Dilaudid Withdrawal Pregnancy
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I am 19 weeks pregnant. I have been taking 2mg Dilaudid every four hours daily, which would be a total of 12mg in a 24hr period. I have been taking it since 13 weeks pregnant, so a little over 6 weeks. I have been taking it every single day for chronic kidney pain. My doctor decided to transfer my care to a pain management clinic, and my appointment is not until Tuesday, it is currently Saturday. My OB refuses to write me a script to get to through until my appointment, and even though I have been taking them only as directed, they want be to come in and be converted to Methadone. NOT HAPPENING. I will suffer through all the pain in the world before having a child born to Methadone. My OB has refused to wean me down on the medication, so I am currently off it cold turkey. My last dose was yesterday morning, and this afternoon I did receive a 3mg Morphine injection for a UTI after having to go the Emergency Room. I am wondering because I am pregnant, and they are not offering me a safe process to come off the medication, if anyone knows how bad it will be? I currently am vomiting, extreme irritability, helplessness, shakes, hot and cold sweats, headache, and body aches. I did have a seizure this afternoon followed by a muscle spasm fit in which every single muscle on my body tensed uncontrollably. Can anyone please tell me how long this is going to last? How bad it could be? I have been on it daily for 6 weeks. And prior to that I had it several times via IV while in the hospital. Thank you for any answers that you would be able to offer me. I am incredibly embarrassed and wish my doctor never would have started the medication in the first place, and now being so unwilling to help other than to give me methadone.

What ended up happening? Was your baby ok? Did doc end up finding out?

METHADONE ALL THE WAY! No birth defects, and you can be at a low enough dose that your baby doesnt even withdrawal! Im at 32mg and my midwife says my baby probably wont even be dependent on it for any amount of time

I can not believe you would rather have your baby being subjected to dilaudid than to methadone!! Methadone, depending on the dose, may not even have your baby withdrawaling when born. Dilaudid on the other hand will have your baby completely dependant on it, and ALSO can cause deformities while methadone is completely safe in terms of birth defects

I hope your pregnancy was successful and your withdrawels didnt last too long. I was taking 32mg of dilaudid every 24 hours, 8mg every six hours for second breast cancer metastases and the subsequent chemo and radiation treatments and it took a full month to detox even though I went to rehab for 2 weeks at first. After the 2 weeks at the detox hospital I cold turkeyed at home and it still took another 2 weeks to even START feeling better. I lost 25 pounds during that month and 1 1/2months later now I still have insomnia. God bless everyone suffering from narcodic withdrawal's. I've decided to never take it again unless I am terminally ill with no hope of survival. It was/is THAT hard !

I've been addicted to hydromorphone for 2 years now. The more disturbing sad part about it is I'm pregnant and been taking it during my whole pregnancy. My Dr. doesn't know about it and I'm scared. I'm trying to taper down but it's not working. I know it's not safe for me or my unborn. I need help and I can't mentally or physically get clean and sober. My mind can't handle not having it. Or I can't sleep at night and feel restless during the day without it. I need advice.

I would be on my way to hospital if you're withdrawing so is baby making it at extreme risk of miscarriage I have been through this and hospitalisation and daily checks of baby are essential also get a paediatricians on board mine stopped reducing the opiates it is safer for them to withdraw them at full term then to risk them coming early and not making it

You should be able to go to the emergency room ab your kidneys, when you're in the back you tell them the problem and that you don't want the baby hurt from you withdrawing, they should pit you on an iv. Lots of fluids and sleep ask for no pain meds unless weak or small amount till come off of them . they should do so. I an alcoholic and am having problems with my pancreas, they immediately admitted me but all meds are to my discretion. They understand my struggle and the satey of my baby. You just have to talk to them and take advantage of the help and tools they give you. And I absolutely agree ab not going to that clinic and being put on methadone, that's some bad stuff.

