How To Take Suboxone At Home
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I have ten suboxones. I have been taking oxycontin for pain but want to try at home to w/d. I can't discuss this with my doctor as it will affect my insurance. This is a fact..in my case... Can someone on here tell me how to take my subs? I would appreciate any answers and no lectures. How many do I need to withdraw..Thanks so much.

How long after a suboxone sublingual (orange pill - 54 375) is dissolved can you drink and eat? Are there any other things I should know about administration and how to get the full effect? Is there anything that interferes with it?

CALIGIRL1983: Yes, the Subutex/Suboxone tablets go under your tongue, just like the strips.

I am prescribed suboxone 8mg strips, but I received an 8mg pill. Do I let that dissolve under my tongue as well?

STORM: Why on EARTH would you think that one dose of Bupe would keep a legit opioid addict from being in withdrawal for THREE DAYS? That is completely ludicrous. And it isn't the Naloxone that will throw someone into withdrawal, it is the Bupe itself. The Naloxone is only in there to keep people from taking the Suboxone intravenously. And why do you think replacing one opioid with another opioid, and then STOPPING, would keep someone from going into withdrawal? That makes no sense whatsoever. I mean, if you are addicted to heroin, and replace the heroin with oxys, then STOP the oxys, you are going to go into withdrawals. Coming off of Subs produces withdrawals, just like coming off of any other opioid. Your information is a bit....OFF.

Suboxone has a three day grace period, a delayed effect if you will. Take half of your first film sublingually & pop the other half back into the packet. Be sure to use dry hands (don't get the film wet, wait 5 hours and if you still feel awful suck the other half but don't swallow it for five to ten minutes. Swirl it around in your mouth so you get the full effect for as long as you can bare, chase down with a hot coffee (gets rid of the bitterness instantly & activates the drug faster) do not eat grapefruit in any form. The secret to breaking addiction is to disrupt it without causing too much pain to yourself. After you have your first suboxone film it will hold you from opiate/codeine phos' withdrawal for 3 days! If you find your feeling awful or crampy etc during those three days have another half of the next film, rinse & repeat & before you know it you'll be off opioids & well and truly feeling much better & you'll probably have some films left over to help someone else! It shouldn't take more than five or six days for the withdrawal to pass. Don't get addicted to suboxone & especially do not inj. Opium based products or the suboxone itself because the naloxone will make you very very sorry you did.

Subutex and Suboxone are the same thing. They are both Buprenorphine. Yes one has Naloxone and one doesn't, but it is the Bupe itself that is the active ingredient, the "blocker" to simplify it. The Naloxone is only in there to keep people from injecting the Bupe. The bioavailability of Naloxone when taken sublingually is less than 10%, maybe even less than 5%. So it doesn't matter which one you use in the "first days of withdrawal", the results are the same.

For Sandra and any others that are standing up and doing an amazing thing by taking a big step with accepting the problem but also cannot get ANY help for attempting to do one of the hardest things ever and are having the exact issues my husband had (no doctors available, doing it in your own) as well as maintaining which is difficult as well. Not every person reacts the same to the naloxene (this ingredient is not in Subutex, used in the beginning days of withdrawal, which only contains the buprenorphine). This is not the ONLY thing that is "believed to be the truth" concerning Suboxone. In saying no person reacts the same, this also pertains to dosage, need of amount and how often, availability.

BIG AL: I don't know what kind of habit you had, as far as the amount, but 2mgs of Bupe wouldn't even TOUCH me. I think telling someone that they "won't have any withdrawals" because that is YOUR experience with taking only 2mgs at a time is very short sighted. When I was on Bupe, I had to get to at LEAST 8 to 10 mgs to get any relief whatsoever, and was taking over 20 mgs a day.

I have done this process 100 times. Been on dope and oxies for 14 years. Wait until the morning time, so that u have had 8-12 hours w no drugs. Then, take 2 mgs of the subs. If its a pill, cut it into 2mg chunks, if its an 8mg strip, cut it in quarters. Put the strip or chunk under ur tongue amd let it dissolve. Do not spit. Swalow all of the medicine. U will have some cravings, but no withdrawls. This will last 24-36 hours, trust me. The next morning, do the same thing. Maybe even try less. U want to get off and done with the suboxone as quick as possible, or u will get hooked on it. After 4-5 days, dont take anything. See how u feel. Remember, a craving isnt a wd, although it can feel like it. Dont drink booze! I know you think it will take the edge off, it wony. It will make ur cravings go thru the roof.

Mine happened when I took opiates and didn't wait long enough to start the subs back up. It was really good, really long acting opiates and I just rushed it. MISTAKE. I was in the bed, then the couch, then the bed, then the couch...I was LITERALLY climbing the walls. Begging my husband to smother me with a pillow. (And not in a joking way) I had no clue why this was happening at the time. I was having the things "crawling" on me as well, and leg spasms so bad I thought my bones would break. My husband started shoving trazodone down my throat until finally I passed out after about 7 of them. Holy friggin hell. That's the first and ONLY time I ever want to go through that stuff. I slept for a couple hours from the trazodone, and when I woke up my clothes were completely drenched, I had a bloody nose and I felt like I had gone 3 rounds with Mike Tyson. AND...I had pissed myself. Just a complete horror flick.

