My doctor has prescribed Imipram Hcl for esophalgeal spasms and irritable bowel syndrome. Exactly what is it? I was told an antidepressant being used for IBS with 50% people trying it being helped by it!

Yes, Imipramine is a Tricyclic antidepressant, the other mentioned uses are off-label, but some doctors have discovered efficacy for these conditions from experience.

As to the effects if you stop taking it, yes, there can be some. Our bodies get dependent on anything we ingest regularly, even if we aren't abusing it. You may experience insomnia, nausea, diarrhea and rebound depression.
