Fibro/cfs Please Help. Only 22

Updated

I was just diagnosed with fibro. I have EBV, chronic mono, chronic fatigue syndrome, depression, anxiety, you name it. I've been to so many different spec. And they all gave me different diagnosis. My back and legs feel like they are on fire. I just turned 22 and can't even walk up two flights of stairs. I get migraines and head aches all the time. I fell asleep at my work desk one day due to the fatigue. I was put on b12 shots and cymbalta. not helping. It's also my neck and shoulders. Nothing even seems to put a dent in it. I'm taking to many NSAIDS. I can't sleep at night. I have adhd and insomnia as well. What are some meds I can talk about with my dr? Can you give me any advice? I am very desperate. I'm tired of this taking over my life at such a young age. Someone please help.

Some drs prescribe ADHD meds for fibro and CFS, but some won't. Since you've already been diagnoised with ADHD, you may want to see a psychiatrist for the ADHD meds. That might be easier than finding a dr to treat the fibro and CFS with ADHD meds due to your age. You do have to watch when you take ADHD meds as well as how much or they can interfer with sleep. On the other hand, there are some with ADHD that find that they sleep better when they take their ADHD meds as prescribed because they don't lay awake thinking about all of the things that they have to do and they are also tired from having an active day. These are things that you can discuss with your dr.

There are a number of other drugs that you can try for the pain. Most drs won't prescribe opiates for fibro because some studies have shown that it doesn't help. If you aren't seeing a Rheumatologist for the fibro, you might want to consider that.

katie, you may need to change medications for your ADHD as well as your other health issues. Have you had any recent lab work done to rule out being anemic ? You may also need to change to another drug if cymbalta is working. Sometimes when you are trying different diets, you can miss out on important vitamins, minerals, etc. Have you noticed if you fall asleep more often at work or for longer periods of time right after you start your periods ? Do you fall asleep any place other than at work ?

KDT3315, fibro causes pain all over and it also interferes with your ability to get into deep sleep. Because it interferes with your ability to get into deep sleep, you wake up more exhausted than you were when you went to bed. Elavil (Amitriptyline) is one drug that is often prescribed to help fibro patients with their sleep. You take it once a day, close to bedtime. Not getting enough deep sleep can also make your pain worse. There are other medications they can also prescribe for fibro like Lyrica. You need to remember that not every med works for everyone. You have to take these meds for a while so they can build up in your system before you will know if they will be of help or not. If your dr doesn't seem to know much about fibro, you need to change drs. You also may need to see Rheumatologist. You do need to be very careful about the amount of NSAIDS that you take and how frequently because they can cause severe G.I. problems.

Try taking a hot bath before bedtime and see if it helps with your neck and shoulder pain. Neck and shoulder pain and headaches can be caused by tension and muscle spasms. You're under a great deal of stress so that could be the cause of that pain. The type of work that you do could also be causing and/or adding to the neck and shoulder pain and the headaches. You also might want to try laying on a heating pad with your shoulder and neck on the heating pad.

Thank you! Do you know anything diet wise?

katie , I'm sorry I don't. Except for common sense things like not to much sugar, caffine, fatty or spicy foods, etc. Also it is a great help to excercise. You can start out walking half a block and gradully add 1/2 a block each week. It really does help you feel better and it helps with the pain. BUT, in the beginning it can be a little rough, just go slow. Also no drinking or smoking.

@KDT3315,

RE: "My dr said I need to stop eating sugar and carbs and eat gluten free but idk what all gluten free things are"

Anything that doesn't contain "wheat" is considered gluten free. Most packaged or prepared foods will often state on the label if it's gluten free, but if you don't see it mentioned then it's safe to assume it probably isn't. A gluten free diet basically means sticking to things like fruits, vegetables, rice, quinoa, soups, lean protein, etc... I don't have a gluten intolerance myself, but I do tend to stay away from wheat whenever other options are available. Wheat in general is actually the underlying cause of many health problems. So much so that there are plenty of books that have been written about the immense benefits of a wheat-free diet.

RE: "Im trying to find homeopathic things or diets to help me."

I've read good things about D-Ribose being able to effectively treat symptoms of chronic fatigue and fibromyalgia at: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17109576

I also find different varieties of tea to be helpful in boosting physical stamina, particularly due to their slow release of caffeine in comparison with coffee's ups and downs.

Other than that, I think the previous suggestions that were made (i.e. exercising within your realm of capabilities) would be a step in the right direction.

Please keep us posted on your progress if you discover anything else that works!

I know I've been trying so hard. He increased my cymbalta to 90 Mgs. And I feel even worst now. I'm depressed because I can't even get out of the house on weekends. I can't think clearly. any type of vitamins any one suggest? I think I may go back and see my homeopathic dr. he found yeast throughout my whole entire body and treated it with some strong vitamins. Works just like antibiotics. I also have a leaky gut. All my recent labs came back normal. But I almost fell asleep at my desk on Friday mid afternoon.

KDT3315, your falling asleep could be a side effect of the cymbalta. Depending on the types of labs that your dr ordered, if you're low on certain vitamins it would have shown up.

Like BL said, fatigue is a side effect of Cymbalta. A lot of people find it that side effect goes after a while but for some it just doesn't.
I have Systemic Lupus, Fibro, ADD and assorted stress induced mental illnesses and two things immediately came to mind reading this.

Endep to help you sleep and Modavigil to wake you up.

I know throwing medication at the problem isn't always the best idea but I recommend these two because they both have good reputations, neither are addictive and then won't interact negatively with each other. Endep can cause mild agitation when you come off it but it's usually short lived.

Endep was initially advertised as an antidepressant but it's proven to be a better chronic pain and fatigue treatment. If you want to use it to fall asleep you should take it at least 2 hours before bed but if you simply want it to keep you asleep, you can take it right as you get into bed. I do 2 months per dose up to 25 (5-10-25) and then I come off it for a few months to reduce my tolerance to it. It amazing for good quality, restorative sleep which is why lots of Lupies and Myalgies swear by it.

Modavigil is a wakefulness drug that doesn't contain amphetamines. It's prescribed to people suffering from narcolepsy and shift work sleep disorder and helps prevent excessive daytime sleepiness. It's also good for behavioral problems because it increases mental performance.

I used to take dextroamphetamine for my ADD and I just couldn't think on it. The amphetamines made everything far worse. My body is super weak and so I always feel tired no matter what I take but modavigil wakes the brain up and keep you focused. It's easier to work your tired body when your mind knows exactly what you want to do.
