My Dad, who had a PhD in Chemistry, used to use a brownish solution on me whenever I contracted poison ivy. I don't know exactly what it was, but he mixed (and stored) it in a semi-clear poly bottle and he had marked it (as best I can recall) FeS04. In addition to the iron odor, it seemed to have an alcohol odor as well. Whatever it was it was exceptionally effective at drying up and eliminating the rash from poison ivy. It left a noticeable yellow-brown stain on the skin, but it was easily washed off after treatment. Don't know if this was an old "Chem lab" cure, a home remedy, or what.
