Can You Chew Ibuprofen? (Top voted first)
UpdatedI chewed ibuprofen and it made my mouth burn and now my stomach isnt feeling very good. Was it bad for me to chew it instead of swallow it?
My daughter chewed an advil and her tongue has been burning for the last 2 hours. How long does this sensation last? Is there anything she can do to relieve it?
Never chew ibuprofen or any other pill that is not meant to be chewed! As you read this, you may think that this suggestion is easy to dismiss, but why else would these pills be encapsulated? I learned the hard way. I chewed ibuprofen for years to remedy headaches and menstrual cramps, and now my stomach is incredibly sensitive to almost anything. My gastro-intestinal tract took an even harder beating than my stomach, and I am constantly having stomach and bowel issues. I may have permanently damaged these systems. ***If you cannot swallow pills, take something like Alka-Seltzer. It contains aspirin (make sure you have no allergies to this!), which is an effective painkiller. You just put the Alka-Seltzer into a glass of water, and it dissolves into a drinkable mix which almost tastes like Sprite. I hope someone out there learns from my mistake. Never chew any pills that are meant to be swallowed.
I chew it and i didn't hurt me, is it different for other people or something? my headaches go away faster...
Just because chewing ibuprofen doesn't make your stomach hurt, doesn't mean it isn't destroying your stomach/throat/esophagus lining. Doing this once or twice may not make a huge difference, but doing it repeatedly over time can have major consequences. I know this from experience.
i can't swallow pills, so, i chewed up an ibuprofen and i think it may have gotten caught in my throat (it felt like it got caught in my left tonsil, if thats possible). since i have done this my left side of my throat is hurting. could chewing up the pill have something to do with my throat hurting?
But it didnt hurt me at all, the headaches just went away, if it didnt hurt me it should be fine right?
Ibuprofen is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory and these are well known to cause irritation and/or damage to the delicate lining of the mouth, stomach and esophagus. That's why they are distributed as coated tablets and the instructions usually direct you to swallow them whole and not to crush or chew them. So, yes, it was a bad idea.
Even with the coating on them, NSAIDs can cause or irritate conditions, such as heartburn, GERD, ulcers and gastritis.

Are there any other questions?
I accidententally chewed a Nurofen liquid capsule this morning. Was chewing some food as i have trouble swallowing medicines with water. Suddenly got a hot and very bitter taste and pulled out the plastic. Taste has stayed with me for hours. Won't do that again
First off, Ibuprofen is NOT 'buffered aspirin' it is ibuprofen, which although categorized together as NSAID's is different chemically and in efficacy. Quoted from link below - "Ibuprofen is not aspirin nor does it contain aspirin. The chemical name for aspirin is acetylsalicylic acid. Ibuprofen...is isobutylphenyl propionic acid" Chemical compound: Aspirin - C9H8O4 Ibuprofen - C13H18O2 - Taken from: diffen.com/difference/Aspirin_vs_Ibuprofen
It is always advisable to take each with food (a simple saltine cracker or two can do the trick) as they both can damage the gastrointestinal lining of esophagus and stomach. If you have an issue with swallowing in whole pill form, which as others have pointed out is NOT recommended, you would be far better off purchasing the liquid form of the medicines instead (generally sold as "Children's" aspirin / ibuprofen). The link above may be a solid starting point in understanding more on the matter and it offers several links at the bottom of the page to its source locations and further reading.
I personally don't get irritation and the pain goes away super fast...
How long did the pain last?
My daughter has chewed loradatine hayfever tablet. I this dangerous? Should I get medical advice?
A gel pill is filled with a liquid that induces a burning sensation, the powdery tablet just tastes bad.
If you can't chew them, why advertise them as "soft". What is the benefit of soft tablet?
Re: Nicole (# 7)
I accidentally took on bitter into an ibuprofen gel capsule and i burned a little. I drank water and juice and my stomach hurts a little. How can i heal this.
Is BC powder and Cyclobenzaprine 10mg bad after taking each others.
And, just to confirm this is bad for you, I now get heart flutters. I've had several episodes of a pounding heart that skips a beat. Which I never had prior to chewing iburofen. Very scary. And if it occurs at night it keeps me awake.
I got my wisdom teeth removed and for the past 3 day's I've been crushing my ibuprofen pills and mixing them in water because they're to big to swallow... What do you guy's recommend?
I accidentally chewed ibuprofen for my first time, will this affect me?
If you need to ask if you need medical advice, you need medical advice.