To Jessica- that Brea sounds like an angry woman. I'd love to say don't pay her any mind, but she is impossible to ignore... Kind of like nails going down a chalkboard. There are two sides to every story. I began reading these posts in an effort to better educate myself on this very subject. When I read yours I thought, "So glad Jessica can get right to the point and I appreciate her candor." However, reading Brea's posting only made me feel ashamed and embarrassed to ask even further. Comments like hers are simply counterproductive. I'm so glad you and your family are doing well. All the best...

I have been researching opioid use during pregnancy and for weeks I have found everything I looked at basically said nothing to make an expecting mother worry to much. Until the past 3 days where I have read about congenital heart defects and things like cleft palette. Just would like to advise women to research thoroughly. Reading these studies would have influenced my decisions greatly in early pregnancy. Each person is different so it's best to be fully informed of all options and possibilities.

Obstetricians use morphine because it is the safest drug for pain to use while your pregnant , it is probably one of the very few narcotics that they know about and the effects it has during pregnancy and to the baby. It has been around for 100 years. Being on morphine while your pregnant is not ideal, but its far better then the mother being in severe pain during her pregnancy ( severe pain can lead to premature babies). Iam a nicu nurse and was a delivery nurse prior and I have seen many women come in and deliver their babies and had been on high doses of morphine during most of their pregnancy to all of it, I have only seen one baby have dependence to it, and that was when the mother was taking it for recreational use. Yes obgyn use methadone as a option but that is for moms who are drug addicts. When a mother uses methadone during pregnancy , yes the baby will be healthy but he\she will come out dependant to it. For anyone to comment and say someone who is on a medication that was prescribed from a doctor is being selfish , and not thinking of their baby should first go to medical school.

I am astonished by the outlash of a genuine concern of an expecting mother. I am a few weeks pregnant and am addicted to hydromorphone. I am terrified of what this will do to my baby. After traumatic injury and back surgery I was diagnosed with a variety of conditions that cause incredible pain. How do I get off quickly without causing dangerous withdrawal symptoms? I have already cut back significantly, but want to get off completely before my baby develops too much. I do not wish to be attacked. I just want some help to keep me and baby safe and healthy.

I will be a first time Dad. My wife is 7 weeks pregnant. She has kidney issues to. She was born with bilateral UPJ obstruction so she always gets chronic kidney infections and UTI's. She lives on partial 1 kidney, and bladder holds 1000cc of urine with kidney holding 300cc. A normal person hOlds around 400cc of urine. She is allergic to everything under the sun as far as medicine. Today I came across this post, because I was scared daladid would harm the baby inside. I was glad to see your post on having a healthy baby after all the kidney and pregnancy pains. I'm sorry others have judged someone who undergoes such a hard health lifestyle that may match my wife's. I do not normally post things like this, but I took offense to those who judged you and wanted to put this out there that just because you have kidney issues and have to take pain meds, does not make you a seeker.

I couldn't of said better myself hunn :) I also can't believe she thinks she could possibly know rather or not she has more pain than you, and being pregnant I know makes chronic pain much worse. My Fibromyalgia and neck back and spine disease were not detected untill after my youngest was 3 and he's almost four next mo th. During my pregnancies in which all three are three amazing boys I experienced alot of chronic pain sleep insomnia no appetite muscle spasms etc. And I did nothing for my pain in fear I'd hurt my unborn child with pain medications even if they did detect these issues and treated them but I am now 8 weeks pregnant and prescribed norco 7.5s and I take them as needed and I have been told that when my health is down hill so is the babies and when I hurt the baby hurts ten times worse so therefore there is ALWAYS more benifit to taking your pain medications rather than suffer constant chronic pain. Congrats on your amazing children they are a blessing from God and dobt ever let people such as her judge you because only God can judge you and he must think your doing awesome :) I know this is super old post bui couldn't help it lol

You should be ashamed of yourself! Who do you think you are?! And how can you possibly know if you hurt more than she does?? Considering she's pregnant and has chronic pain im sure the pain is ten times worse. You should preach to yourself and maybe pick up a good ole bible!!

