Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 2)

Updated

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

Have you tried going to an ENT specialist? Someone really good. I went through so much after a sinus surgery. No one knew what was causing it, even the Doctor who did the surgery. He checked again and I had a major infection in the sinuses. I was spectacle about this finding. He had me do sinus irrigations daily with an antibiotic and take oral antibiotic as well. Finally after months of grueling salt taste it left. I went to a specialist at UCLA in Los Angeles and I live in Las Vegas. Other Doctors did not have a clue. I have read where the salty taste originates in the sinuses. Hope this helps.

This condition is a sorry way to loose weight. One day the world is bright and happy, the next day you awake expecting another beautiful morning, brew your favorite tea, settle into your comfy chair with your devotional and sip your wonderfully brewed tea and-----------wham, what just happened? Did I do something different, did I mistake salt for sugar? I sip again and can't believe what I am tasting. It's pure salt just like drinking water softener. That was just the beginning. From that point forward everything I put in my mouth was horrible. I tried every possible combination of every type of food to no avail. Everything tasted awful, dry, powdery, salty, cardboardy, no description could accurately define this experience. Naturally I go to my doctor and am now waiting results from blood work. I am a heart patient with one stent, on blood pressure meds and Armour for thyroid. In addition to those I have acid reflux and Protonix is a daily dose to control that. Sinusitis is my constant companion and post nasal drip is another unwelcomed condition. From what I have read and information I have gathered, no one has an answer. There are many suggested causes yet not one is confirmed. So as we travel this road my hope is that since our bodies have been wonderfully and fearfully made in the image of God, designed with all the components necessary to heal itself if we don't abuse it, that we examine where we have ignorantly taken a wrong road in our caring for these wonderfully crafted bodies and seek God for our answer. It is His nature to give us wisdom if we ask Him and Right now that is what we need. So in closing I pray that God will open my eyes and ears to a solution be it by the doctors or heavenly revelation. I am believing my answer is soon coming forth. God bless you all who seek relief. God is my strength, I pray He is yours also. In Jesus precious name.

Make certain it is a good ENT Doctor. I have found that even the best do not have a clue. That is why I go to UCLA in Los Angeles and I live in Las Vegas.

I am 68 and had this salty taste for five years. It comes and goes (mostly comes) It started when I scratched an itch on my arm , there was a sensation of touching a potato chip to the tongue. Now it's like a tea spoon of sea salt. No doctor I talked to ever heard of this so therefore it must not be. (gave up} Any info would be a blessing.

Hi Y'All,
Sara Jane here. It's been four weeks since my first post and my blood work came back perfect (Dr.'s words) No indication of anything abnormal or in jeopardy. I then went to a naturopathic physician and she suggested the possibility of a bacterial infection in the sinuses. She recommended Marshmallow Root herb and I began taking it in tincture form last week. Some of my taste has returned but a salty residue remains in water and I'm still not able to eat bread, pasta, potatoes, carrots or anything sweet without the cardboard taste. I am very grateful for what I am able to eat at this time. If this is a possibility for those of you still struggling with this condition, try consulting with a naturopathic physician in your area or online. My doctor has a website if you are interested I will post it. God is GOOD thank you for my healing process!!!!

Hello again. Sara Jane here. Well so far all the MRI results have been negative. No sinus abnormalities, all soft brain tissue clear of obstructions. The Dr has ordered more blood work and a CAT scan. He explained that the MRI only reveals issues in soft tissue but a CAT scan will reveal any abnormalities in bones. He wants to rule out the possibility of any crack or break in a bone in my neck that could be leaking spinal fluid into the nose or mouth. A reach I must admit but I am willing to try anything at this point to find an answer. I still believe that God heals us and declare He is able. My prayer is for a complete healing however He chooses to do so. To all of you still struggling with this condition, be encouraged our faith is in the One who created us and He will not abandon His own.

Yes a cat scan will diagnose any infection in the bone itself, which is possible. At least you might find out what is causing the salty taste. Most Doctors are not that thorough. Did you try snorting with salt water? It is very effective in clearing any debris which has formed. Good luck.

If you have had a prolonged salty taste, it could be Sogrens. The body attacks the endocrine system. It is diagnosed by a quick painless biopsy of a saliva gland.
I had it done by ENT. Some people have found relief from medications for this condition. Rheumotologist know the most about this condition.

Sara Jane, did you get the results of your CAT scan? Was your doctor able to find out the cause of the salty taste in your mouth?

Sara Jane here. I have completed all the testing for the salty taste in my mouth. The CAT scan proved to show that there were no spinal fluid leaks or cracks or openings that would have leaked into my mouth via ears or sinuses. As far as the blood work for Sjorgens disease, the tests were negative. As a matter of fact, my overall health is excellent. Both the ENT specialist and my DO told me that there are some things in the medical profession that are a mystery and considering all the testing that was done and the results that were all negative this case is one they are classifying as one of those mysteries. For all of you that are still suffering from this condition it may prove helpful to look into the possibility of the Spinal Fluid Leaking as this was the only possible conclusion that both my doctors considered a cause. If found to be so there is a procedure that corrects the leak (a method that takes belly fat and plugs the opening) it can be seen online when you look up spinal fluid leak. This could be an answer for some still dealing with this condition. The good news for me is that on December 9th, the first time since this all began in September, I made my morning cup of tea and it was not salty, it tasted like tea should taste, to my amazement everyday since, the saltiness has diminished and normal taste has returned. I can only give the glory to God for this miracle, for as far as the doctors were concerned, it was a mystery but God healed me and there is no other explanation. At this special time of year as we celebrate the birth of our Lord and Savior my thankfulness is two fold. First for His coming to earth and offering himself for our salvation, reconnecting us to God the Father and for the healing of this condition that has baffled the medical profession. I have the gift beyond gifts this year. Thank you Jesus is my heralding cry. Blessings to all of you still looking for answers. Don't give up, and call upon God for your help.
Merry Christmas.

Hypnosis worked well for me. Four sessions and now bi-monthly "maintenance" sessions. Constant and uncomfortable salty taste is gone.
