Refilling My Valid Xanax Prescription Early (Page 26)

Updated

I only see one doctor and he gives me a 3 month supply of xanax. When I went the last time he wrote me out a prescription but I still had two refills. I had a friend and her husband passed away and I gave her some of mine thinking I would have no problem re-filling the prescription. I had sense enough not to go to the same pharmacy and not to give my insurance information. So I go to this small drug store by my house and I had to fill out paperwork such as dob, name and my DL #. Well they paged me to the front of the store and advised me that it was 7 days to early for them to re-fill. So my question is where can I go to re-fill a prescription that is valid written by the same doctor. I only tried one place, I'm guessing they must have a data base if you try and refill your prescription early (even without your insurance) does anyone have advice on where I can go to get this filled?

I did not say that it was the law that they had to hold the Rx, but they cannot fill the same controlled drug unless there is a dosage change. I have been in medicine 45 years. I am sorry if this confused anyone.

Xanax is not a narcotic. Xanax is a benzodiazepine and not even in the same schedule. Please do your research or at least have a basis for what you're saying.

George, you are very lucky you did not have a seizure. Benzodiazepines are all both physically and psychologically addicting. They must be tapered off over a few days, NEVER cold turkey! Ask any ER physician.

I have taken xanax for PTSD, since my family was murdered in 1995. I have a traumatic neuroma, a brain tumor, caused by a Dentist that severed my main cranial nerve inj. me with a nerve block for dental surgery. It is inoperable because he didn't tell me what he had done and it took 16 months to get a diagnosis and a ton of severe nerve damage. I also have 2 types of shingles; the regular kind and herpes zoster, that comes up in big welts on my face, scalp, in my ears, eyes, tear ducts, mouth and underneath my scalp which has turned into viral meningitis. ShingIes is the leading cause of blindness in the US and I have already lost my peripheral vision. I live in Tennessee and last year they passed a law saying if you take any kind of narcotics you cannot any type of Benzos. The pain center I used for the past 10 years insisted I go to a medication management Therapist for my bad anxiety and sleep disorder. That pain center closed and I was forced to start over with a new one and they asked me to stop taking both the Xanax and Ambien. When I get shingles in my inner ears it causes vertigo. I have already broken my foot and got a concussion from falling down the stairs from the vertigo. It can last up to 3 days and the uncontrollable vomiting throws me into withdrawals from my oxycodone.

The new pain management center reduced me from taking Oxycontin 20 mg two times and day and 10 mg oxycodone ready tabs four times a day, down to just the oxycodone 10 mg tablets. I went to an ENT surgeon for the vertigo and a Infectious disease Doctor for the shingles/herpes zoster and they both told me the same thing. I need to be on Valium to stop the vertigo. It has gotten so bad I have went to the Emergency room and they give me Ativan by IV. The only other thing that has stopped it is scapolamine patches and I cannot get a doctor to write either one because of the new state law. In Tennessee, xanax is now considered a controlled substance, just like the oxycodone. Doctors cannot call it in or write refills. I don't know what people who have chronic pain AND PTSD/anxiety are supposed to do? I only sleep maybe 2 hours a night and that causes stress. The shingles is caused by stress and once the shingles causes even more pain and I throw up my pain meds. It's like a vicious circle and I have no clue what to do about it! I have done physical therapy and learned the Epley maneuver, tried mitrazapine and it will work for the vertigo unless it is caused by shingles in my inner ear. It takes the shingles about a week to ten days to heal. It's a virus, so there's nothing you can do to control it, except to control your stress and anxiety; which I can't do anymore. Any suggestions? Because I am just about at the end of my rope.

George, you are correct. Once tapered down, getting off Xanex is much like if you tried to quit smoking. However, most patients that quit cold turkey from strong dose Xanex could have a seizure or worse. I'm just saying that the average person should taper off and be careful

Narcotic is a broad term used many times for any Controlled Substance...do your research! On the Federal Level it is a schedule IV, BUT in some states, including NY State, it is treated as a Schedule ll. How often do you prescribe meds? I didn't think so!

