Extreme Salty Taste In Mouth For 20 Days! (Page 7)

I'm a 51 yr. old female who woke up on April 7, 2011, with an extremely salty taste in my mouth. When I tried to drink water to wash it out, it was like drinking salt gargle water. Nothing I eat or drink makes it go away. I can't stand to put anything in my mouth that is salty because the salt taste already in my mouth makes it almost unswallowable. Prior to that day, I have only 2 regular medications that I take daily: Lisinopril 40 mg( increased from 20 mg in mid November) for high BPas well as HCTZ 25 mg(been taking Lisinopril for 8 years) and 1mg of ropinorole(generic for Requip) for RLS (taking for almost 6 years). I also take black cohosh twice a day for hot flashes and night sweats(last menstrual cycle was Sept. 2010). On March 18, I started taking a 10 day prescription for NOHIST for a sinus inflammation, as well as FLONASE and a cough medicine. I had taken both the Flonase and cough medicine years previously, but had never had the NOHIST before. I finished the NOHIST and had no other symptoms. I had also been following a nutrition plan since mid- February losing 2-3 lbs. per week, eating lots of protein, and walking 2 miles 3-4 times a week on a treadmill at the gym. I was feeling good and my energy levels were good. I had been drinking 5-6 glasses of water daily and then after the salty taste, I could hardly drink one glass. I ended up with a UTI because of the lack of fluids that I wasn't able to drink, and then had to take Cipro for 3 days and drink (salty) cranberry juice. Yuck! I also had lab work done and it showed a positive on the A & A and also a positive on the IGG. With those results, I was referred to a rheumatologist (which could take months to get in to see) and my primary care doctor changed by BP med to Triamatrene 75 mg and HTCZ 50 mg. Its been 5 days on the new BP med with no change yet. My willpower to make myself drink and eat is slowly eroding. I know that if I don't keep drinking that I could end up seriously dehydrated and in the hospital, with who knows what other problems. My doctor doesn't want to see me for 6 weeks and I still don't know when I will get an appt. with the rheumatologist!!! I have searched everything I can think of on the internet, without any hope of what it could be. I am a teacher and mother of three daughters who need me to stay out of the hospital! I hope that you can come up with a possible cause or direction that will find answers and soon! So I challenge you to find an answer, and in the meantime, drink a glass of water with about 5 TBS. of salt in it and drink it, at least 3 times a day and also swish it around in your mouth continuously and then swallow it!!!! The only time you won't taste it is when you go to sleep. And its the first thing that you consciously are aware of the instant that you wake up! Then think about having to do this for at least the next 20 days and then maybe you will have an idea of how I am feeling!!!!! Desperate!!!!!!!!!

Cindy, I too have been experiencing this afflictions since Mothers Day, with NO ANSWERS!!! My nurse practitioner is baffled, ENT says swollen tongue, with burning tongue, no taste, extreme saltiness, he said it might come back might not, prescribed ant acid, I have lost 30lbs (the only silver lining) my dentist seems to be the most receptive so far, steroid paste for my tongue, just started, hoping for results. I DO know what you are feeling & experiencing, nobody else gets it or how it takes the joy out of living, but just so you know... you are not alone. There is always HOPE & POSITIVE THINKING. I have been having the salty taste in mouth for a couple weeks now. Also having a strange smell. I have mentioned it to my GP, but no help was offered, and she didn't even act like I said anything. I took Lisiniprol many months ago, but haven't in ages. I do have some autoimmune disease, but it is undiagnosed right now. Have symptoms of lupus, Sjogrens, MS, and fibromyalgia. I'm taking supplements, but need to add zinc, according to earlier post. Magnesium, Vitamin D3, Calcium, and Vitamin K. Hopefully, it's not from any of these.

