Pooping Out Metformin

I take metformin er. I see it in my poop later in the day. I have a lot of diarrha.

Diarrhea is a normal side effect that can happen when taking Metformin. If it's very severe and occurring too frequently, then you should speak to your doctor about it, your medication may need to be adjusted.

As to seeing the tablet in your stool, that is also normal. The outer shell actually doesn't dissolve, when you take these controlled release tablets. They use a special release mechanism that's similar to a sponge, it slowly releases the medication into your body by gradually absorbing minuscule amounts of your stomach acid. Once done, the outer shell of the tablet is then expelled as waste.
