Can Suboxone Kill People

Updated

I suffer from chronic pain and have been getting pain killers when ever I can. Usually 2, 3 pills a week. I tried some suboxone to see if it would work on my pain. I took about 6mgs. Is that safe as long as I don't drink alcohol or mix drugs. I feel like I just did some heroine.

Suboxone contains Buprenoprhine, which is a narcotic and Naloxone, which neutralizes other narcotics, to prevent someone's abusing them while they are taking it.

As to its potential to kill someone, any medication has the potential to do that, if someone abuses it and takes too much.

6mgs isn't a super high dose, many drug addicts that have been severely abusing other narcotics require about 24mgs, per dose, to prevent the withdrawal symptoms.

And a safe dosage really depends on a person's tolerance to other medications. If you are getting that high feeling, then it probably means you overdid it, a little.

However, as to taking to much, there are symptoms you should watch for, in case you need to seek medical attention. They are mainly related to the central nervous system depression that it can cause and might include: extreme drowsiness, sedation, lowered heart rate and slow, shallow breathing or difficulty breathing.

Since the Buprenorphine is a very potent narcotic, these possibly symptoms are the main reasons it is a controlled substance and shouldn't be used without a doctor's supervision and approval.

As I said, the Naloxone in it will neutralize most other narcotics, anyway, unless you took extremely high amounts of them, which would be dangerous and since both they and alcohol can cause the CNS depression that I mentioned, you are very wise to stay away from them.

How are you feeling now?

My husband took Suboxone (as required by the hospital staff) when he tried to detox off of Vicodin. It was the worst mistake of his life and for the next two years the doctor kept increasing his dose. When he finally got off of it he could feel nothing. He went through hell trying different types of meds and even spent quite a while at UCLA undergoing ECT treatments. His brain was no longer able to feel pleasure. Over the next two years he wasted away. He also had COPD, but it was the severe depression that killed him. I would like to see Suboxone taken off the market. It was hell for him to detox from and nobody should use it for more than a few months. Doctors should not increase dosage, but decrease it. It makes no sense to take something to detox and continue to increase the dosage. The doctor here was much to blame also. He was one of few in the area that could prescribe it so what is the incentive for him to take people off of it? We were married for 40 years and Suboxone killed him.

So sorry to read about your husbands death, it's very sad. I've been taking Suboxone for 5 years ... every day ... and probably will continue to take it until I die - I'm 60 yrs. old. It helped me when I needed it 5 yrs. ago - and I barely think about it today.

If you are the kind of person who can take a maintenance dose without increasing (which I blame the doctor for) then you probably could continue to take it. I wish you the best. My husband was 61 when he passed. I sure miss him.

Hi Kathy, The first few days on suboxone you may feel a little high but after that you will not get high on suboxone. It will make you feel normal. Subs have whats called a ceiling effect, all that means is once the subs attach to all the pain receptors in the brain you can take all you want and it won,t do anything. The ceiling effect is around 32mgs. If your husband went to a sub dr. and has a script he could run out before next appointment and he will be out of luck.

Im loosing my mind plz help.. My husband has been on Sub for 2 yrs now.. He had a vicodion addiction took about 20 a day.. Well he takes 3 to 4 sub a day.. The Dr is not even attempting to get him off 100 pills a month.. Well aside from that my husband has gained weight even at one point had to take water pills because he was so filled with fluid.. He had about 8lbs of fluid in each leg.. He got carpal tunnel so bad he cant sleep was falling asleep sitting up hunched over dropping cigarettes burning the floor table blankets.. I will tell you this he looked F...d... Up.. His brother died 3 yrs ago from drugs.. He took everything would fall asleep eating face in his food.. Fall asleep hunched over.. So my husband is reminding me of his brother yet only thing he takes is Sub.. Wtf ive read up on it causing thyroid problems and carpal tunnel nothing in the actual Suboxone forums.. All people who took it and had same problems.. Well my husband has no thyroid and he takes meds for that but he refuses to beleive Sub is screwing him up and his quack Dr fills his head with BS.. He printed out the ingredients in subs and each individual side effects.. One claimed to cause carpal tunnel and thyroid problems.. So he actually had the nerve to tell my husband to tell me that it's nothing from sub itself but the one ingredient in it.. Like that was supposed to be a good thing.. I told my husband to just shut up he was trying to prove me wrong.. I said you proved my point now if you still beleive the sub isnt screwing you up then your just in denial and you care more about your Suboxone then your family.. All I asked him to do was cut down he cant and wont even do that.. Correct me if im wrong Suboxone is supposed to help with addiction not become one.. Ive tried it 3 times and each time taking a tiny peice for back pain.. After the third try I said never again each time I vomitted all day dizzy and seriously felt like a hang over that wouldn't go away.. Ive already promised myself if I loose my husband to this sick pill im sueing his doctor and I will be the first person to spread the real truth and awareness of it..