6mg a day ain't s***. All u people who are commenting on this telling people they need to cut down, you have no clue what its like to be addicted to them. I was first prescribed em when i was 11. I had no f***ing idea id still be on em. I get 4mg a day. It's not enough.

My Dr. gave me a prescription of 60 .5mg xanax with instructions to take 1 every 4 hours or as needed. That's 6 a day, so can I refill my script in 10 days? I have 5 refills.

I don't advocate buying meds without your doctor's knowledge but I would recommend going to one of those Canadian pharmacies or, take a trip to Mexico and have the druggist or whatever he is write you one and have it filled there in his pharmacy.

I'm needing my xanax refilled. I get 75 1mg pills (up to 3 a day). The last time I refilled was on 06/26/17, but I ran out due to strong lasting panic disorders. How early can I get my script refilled?

Jason, speaking for myself you are wrong. I know what it's like to be dependent on opiods. I think people are offering their advise to others to reduced their dosage because they know what's it is like to be hooked. Addicts helping addicts. Isn't that what NA is all about. Also, by now everyone knows that it has become an epidemic with people getting hooked on various drugs after being legitimately being prescribed them for legitimate illnesses and chronic disabilities. For me I never got dependent on Xanax. I take 1mg twice a day as needed for anxiety. So, I get 60 pills a month. I see my psychiatrist every three months and get a script with two refills to last me until my next 3 month visit. I never run out of the Xanax before my next refill. In fact, I usually have leftovers. Now Opiods I don't mess with because those were what almost caused my destruction. So, don't get offended because IMO most of the people here have either gone through it, or is going through it.

Hi BL, I don't know anything about it being a law. But I just checked with Walgreen's the other day for my own informational purposes. This was before I even read this thread.
Here is what the pharmacist said: If a patient holds on to a written script for control substance it automatically becomes invalid after 30 days.
If they submit the script to the pharmacy it is good for 6 months. That means even if they don't use it right away the pharmacy will store it in their system for six months. If they don't use it within six months the script becomes invalid and get closed out.
IMO, it is more prudent to submit any control substance script to the pharmacy rather than holding on to it. I did that once and the script expired on me, lesson learned.

In my State it depends on the Controlled medicine. A C 2 must be electronically submitted to the Pharmacy and within a certain time frame, a C 4 like Xanax can be written and given to a patient with a 6 month expiration date. you mention you never have abused Xanax and are not dependent. The problem with this medicine is when you discontinue it, taking it is no problem

Hi Eddy, thanks for your feedback. I can only speak for my State and the pharmacy I deal with. So, let me clarify, saying I went to the doctor 8/12/17 get a script for Xanax 1mg twice a day as needed for 30 dAys with two refills. The doctor don't put the 6 months stipulation. The pharmacy does, I guess it's a protocol they have to follow. General meds on file become invalid after a year if refills are not used. Control substances becomes invalid 6 months.
Regarding the Xanax I take it as needed since its PRN. So there are days when I don't take them and I am ok. I incorporate holistic also. I honestly have never had An issue with Xanax. Regardless, I can sympathize with those that do.

I believe that the 6refills on xanax is allowed so that's something with your Dr. Also it depends on what state you live in. My state sucks now because everything is done electronically, even my adderall which always had to be written out and brought in to the pharmacy each month. So, what I would do myself , call the medical board of the state you reside and ask if your provider is under investigation or why has that changed.

Good luck!

I have been taking Xanax for years, used to get a 6 month supply....then it went down to 3 months, then two months, now I have to go in every 6 weeks, they are only giving me 45.....the reason??
They are cracking down on meds, since so many people seem to be abusing this drug and opiates, and dying.....

Your insurance probably won't pay for two. I filled a blood pressure medicine and couldn't find it. Knew my insurance wouldnt cover it right away so I called the doctor's office and told them what happened. They called me an another one to Walmart and I went and paid for it myself. As it turned out it was $1 cheaper than my insurance paid.

I also live in California, and they changed the rules, to get a prescription refilled, you can't just call on the phone, you HAVE to go into the doctors office.....that's been in effect for about 3 years now......so I make sure my appointments are every 45 days, since that's all they will give out now......