Don't listen to the suboxone methadone pushers. I was on dilaudid almost 5 years. After my wife accidentally od'ed on 100 mg morphine, I spiraled along with her cousin. We both had been on dilaudid for years. I wanted to check out bad. We went thru bank accts, life insurance, sold tons of things in 3 yrs. $400,000 wasn't gone yet we got low on Monday. Heather got her damn ssi another 200k. She died Feb 3rd. I wish I went with her but keep waking alone sad. I'm trying methadone now cause my head is a mess. I need help. I would give any and all I have left to be back in your shoes. Sounds like my symptoms when I started. It's not that bad. Go to a relative and tell them how u will try to get money or anything to get dope. In about 5-7 days of drinking water, eating good food, all will be over as far as withdrawal. Methadone lasts months. U can do it. Please take my advice. You know u best. You can predict how you will attempt getting more. Tell on yourself when u tell whoever what's up. Do your best or you will prolly die like my wife, her cousin, n prolly me next. lol seriously ur so lucky kid. U don't have to die. Man up. I'll baby sit u if u got no one. I'm experienced in all form of being a mess and promise ur not dralin with s*** compared to others. {edited for privacy}. I know its doable for you.

Ok all she was nasty, rude and down right mean, judge mental ...BUT read her post where she apologized! She was big enough to admit she was wrong and said so..... She told Jessica she misjudged her and that she thought Jessica was a good mother. If she apologized then that's all she should have to do. When you realize you're wrong and admit it, that takes a lot of guts.... Let's all pray for both of them! That's what our Lord would want us to do... We are supposed to forgive...just as he forgives us. God bless you all....

I feel SO SO SORRY for u for havin to pass judgement on someone who you do not know and belittle them for coming out to ask for advise on how to handle her situation. Obviously she was looking for help. Withdrawals from any opiated pAin meds is very dangerous to an unborn baby that's why doctors don't just stop. It can cause the mother to miscarry. So before u pass any judgement on anyone else take a very long good look in the mirror as to who you are!!!! Cuz u r not anice person at all!

Reading these posts has reminded me that there are some really mean people still in this world. People who obviously just like to stir the pot any way they can. Those who feel better by putting others down.
Breeia- you are the ipitome of the cruelest kind of cruel. This poor woman was scared and probably felt very alone and I believe all she was looking for was someone to listen and possibly offer a kind word- not someone to cut her down as you did.
So for you, Breeia, I will pray. Pray that our heavenly father helps you to "pull the plank from your eye" so you may see what is in yourself before judging others- I am sure you have not lived your life in perfection- none of is have!
Jessica- I'm happy to hear of your healthy baby who I am sure is happy as well- always believe in yourself as a mom, not matter what others may say.
God bless all who stood up to this bully, because that is all you are Breeia- you are the type of "mean girl" I am raising my children not to be.

I give you kudos for your apology...I'm sure it took a LOT for you to do that. But there should never have been a need for the apology. This woman posted here for advice on something that had her confused and worried. I'm sure her intent was not to be berated by someone who doesn't know her. I applaud her for her restraint with you and your responses. It has been my experience that when people are so nasty and hurtful with their words in their judgment of others, it is their way of making themselves feel better. That's very sad......

such disdain for first responders... I pity you! "hero boy"! he sounds like he is too kind to blast you so I will. As a veteran of 2 wars, first off, we don't see ourselves as "heroes", we have a job to do and we do it PERIOD! But when I see civilians cut down my brothers/sisters in arms when they have no clue what it takes to do the job it is worse than an insult, it is a level of understanding that you have no respect for the people that give you your freedom, yea, I said it... you certainly didn't do anything to earn it, you inherited it, have a little respect for those that serve in your interest, less than 5% do so. and turn off your damn caps lock key. I don't think it shows any illness, it just shows ignorance, pure and simple. as my grandmother aways said, if you have nothing nice to say, don't say anything. (now, you may flame away as it won't bother me, I have been done by much better, even at the business end of a rifle and lived through it... have a nice day
