pill and my blood sugar continues to drop quickly and i get severe panic attacks that i didnt have before. Im hoping these symptoms subside soon!
