Mixing Pain Meds And Subutex, Suboxone, Buprenorphine

Updated

Former Heroin addict....I have been taking 32mg of Subutex daily for almost 2 years now for addiction treatment and also for chronic severe pain. My question is: Is there anyone else on here that has been on Subutex/Suboxone/Buprenorphine for a long period of time and tried taking other pain meds with it? What were your results? Do you still do it? Have you found a way that you can still take other pain meds sometimes without any adverse affects?

I do not take them, but I can tell you that it would not work with Suboxone, because it contains Naloxone, along with the Buprenorphine and that is a substance that specifically neutralizes other opiates, to prevent their abuse, while being treated with it.

Yes absolutely, been on both Subox and Tex for over 4yr. and once in a while I get that itch wait 72hrs and use for a while and then wait 24hr and hope right back on my subs or tex. Ur on a grip tho, max dose, Im was on 20mg's subs and now dwn to 16mg's and hope to drop to 8soon. but yes the more u take for a longer period of time, the more it builds up in ur body ok. So we both have high tolerances and therefore w/ its 36hr. half-life u need to wait at least 3days more if u can b4 even considering using any Im assuming Oxy, or H, but whatever it is, even w/ 3day wait, U will only get around 80% of ur drug. Waiting a week if poss. IMO is golden and ur gonna get ur full dose of whatever it is u wanna use! Ive tried using 60mg of oxy IV after 10hr. and a small rush, but was gone in 15min. a waste, now did feel it after 24hrs. at same dose but this time shot 30mg's at a time. after 2days I felt most all the effects and after 3 since Im on half ur dose I deff. got the full effect for sho! No doubt in my mind! on small doses when I first started, they put me on 4mg, and oxy cut through very easily and H destroyed me! I mean in a good way this time. I told my doc. I needed more the drugs would not be able to get through so he put me on 8mg, same deal, just slightly less euphoria. Once I got to the 16mg range of tex or subs the pain meds stoped working and I stayed on them only taking a break hear and there not to use but to lower tolerance, raise testosterone levels since Ops kill testosterone and even can aid in more estrogen in males so Id only use for 4-5days a week taking a few days off, then taking my full dose and getting pretty high of that alone. There are also meds u can get that will allow u to use less and get the same feeling or use the same and potentiate it! Vistaril/atarax is one I use 100mg per day and25-75mg of Promethazine w/o codeine of course! Benadryl helps, and most anti-histimines but vistaril is know shown to aid in pain. Even taking an aleve IMO works best but any NSAID help make the suboxone more potent! Also Injecting the Subutex in low doses is great and u don't need more than 8-12mg per day and ur F%&ked Up yo! If that's not ur thing and its prob. not or ur doc. is crazy to Rx a med w/o the naloxone u can inj. Forget I mentioned it but subutex is good at first for pain 4 a few days to a week max and then ur tolerance get sky high, and at ur max dose even higher! at this rate, ur getting very little to no pain relief form subutex. Im not a doc. but I am a CCMA with clinical specialties and know my stuff! Docs do this to act on a placebo effect on the mind so most if any pain relief ur feeling is placebo. That's fine but once u know the truth, the effect will stop unless ur really still getting chronic pain relief after 2yrs of tex.lol sorry, but can help but laugh since it happened to me as well before I realized what was going on as I was uped form 16-20mg by my doc. as he said take the extra 4mg's when ur having back pain and the placebo effect worked until I did research and found articals similar to mine now! Anyways more is not always better, and will this drug that is deff. true IMHO as I want to get dwn to 8mg's so I can go to the bathroom w/o having to use doculax and suppositories etc.. and so I can start the wheening process! anyways good luck to U and I do wish u the very best, hope something in this helps u out and comment or reply and I will try and get back 2 u asap if u got anymore questions ok? Sincerely CAB-

Buprenorphine is the opiate ingredient in both Subutex and Suboxone. Buprenorphine is an opiate that has such a high affinity to bind to the opiate receptors in your brain, that other opiates (even very strong opiates such as heroin, morphine and fentanyl) cannot "penetrate" or "break through" the Buprenorphine "barrier" that is created when taking either Subutex or Suboxone. The Buprenorphine simply binds so "tightly" that no other opiate can bind to the opiate receptors in your brain. Consequently, taking other opiates while taking Subutex or Suboxone will not provide pain relief. The only opiate that I am aware of that can penetrate the tightly binding Buprenorphine "barrier" is a form of fentanyl called sufentanil. Sufentanil has a higher binding affinity to the opiate receptors than Buprenorphine, and therefore it will provide pain relief to the user. Sufentanil is used in some surgeries and is not a drug you will find at your pharmacy. I doubt that a physician would be willing to or even legally allowed to prescribe Sufentanil. Even emergency rooms are unlikely to have it. First, you would have to find a physician who was knowledgeable about brain chemistry, Buprenorphine and the "super potent" opiates such as sufentanil. Then you would have to convince him to administer it to you (most likely in a hospital setting). If the physician is truly knowledgeable of these drugs, he will understand that Sufentanil (or other super potent opiate...and there are others) is the only way to successfully treat pain in a buprenorphine patient. The bottom line is this: if you are taking Buprenorphine (Either Subutex or Suboxone) AND you take another opiate (eg oxycodone, dilaudid, morphine, fentanyl), you will not feel the effects of the latter opiate-no pain relief. You have to find an opiate that has a higher binding affinity than Buprenorphine. All of this information is available on the internet. I have been a Subutex patient since 2007. I have tried treating pain with different opiates, and at very high doses, while taking Buprenorphine, and I have yet to obtain an opiate strong enough to penetrate the bond that Buprenorphine creates. It is likely that you would need to stop taking Buprenorphine and start taking methadone (to alleviate withdrawal). Once the Buprenorphine was out of your system, you could then avail yourself of the common opiates. I am not a physician, so please confirm this information with a physician before mixing Buprenorphine with other opiates.

Nope. I've been on subutex since 2005. Started out on 32 milligrams now I'm on 24 and happy. There are no pain opiate meds that will break through the subutex or suboxone. A word of caution your gambling with precipitated withdrawal anytime you mix the two. Sorry you're in pain still. I would suggest some holistic remedies. Good luck and God bless.

If your on Suboxone and you take an opiate you might as well flush it down the toilet it has a lower ceiling effect than the opiates do and if your on opiates and you take suboxone it will immediately put you into withdrawals in a matter of minutes.

Re: JJ (# 3) Expand Referenced Message

Nope. Cannot mix subs with pain meds. The pain meds won’t work when you are also taking subs.
