Orange Subutex No Longer Prescribed In Lieu Of Suboxone

Updated

To the people that are prescribed the Subutex and were asking the chat board questions about: If you are not a pregnant or breastfeeding woman as of July 1st 2015 then you will be prescribed Suboxone or something else but never just plain Buprenorphine. As far as the orange Halfmoon generic Subutex, you take them the same way that you would take any other kind of subutex / suboxone; they are sublingual.

What state are you referring to in the above comment? I'm a receptionist at a recovery clinic in PA we have not discontinued prescribing subutex. I have faxed or called in a total of 37 prescriptions this week alone. I think people come on the internet asking about different brands of drugs (not just buprenorphine) to see how other patients have reacted to the brand. Pharmacists can tell you what is in the ingredients, side effects, etc. My boss always compares it to asking the person selling you the generic lunchmeat at the deli vs asking a customer that has eaten the generic lunchmeat. If people go to Yelp for other people's opinions on everything, why shouldn't it be okay to get opinions on medication for goodness sake!

Cindy has a valid point about asking questions for other's opinions on medication or anything else for that matter, and I wanted to elaborate a bit more on that concept to help paint an image for its utter importance. In some cases I've stumbled upon through individual testimonies, there have been reports where a patient gets an answer that a pharmacist may not be authorized/allowed to provide accurate information on and will simply lie in order to avoid further confrontation, such as potential discrepancies of or relating to efficacy among various pain meds that provide more or less pain relief than their "allegedly" identical counterparts from other manufacturers. This is just one example, as from what I've witnessed at pharmacy drive-thru's, some pharmacists will not acknowledge any difference and point the finger back at the patient who is the one that truly knows better from having tried both versions of the same medication with "supposedly" the same dosage, only to find out that one works and one has no effect at all. My understanding is that a mainstream pharmacist wouldn't be so quick to call out their own product line as being inferior, despite numerous allegations suggesting otherwise. And in cases like that, a pharmacist would not be the go-to person for advice, but rather it would be the calling of other patients to step froward and testify to their own personal unbiased experience between two products. Just my two-cents, if you will. I'm not saying that all pharmacists are crooked by any means, but if their job as well as their job's reputation is on the line, who knows what they might be willing to say to cover up the truth? Thanks for reading.

I am currently in a doctor in Washington pa. I am having a hard time finding a pharmacy to fill my script. My doctor doesn't have any suggestions on where to go and I've called around to a ton of places and have tried several places. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Since you are a receptionist I figure you would know. I have searched on line for hours with no luck

I am a 36 year old father of three who is not pregnant or breastfeeding and I get 240 2mg subutex per month. I didn't have a reaction to naloxone they just helped my chronic pain better so I asked my doc to switch me and she did. I get 8 2mgs per day the 2s with the arrow this month but I think ill switch back to Roxane. Wanted to try these new orange 2s but the general concensus i get is they suck. Many doctors are scared to prescribe tex but not all are brainwashed by RB.

Response to a breezy. Not sure where you got your information but I am still and will always be prescribed just plain buprenorphine. I do not and will not be prescribed suboxone . Your info on July 2015 changes is wrong. Stop passing false information

Where I live here in in TN they did pass a law that went in effect July 1st that only pregnant or nursing women AND people allergic to naxolene or people with hep C ..but if you have hep C u do have to see a hepatologist to show ur liver enzymes are elevated enough that the naxolene will damage liver..... and I would much rather get other patients opinions that have actually taken the meds instead of a pharmacist only who is telling u what he/she has read

I'm a 39 yr old male, been taking subutex for 3 years....still not pregnant either. Hmmm. Not sure where people get this false information. Why forums are frowned upon

Uhm I have been getting subutex and I'm a guy. And that is not true all the way. There was a new law passed that you have to be pregnant breastfeeding or have documentation from a medical provider stating that you cannot take suboxone/Zubsolv for whatever their professional opinion is on it.

I agree totally CindyPa! I use the internet to gain as much knowledge on my medication as possible. Pharmacists and doctors don't always have all of the answers. I came here because I am highly allergic to Suboxone and am having some very rare side effects from it (severe joint and muscle pains and sore to touch) and even with that documented and personally witnessed by a doctor in the SAME FACILITY, another doctor there put me back on Suboxone and I am seeking answers and trying to find a new doctor. To me, that is pure negligence and malpractice and I don't want to go to a doctor that totally disregards their co-workers notes and is so afraid of the DEA, they are willing to RISK THE LIFE of a patient by giving them a medication with a documented severe allergy than prescribe something different!

That is not true . I am not pregnant and was just switched to Subutex.

