I have been instructed to stop my 20mg a day after being on it for 6 months (2 PE's one in each lung at Xmas) and I have to say I am really worried and every little pain I think its come back. I have another 3 weeks to go until I got for a blood test to see if I am prone to clots however I am completely paranoid. Anyone else had the same feelings....as the meds have been my comfort blanket for so long..... ## Have you had a hypercoagulability test? Mine revealed a Factor B Leiden gene mutation, so I will never stop taking blood thinners. If you can have that blood test, it will let you know if you have a tendency to clot. ## Do you mean Factor V Leiden? Been on 20 mg Xarelto since march 2014. Had double pneumonia in jan 2014 accompanied by DVT which threw clots to my lungs. In hospt...

Started Xarelto a year ago after blood clots after breast cancer surgery. Having surgery again in a week and was taken off xarelto until after surgery. I am now scared to be off this drug. Do I need to be scared of new clots even before surgery? ## Hi there, I've been on Xarelto for three years after having a stroke while in AFIB. Whenever I have a surgery (colonoscopy and total knee replacement) my doctor either puts me on an injectable two days prior or just stop taking it a day before the procedure. By all means speak to your doctor and express your concerns. ## How many days before dental surgery should I stop taking Xarelto 20 mg and how soon should I start again?

I have been on xarelto for 2 & a half years for afib.....was recently taken off of it....I am having flu like symptoms.....headache, achiness & nausea... Could any of this be due to stopping the xarelto? ## Hello, Lynn! How are you? Yes, it's possible. Your body gets used to anything that you ingest regularly for a long period of time, so suddenly stopping something can cause some minor withdrawal effects. As listed by the FDA, you may also experience diarrhea, chills and fever. However, there is a also a chance that you've just caught the flu. How are you feeling, now? How long have you been off of it? ## How long does the nausea last when coming off Xarelto and what other side effects do you get? How long before you start to feel any better?

A fall produced a cut and abrasion. Bled for 5 days so stopped xarelto 15 mg/day. Had taken for 4 months for DVT. Am now on 5th day without xarelto. Blood is still oozing slightly but clotting well. Do I wait until the bleeding has stopped before restarting xarelto? Doctor is unavailable. ## I would get to some Doctor first and sooner the better. I thought I seen other bleeding problem posts but now can't find them. I worry about the possibility of internal bleeding, so far so good but seeing your post and others I think if a small cut won't stop bleeding in days then an internal bleed would be deadly ## While it is late now, if you're still on Xarelto or any blood thinner I'd recommend keeping some WoundSeal on hand. It's available on the internet and in many pharma...

I was prescribed xarelto 20 mg for 20 days following foot surgery, due to a history of a clot in my calf, took last pill day before yesterday and my whole body, but especially my foot is swollen and retaining fluid I am fatigued and sore. I also have a superficial infection on the end of my Inscision and taking antibiotic might go to ER if it doesn't improve. Looks like lots of fluid retention. ## Hello, Christy! How are you doing? Has there been any improvement, yet? From what others have reported, this is a common effect from stopping Xarelto. Some people also experience fatigue, diarrhea and headache, as listed by the FDA. In most cases, the edema goes away on its own, but some people do need to take diuretics for awhile. ## I stop xarelto yesterday, today i noticed i didn't g...

I'm a 21 year old, female athlete. I had surgery on my left knee (3rd one) after tearing my meniscus in December. Recovered quickly and started PT within a week after surgery. A couple months after, my calf started to swell to an abnormal size and I had pain in the back on my knee through my calf. I also started to get chest pains and dizziness. Saw a few doctors - some thought I had a Baker's cyst and didn't think the swelling was bad. Even got an EKG to rule out any heart problems, everything came back normal. It wasn't until my trainer sent me to get an ultrasound in February that they found a DVT in my femoral vein. Sent me for a CAT scan and found that it broke off and "showered" around both lungs. Immediately started me on xarelto, which gave the worst side...

