Restarting Pain Meds After Suboxone
(Newest replies first)

Updated

To make a long story short I was being prescribed opiate pain meds by the VA and when I got a new doctor they just cut me off with no explanation. I went into with drawls and needed some help feeling better and was told about the subxone program by a social worker. I was desperate for help so I went there and well I felt better. I was able to get a referral back to my spine doctor and they want me back on pain meds and to treat me as an entire patient not just a partial. I have no idea how long I have to wait between my last dose of suboxone and my new opiate pain meds. If it helps I was on 2mg for 4 complete weeks.

If you take pain pills while suboxone is still in your system, you will not feel euphoric effects, but you get some pain relief.....and not notice. I was on percs and gydros for 8 months then immediately switched over to suboxone, needless to say, I was thrown in to withdraw and suffered nausea and vomiting for almost two days. I now take about 0.25 mg of suboxone one time a day. It gives me horrible indigestion so my last dose was 1230pm yesterday. It's been 34 hours and I just took a 10mg hydro and I DO feel the effects of the hydro, so ultimately, it depends on how much and for how long you were taking the suboxone. I went 4 days one time without taking it and the only withdrawal I noticed was emotional, but I since continued to take the 0.25mg daily or every other day and it is much harder to go without it now and not feel some of the physical detox symptoms. You immediately get the runny nose, chills and night sweats then on comes the diarrhea and restless leg syndrome. I think 4 days without it is the most I've known anyone to go without having to either take a small amount to get relief or another form of opiate pain meds.

Hi. I started taking suboxone 16mg a day for one month now and eight months ago, I had my cancerous thyroid removed. It's really hurting. Usually the sub would work but now it isn't. I last took it 12 hours ago. When can I take hydrocodone and it works? How much hydro do I need to take? Please answer ASAP. I'm tempting to take it now but I don't want to waste it. Thanks

Hi, thank you for responding. After talking with my pain management doctor she told me I could start at any time. The only thing that would happen is my pain meds may not actually work until the suboxone has exited the receptors. She told me to take it as directed and when the suboxone starts to ware off my meds will fill in. My doctor told me often times they will tell patients to wait 3 days because since they don't notice the opiate pain meds working they take more and more so they can either feel high or have pain relief. In those situations they can take too much and od. I have never been an abuser so she was comfortable having me start it right away. I noticed it was about 2 days before my new pain meds started to work.

Hi cassi,

Sorry to hear about what had happened. From what I've seen posted in other related threads here, the average general guidelines for waiting in-between taking Suboxone then opiates is widely thought to be 3-5 days. I believe this is in-part due to buprenorphine's long half life of 24 to 42 hours, whereas it would still be active on your receptors (blocking opiates); for what many estimate to be about 3 half-lifes.

I hope you're able to find the level of relief you're looking for. ~Wishing you good health!
