Hives From Omnicef (Page 5) (Top voted first)

I took Omnicef 300 mg 2x a day..I took them for 11 days..was suppose to take for 3 weeks..At the palms of my hands started itching..and were very red..than my left foot started itching..I stoped taking the medicine 1 day ago...this happened on the weekend...of course...I am taking bendryl...about every four hours..Now my left calf has hives..both wrists..have hives..my bikini area..is covered with hives..and of all things..my right ear..is flame red and itches...also my right knee...I called my doctor today...she said stop the medicine..I said I did...she said take bendryl 50 mg 3 times a day..which I am..and I think more..This is so weird..that it has hit such different parts of my body..ohhh. I forgot...how could I forget...tonight..my butt started to itch...and its just covered in hives...Has anyone else had this problem with Omnicef...I think I would rather have the bladder infection than go thru this

Cefdnir should never be prescribed to someone with an amoxicillin allergy. My 17 year old son took cefdnir for 10 days for a salivary gland infection. Then he started having severe diarrhea. In the next few days he started breaking out in hives. His hands were in pain from the hives. I took him to the doctor and they didn't make the connection to the cefdnir since it had been several days since he finished it. He was told to take benadryl and zyrtec. The next day his face was swollen, he started coughing and he had a fever. We ended up in the ER and they gave him steroids and epinephrine. Then he had a 5 day prescription of prednisone. Hopefully he will be better now.

I also started breaking out into hives 2 days after finishing 10 days. It lasted for 2 weeks. Started on my torso and thighs and gradually spread out my extremities. Didn't get on my face until the very end. Prednisone with multiple antihistamines did barely touched the itching. I was taking 2 allegra in the morning, 4 zyrtec at night, 4 zantac during the day and supplementing every couple of hours with antarax just to survive. Very awful situation. Included an ER visit because my blood pressure dropped to 70/54. Scary. Never again will I take the drug. One allergist I saw said it was probably not the drug but I don't believe him.

I have been taking Cefdinir for bladder infections, now all of a sudden my palms itch and so does my buttocks. The itching drives me crazy! I had been taking this drug for over 2 years for my bladder infections, no more!

I was prescribed a Z-pack and Cefdinir to treat a severe sinus infection two weeks ago. I finished the Z-pack, no problem, and continued to take the Cedfinir two times a day. On the last day of Cefdinir I started itching on my belly button, ankles, elbows, hands and fingers, and behind both ears, while at work. I went to my doctor and she told me to discontinue use and added it to the list of medications I'm allergic to (this is the first time I've had an allergic reaction to an antibiotic).

I've taken Cefdinir before and did not have this reaction. This time though. Oof. Bad diarrhea, a yeast infection (even after taking 2 doses of diflucan and drinking kefir), and then uncontrollable itching all over my body. My hands are red and swollen on both sides, my fingers itch, my palms ache, and my joints hurt—I feel like I have arthritis all the sudden. I am not one to complain about pain, but my hands (especially) are throbbing and it hurts to make my hands flat.

My doctor did not want to give me Prednisone, as I have a sensitive stomach and the Cefdinir had already done a number on it. So she prescribed a steroid cream, Triamcinolone Acetonide cream, increased my dosage of Allegra to two 180 mg tabs a day, and said to take 150 mg of Zantac once or twice a day. Zantac is an antacid but it's also an antihistamine. She said that this "cocktail" should have the same effects of Benadryl but without the drowsiness.

I'm still itching...and miserable.

My son was on omnicef for strep throat and ear infection. He had no issues with the medicine until day 7, he was supposed to take it 2xs a day for 10 days. On the night of day 7 during bath I noticed red bumps, we thought it was chicken pox. I gave him his dose of it that night plus benadryl for itchiness. the next morning I went to wake him and his lips were ballooned up. I was so scared it had restricted his airways. Immediately I gave him tylenol and went to the ER. He acted ok seemed to breath fine. When he saw himself in the mirrro he started to cry ( he is 6). At the ER they said it was most probably a reaction to the anitbiotic and gave him a steroid shot. then a rx of prednisolone for 3 days. His swelling has went down some 7 hrs after the shot. I am still giving him benadryl as well. Good Luck to everyone. Antibiotics can be so helpful but at the same time can reak havoc on our bodies.

For God's green earth, report it to your records and never take it again... 09 I had blood in my left lung full, leaking over into my right, they went inthrough my nose, and repaired a tear, and said i had scar tissue, dead husband smoked 3 packs a day... anyway what they used on me to either work down there, or put me to sleep i broke out in hives so bad i'd walk the floor with a kitchen prong and cry... ask the doctor, no answer... never did get a answer, but i broke out in skin lesions all over my body, the worse was where i'd laid on the table... it took me a year to over come,still i can stratch up patches easy on my thighs easy by rubbing... at least they could be made to research and find out what causes this extra hell we encounter....

I really feel for all of you because I know what you are going through. I am allergic to almost all antibiotics. I can take sulfa drugs and zithromax. For anyone who doesn't know, if you break out in hives from a medication, call your doctor RIGHT AWAY. Next time you take the meds, it can be fatal. I carry an EPI Pen 24/7. I break out in hives from bee stings, certain foods, even some incense gives me hives, so my doctor says rain or shine carry the shot with me.I hope you all get better soon!!

My son still has the rash. Still comes and goes and transferrs areas. The pharmacist told me to mix some "floranex" into his food. It made the rash tolerable. I gave him this once a day for three days until his stools became normal looking. Using aveeno bath soap as his dr said he has eczema now. (I don't think she wants to admit it was from the meds) anyway. Lotions aquaphor or the like on the rash has helped, too. I did give him some oatmeal baths, too. His rash has downsized and looks more like heat rash. Small raised bumps only on the back of his arms and thighs. I just really want to know how long everyones rashes lasted. If it lasts any longer I am going to go the the dermatologist and switching pediatricians.

I'm in my 5th day of this miserable rash, same as you have all described above. It started on my 8th day of Cefridin and it took me a few days to make the connection (I thought I was allergic to mangoes). Right now, I have the rash on my stomach, chest, neck, ears, hairline, bottom and bikini line. Raised red blotches with welts that blend together. 1st I went to urgent care (steroid shot, benedryl prescription) and it got worse. The next day I went to the ER (2nd steroid shot, epinephrin and prescription to Hydroxizone). The rash went down quite a bit, but today it is coming back before the Hydroxizone wears off. Does anyone know how long this lasts?

This just happened to me too. Had a Sinus Infection and took Cefidnir for 10 days. After 10 days, I broke out in very bad hives on my palms, kuckles and arms. Later it spread to my waist, then feet, especially the soles. It was so painful I could not walk barefoot. Not fun at all. This was the 3rd time I've taken it. I had no reaction the first time. I had a minor case of hives the second time that I thought was related to food poisoning, but know I know better. The third time allowed me to make the link. My Doctor stated you can build up an allergy to it. I'll never take it again. Unfortunately, you need to suffer through it until it leaves your system.