Suboxone saved my life, I'm sorry it wasn't right for your husband it's not for everyone, but to say take it off the market because it didn't work on him is not right his dr should of switched him to an alternative med because if it's right for you, you will know I've been on it 5 months and I do believe it works better on heroin addiction not just pain pills as it is stronger than morphine so I don't understand why Dr's are prescribing it to vicodin users its stronger than vicodin so it makes ppl on vicodin sick and a heroin addict can handle it because of it's strenght, God bless you!!!

I was hooked on hydrocodon for years as you know it is a secudule 2 and suboxone is a 3 so actually it is weaker than suboxone but I do agree it can be dangerous and addicting but so far it has been a blessing for me

I'm so sorry to hear that. I was addicted to opiates for 10yrs after getting prescribed pain killers by my doctor for a injury suffered in a high school wrestling match. I was 18yrs old taking 3 prescribed vicidon a day. Needless to say by 20yrs old i was a full blown opiate addict. 4yrs ago i started taking subs to keep a needle out of my arm. As of today I'm 3 weeks clean from everything for the first time in over a decade but i agree with u completely. The issue is doctor's writing scripts making addicts, not the street corner dealers, not drug cartels...its doctor's....

Your full of s***, the doctors are not making addicts. The government is by not letting doctors give meds to the people who need them.

You should always start at a low dose like 2mg . After you get use to the drug you will get no euphoria at all.

The increase in dosage is to find the optimum dose that stabilises a patient. I had my dose increased twice to alleviate withdrawal cravings from fentanyl. Once stable, they should slowly taper down using a combination of comfort meds and regular sessions with a councillor/psychologist. Nobody can successfully taper down without also changing the way they do things or indeed feel.

Suboxone saved my life. I can honestly say that I was very close to the end. Regular seizures increasing in frequency and duration. One seizure scared me so much that I had enough. It was time to fight back. That was 2 years ago. I still get the odd craving when I see certain people or in certain social situations but this is where the psychology comes in. Learning how to manage those are essential. I avoid all opiates now no matter what. I even had a shoulder operation 6 months ago and without pain relief.

I'm truly sorry for your loss and I understand why you feel this way but it has saved a lot of lives. Without it, I wouldn't be here writing this. It does sound like your husband was not supported properly while taking it....That should be your focus. Not just on the drug itself but the ineffective medical support alongside it. Without proper medical and social intervention, issuing suboxone alone will definitely lead to a relapse.

I wish you well. Even if you don't agree with me, I at least hope you understand my situation.

Regards
John

Re: Worried wife (# 11) Expand Referenced Message

My spouse does the exact same thing! Every blanket has wholes from burns. He always drops his cig and when I complain he just says he's tired. He takes 1 a day and I take 1 a day, but I don't nod off and slump over like he does. He abuses his I think & that's why. He's addicted to the needle just as much as the pill. I'm so sick of it and he won't cut down either.

I agree with you 100%. I need pain meds because of nerve damage and 4 herniated discs in my back and i'm in tears every single day asking God to please help me. I can't do this anymore. It's the government that's f***ed us all.

I have been taking suboxone for 3 years. I use to praise and tell everybody it was the best thing that ever happened to me, but the last 3 months have been the worst in my life. I was dizzy like I was going to pass out. I have been trying to taper down ever since..my symptoms are: fever, lightheadedness, chest pain, heart fluttering, brain pressure and jaw pain. It just keeps getting worse. Any advice or any help would be greatly appreciated, and prayer. God bless you all..