Within 3 days of taking 20mg of xarelto I could not move. Back pain, spasms and muscle stiffness was horrible. Informed cardiologist who disregarded my complaints. Have been off xarelto 8 months and still suffering from back pain and stiffness. It is unknown if this is permanent. I hope to God that is not the case. Xarelto has ruined my life. ## It would be very odd for medication side effects to last that long after stopping the medication, though the FDA does list them as possibly including headaches, joint pain, and muscle pain. Are you on any other medications? Is it possible that there may be some other cause for these issues? ## Hello, My husband is experiencing the same thing. He has since switched blood thinners. The pain is still so bad. Doctors say it’s potassium and mag...

I have been on 20 mgs of xarelto for newly diagnosed afib once a day for one month. I didn't think about my refill and have run out of my medicine. I've called in for my refill but I won't get it for 2-3 more days. I've seen some things on the internet about stroke and have gotten worried. I use the Veterans Administration hospital for my medical so I can't just call my dr and pick up meds at a regular pharmacy. Should I be okay for a couple of days or should I go to the ER? Any information would be appreciated, thank you. ## Hello, CW! How are you? In such cases, it's always best to give your doctor a call to see what they advise that you do, since there can be risks associated with stopping it abruptly or missing doses. The FDA lists the typical side effects of...

When stopping xarelto is it a process to quitting all of the sudden. I was told there were risk. I ask because I had 3 clots in the lungs and 3 in my legs about a month ago. But now I have a torn meniscus and need surgery The surgeon says ill have to be off the med for at least 7 days but my physician may think its too early ## It would be best to follow your surgeon's instructions, and just make sure your doctor is monitoring you regularly. There may be a slight risk from stopping the Xarelto, such as increased risk of clotting, but there is a definite risk if you are on it too close to surgery, since that increases your risk of bleeding and hemorrhage. Are you on any other medications? What is the current status of the blood clots? ## Is an INR required prior to eye surgery using ...

Swollen/painful left foot, behind the knee, wrists, left side throat gland? and the dizzy spells, severe headaches, blurred vision. It's enough to keep me almost bed ridden! I have read the side effects on this sight and feel at ease, but I and planning on flying (24hr flight) and feel very anxious about it. I am going oversesa tomorrow and my doctor changed me from Cartia to start today on Xarelto for the duration of my trip and then return to Cartia after a couple of days when i am home.My question is i took the 1st tablet this morning around 8am wIth my breakfast by 10 am i had pain in my left leg at the back probably say calf area. If this is a normal reaction thats fine just checking because of flying tomorrow i had a walk with support stockings and it felt better just still fèel it off and on while I am sitting down looking forward to hearing from you ## Why the switch? They treat different conditions and can actually both be taken, together. What condition is being treated? At this point, given the switch, it is hard to say if this symptom is due to stopping one medication, or s...

My menstruation was so bad on xarelto I needed a transfusion and was taken off xarelto. When can I expect my menstrual bleeding to stop? ## Hello, Julie! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem you had, that's terrible! Unfortunately, there's no way to be sure. As it cycles out of your body, things should return to normal, but it may take several weeks. Other side effects to stopping it, as listed by the FDA, may include headache, diarrhea and nausea. What was it replaced with? ## It was replaced with a IVC filter. No more blood thinners for me.

Hi, i just found out I am pregnant. Should I stop taking Xarelto as I know it is not good for my unborn child or should I continue taking it until I go to the doctors and they will switch me to shots instead of oral meds? ## Hello, Jabri! How are you? Congratulations on the pregnancy. When it comes to pregnancy, you should not make any changes to what you do, or do not take, without your doctor's advice. The FDA says that risk cannot be ruled out with this medication, but taking into consideration the abruptly stopping it could risk both your life, as well as the baby's, please wait, until you consult them, to be safe. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm off xarelto 3 days I feel like there is a Charlie horse in the leg my blood clot was in has anyone have this getting off xarelto. I'm calling dr as soon as they open has anyone else experienced this I was just told to take 81 mg of aspirin I see some people take other things like a vitamin E and a is that important ## That can be normal, when you stop taking it, but it is always a good idea to consult your doctor to be sure. Other withdrawal effects may include fever, chills, diarrhea, and rebound blood clots. The vitamins, such as e and a, are not actually proven to help. How are you feeling, now? Have you consulted your doctor, yet? Has there been any change?