I have been taking homeopathic medicine for the past 18 months for a sore throat and allergies. During the end of April this year I had a fall and fractured my left ankle. I was in a cast for 6 weeks and obviously immobile for another two weeks. Indigestion developed due to the immobility and then I started experiencing a salty taste in my mouth. Though the problem is not severe, I feel sometimes irritated and trying my best in avoiding medication, particularly conventional drugs which I hate. Regularly, I chew a few holy basil leaves, cinnamon, a piece of clove, all natural. I am confident to contain the issue very soon with those natural remedies. I to have been struggling with this for almost a month. In December all lab work and bp perfect. At the end of Dec I got this salty feeling and bp hit the roof. I was on a low does of amlodopine, so they doubled it, did not help so quad it. BP down for a few days but if I eat anything that is not a veg, the salt taste is unbelievable. BP so high had to go to er. So after repeat labs all good, just so thirsty and salty, the more salty the higher the bp. What could have happened and this is ruining me. I am an athlete who runs, bikes, swims and so out of character. 50 year old female

I am a 73 year old male who is type 2 diabetic and have just finished my third lot of antibiotics for a very nasty chest infection. I have been suffereing for 7 weeks with this cindition and have had chest xrays which came back clear. The last antibiotic I was taking was Dioxycline for 14 days and previous to that two lots of Clomoxclave for 7 days. I take the usaull statins, Piogliczide and Allupurinol for a Hiatus Hernia. Since the second batch of antibiotics I have had a very strong salty taste in my mouth along with an over production of phelm. Everything I taste is very salty and because of this I am not eating or drinking as I should. Even very sweet items taste salty and I cant get the taste and phelm from the back of my throat. Neither the Pharmacist, Practic Nurse or my Doctor can explain this problem and I am losing weight and becoming dehydrated due to this condition.

I had the flu with sinus congestion. I used OTC meds and a saline nasal spray. The distilled baby water that I used in the humidifier was a year expired. Whatever, the sinus congestion became a sinus infection. And I knew this when I woke up to a SALTY TONGUE which caused nausea on an empty stomach.

I found that our well water was salty - Aquafina sodium-free. But even Aquafina wasn't really tolerable. I downed a cup of Aquafina and countered the salt taste by chasing with no-salt walnuts/pecans.

I ate lettuce sprinkled with olive oil; and days later was able to add a can of tuna in olive oil. Frozen peas have no salt (sprinkle with salt-free walnuts and olive oil).

So I was finding foods to eat based on what can be manufactured without salt but which I would normally buy/eat in a salted state: i.e., baking nuts vs Planters nuts.

TUMS Smoothie was good for traveling.

I was given Nystatin anti-fungal for oral thrush (result of the Post Nasal Drip of the sinus infection) - that didn't help. The next doctor did Mary's Magic Mouthwash for Candida on my tongue (contains Nystatin) - that didn't help. Oh, its better; lots better, actually; but it's not back to normal yet. And I really think its better due to the sinus infection being better. And I hadn't taken multi-vitamins in the past year - that's the first thing I corrected when the flu hit.

Weird things: Baked potato was awful; sweet potato with coconut oil was good. My go-to fast-food is a Whopper hamburger with lettuce and mayo; but I can't eat a bagel with cream cheese.

I know that this is an old thread, but I thought I'd post my experiences anyway in the hope that it may help someone who may land here (as I did, looking for a cure). About 2 months ago I started to experience a salty/acid taste in my mouth. It first started slowly and then became unbearable. No amount of teeth brushing, gargling with mouth wash and scrubbing my tongue would help. Long story short, after 2 months of this agony, it dawned on me that I had made a recent change in the brand of face wash that I was using. The new face wash contained salicylic acid and was deposited on my lips and entered my mouth as I licked my lips throughout the day and washed my face in the morning and at bedtime. As soon as I stopped using the new face wash, the salty/acid taste was gone within 2 to 3 days! Oh, the joy!!! I understand that everyone's situation may be different, but it might in some cases be something as simple as a new brand of lipstick, lip balm, or in my case, face wash, that is the root cause of this issue.