Yes, it is worse than hell. I was taking over 25 plus Roxy's a day when a detox facility who was not familiar with treating such high dose patients gave me subs before I was in full withdrawal which in my case was around 18 hours at the time. Though I felt like hell at that moment due to the onset of regular withdrawals, when I was given the subs I immediately began horrific hallucinations, vomiting, uncontrollable diariaha, feelings if ants crawling all over my body, hearing noises that weren't real, physical pain so severe I bacame uncontrollable to refrain me in my bed by staff. It was physically, emotionally, and mentally everything thing one would imagine hell to be like. Granted I was on unusually high dose of opiates when this occurred, but it is not worth the risk of taking to early for anyone in my opinion. It has the potential to make regular withdrawals seem like a trip to Disney Land if subs are given too early.

I don't want to give a lecture as u said but there is ABSOLUTELY no one liner answer that is accurate in all or even most cases. As far as background I has a 10 to 50 30mg Roxy contin addiction both oral, IM and IV. During which time I tried 4 rapid detix centers, 3 12 step facilities, 2 narcanon, 4 out patient facilities and 3 suboxone out patient attempts.
Bottom line is you absolutely do not want to take it without being in full withdrawal and there are specific clinical guidelines to determine when that is. It varies depending on your drug of choice and it ts half life of which methadone is generally the longest. Also the dosage and duration you were on it is relevant. I have witnessed people given the wrong dose at the wrong time, but more importantly and TRUST me on this had it given to me to early once when my addiction was severe and it was overwhelmingly more severe withdrawal symptoms that when given at the correct time with the right dose. Do not take this lightly. The adverse affects can be dangerous and and intensely painful if done incorrectly. PLEASE leave it to a professional. With over a dozen attempts at treatment in a half dozen different types treatment and over a million $$$ waisted on the drug n treatment. Trust me do it right the first time rather that foolishly as I did.

Dib: I doubt that only 2 suboxone pills is going to do much for you. It will help with maybe a day or two's worth of withdrawal symptoms, but once that wears off, you are going to be sick. Sorry, but 2 is just not enough to do a real detox. Any possibility of getting more? Or can you go to a suboxone doctor and start a real withdrawal plan?

Hi, I have been taking opiates now for four yrs. I like everyone else is ready to stop. I have 2 subs, the orange pills, I know you have to start when you are in full withdrawals, I'm wondering if I should take the whole pill at first, or do I break it in half and take half? Thank you anyone who can help me with this.

No, i am telling what i have experienced. you are just plain WRONG. you tell someone its ok to take subutex too soon and you are going to send them into precipitated withdrawals, which is the worst thing ive ever experienced. yes, EXPERIENCED. ive been a opiate addict for 30 years, ive been on subutex, suboxone, methadone liquid, methadone tablets....i know what im talking about. and if you like, you can look it up. its called PRECIPITATED WITHDRAWALS. they are from taking a partial agonist/antagonist too soon after full agonist opiates. you can look that up too. naabt.org/faq_answers.cfm?ID=5

now you DO say to wait 18 hours before taking the subs. which is accurate if you are talking about opiates like oxys or vicodin. but if a person has been without their primary opiate of choice for 18 hours, they likely WOULD BE in withdrawal anyway, so you are correct.... in a way. actually you arent making a lot of sense. and with methadone, a person needs to wait more like 48 hours because methadone takes a lot longer to leave your body than other opiates. this i also know from EXPERIENCE.

please stop telling people they dont need to be in withdrawal before they take bupe. your inaccurate advice is going to send someone into some seriously bad withdrawals. i was pre-med at berkeley, and studied addiction medicine extensively (yes, a junkie studying junkies), my addiction doctor is the leading addiction specialist in colorado, was the addiction specialist for the denver nuggets NBA team, and speaks in front of the colorado state legislature on matters of addiction and treatment. so this isnt just coming from my experience AND my studies, this is coming from him. you should trust me on this.

and again...please, PLEASE...anyone planning on taking buprenorphine after full agonist opiates...DO NOT listen to this person who says you dont have to be in withdrawals before starting subutex/suboxone! you will regret it!

You don't need to be in full withdraw before taking a sub. I have been on them for three years. I know. That's terrible advice. Your telling what u have read not what you have experienced. You only need to wait about 18 hours after your last opiate use to use a suboxone.

Listen to your body. If the subs have worked then you will know. If your not withdrawing anymore then they have done their job.

A 14 day regimen is not necessary. I have been on subs for three years. During this time I have had to have surgery in which I have had to return to using percs. Thus withdraw again. Just a few subs were needed.