I took a 3 month course of Xarelto to clear a DVT following an extended hospital visit. I took the last dose 3 days ago. I have had severe lower back ache and a headache since stopping. Is this coincidence or cold it be related? I was in the hospital with severe anemia and am still fighting to get my iron back up. Blood count is in normal range after transfusions. ## Hello, Lee! How are you? No, those are normal withdrawal effects, many people have reported such symptoms, after finishing their course of treatment. As listed by the FDA, you may also experience diarrhea and dizziness. If they continue past a few weeks, or get worse, you should consult your doctor. Is there anything else I can help with?

Been taking xarelto for 8 months after PE. Has anyone stopped after treatment? Risk of stroke scares me. ## Hello, Mary! How are you? Yes, there have been several people that have posted about stopping it, but with their doctor's approval and supervision. Along with the risk of stroke from stopping on your own, you also risk heart attack and other blood clots, as reported by the FDA. How much longer will you be taking it?

I've been taking xarelto since January. I saw a new doctor and he took me off of it. Will I have any side effects from stopping it? ## Hello, Michelle! How are you? Did you experience any adverse events? It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions for starting, or stopping a medication. This one can sometimes cause some rebound blood thickening, or clotting, according to the FDA, but if the doctor felt it safe for you to stop, then you should do as they've advised. Are you on any other medications? Did they doctor replace it with anything else?

I have been on xarelto for 9 months for a PE i never had. I just seen a pulmonologist today and he said I didn't have a PE and I should stop taking them. I am very upset with my doctor and everyone that has taken care of me. My question is should I be worried about stopping them abruptly? ## Hello, Susan! How are you? There should be no reason to worry, since you've been given the all clear. As reported by the FDA, there may be some rebound blood thickening. Thus, it is best to check with your doctor first to make be sure whether or not there is a special procedure they want you to follow for stopping it. It's always better to extra cautious, when it comes to such things. How did you end up being diagnosed with a PE? ## Had some shortness of breath and a bad cough. Went to s...

On Xarelto for 6 days (taking for Afib). On 6th day was removing a credit card from my wallet and received a terrible bruise on the end of my middle finger (no pain at all when I removed credit card). I read on internet that there is no antedote for stopping any severe bleeding if you are involved in an accident or require immediate surgery. I read that other blood thinners do have an antedote, but Xarelto does not. Is this true? If so, what can be done (sounds very dangerous to be on this). ## Hello, Carrol! How are you? Yes, that is correct. If you are severely concerned, you should speak to your doctor about taking an alternative medication. The FDA lists the easy bruising as a possible side effect of this medication, along with nausea, dizziness and headache. Is there anything else ...

Had a blood clot in my elbow Doc put me on Xarelto Then I bruisied my knee and stayed on 15 mg Xarelto twice a day My bruise was extreme and not healing Doc then said NOT to take anymore Xarelto. I thought you weren't supposed to stop. What is your advice? The elbow clot is okay. But the knee is outrageously swollen and black and blue and yellow ## There can be risks to stopping it, but in some cases, it is necessary to do so. Has the bruise improved, yet? Your doctor may have wanted you to stop for awhile, to let it heal up, then try something else. Easy bruising is a typical side effect of such medications, as listed by the FDA, along with nausea, dizziness, headache and increased risk of bleeding. What type of doctor did you consult? Have you considered getting a second opinion? ...