I am not sure if this is an active thread or not, but I just wanted to add that subutex (as well as its generic equivalent) are not only prescribed to pregnant and nursing women. I am a 33 y.o. man from CT who was changed to this for developing what myself and the doctors think is anot original allergy. I was on suboxone for about 6 months before convincing the doctor I am in fact allergic. I lost upwards of 100 lbs and still to this day cannot gain. I could not keep food or liquid down for the entire 6 months I was on the suboxone. We believe I have a serious allergy to the Naloxone in the suboxone. It was extremely difficult to convince the doctor and even harder when I changed docs. It is not impossible to get on subutex but is difficult to find a doctor who is willing to prescribe it to a non pregnant man (like there is any other kind? Lol)

You are 100% correct, and why did that i**** say that s*** with such conviction? Like we are using our subutex to take over the world. Another i**** licking the heels of lawmakers because they think they are gonna "Clean up these streets" lol Yah.. good one lady. People on Subutex and/or suboxone are trying to get clean. The last thing they need is MORE legislation. Why do you think that government intervention is right or needed.

Hey just thought you should know that your information is inaccurate. I am a 33 y.o male who is not only male (but also not pregnant or breast feeding) and am currently prescribed subutex by my doctor. Such is done in a clinical setting with 1 month prescriptions. I am on the medication for none other than good old fashion opiate dependancy and am very successful on it. I was on suboxone floor over 6 months until the doctors realized it was killing me (I had a serious allergy to it causing me to lose over 100#s in the 6 months) and switch me over. So although very uncommon it is done and legally so.

Hey man! I am a 37 year old male who is on SUBUTEX ONLY (read it and weep Ms. Thang!!). I too am on it for the same reason, Although I have recently had my dosage increased for pain regulation because I had 6 back surgeries and 2 knee surgeries, and i refused opiate pain medication. talking to Ms Thang though... she wants to take away my subutex because i might use them to take over the world. That would put me back on pain meds and back on the needle. Good thinking missy! Maybe you should think about the effects of legislation before you follow it with such conviction! Anyways, I wanted to say hello Sir, and congratulate you in your recovery! I too had to be switched to subutex from Suboxone. Suboxone dropped my testosterone levels to below 80 points. (Which is less than that of a 90 year old man). and killed my sperm levels. Switched to subutex, and my levels are back up in the 500's and our second baby was born a year ago!!! Yeah... they better get this subutex right off the market.... It works 100x better than suboxone and has 1/10th the adverse side effects. I can see where they will be getting rid of it soon! They don't want mediation that does not bring in more money for medical bills.

You are wrong about not being prescribed subutex anymore. Im 32 year old man , been on buprenorphine for 2 years now, prescribed 3 a day(don't ever take that many usually ) and have never been scripted Suboxone . My doctor specifically does that way becausd biggest reason is that is cheaper . 90 bups a month cost me 238.56 Same everytime. I know I hear story's bout people paying 500 plus for that amount , not me never have . My doctor will continue to prescribe subutex and not Suboxone unless I happen to get insurance and then Suboxone happens to be cheaper with a Suboxone discount card. So not sure where your getting your info from but the doctor can script either subutex or Suboxone it's their discretion there is no law or rule.

This is false. If you have an allergy to naloxone you have to be switched to subutex its not just for the pregnant or breastfeeding. I did just have a baby though but I've been on subutex 2 years before that because or an allergy. But why would any breastfeed on this medicine. The subutex does get to your baby and if you stop too abruptly your baby cab go into withdrawal. I wanted to breastfeed but I was not willing to take that chance. My baby had no dependency problems because I got down to a small amount but I would never risk putting that crap back in my babies system. Do not breastfeed on this medicine.

Im sorry but your information is wrong . Maybe in your county that is what they have passed but where i live in MO, I am prescribed it. My doctor encouraged me to switch from the strips due to no insurance and them being so much cheaper. I am not pregnant I will add. I know its extremly difficult to find a doctor if your wanting subutex but some doctors if they trust you can give either one they want i guess. Im sure my doctor knows the law.

Please someone answer my simple question. Do the orange subutex by Actavis taste like orange suboxone?? I hate that taste. The Roxanne ones were bought up by Hikma but my pharmacy stopped buying from them due to cost now get hitech tiny useless pills. I feel like I'm taking a placebo. I will try the larger orange ones as long as they don't taste orangy.

I've been following this thread for quite a while now and have been on subutex for a few years as well, and have come to the general conclusion that there's a combination of problems leading to the false interpretation of how and when subutex is prescribed. In my opinion, and I am just a recovering junkie who is a mistake away from throwing it all back away, but my opinion is subutex is much easier to abuse given the right mindset, for starters. It's only in a pill form and contains no naloxone, it's pure bupenorphine (excuse my spelling that's not in spellcheck) with buffers of course, that can easily be misused. Beyond that it does not block the brain receptors in the same way that it would once you introduce the naloxone. So given the fact that the "Suboxone" style films (bupenorphine + naloxone) target the addiction in so many more ways than the original bupenorphine alone, doctors as a whole simply do not want to risk prescribing the lesser unless there is medical reason. As far as I know there are no federal laws prohibiting a qualified doctor to prescribe subutex to whomever they see fit, but it still falls back on their license, and if they are good doctors their conscience as well, if someone is to overdose or if the prescription is to be confiscated by police for any other form of investigation (sales, possession charges, etc.).

The primary purpose for the medication is to treat addiction. If the patient has a history of addiction and are actively using or newly recovering they fall into a general category of people who, let's face it are dishonest. They have a higher risk of abusing, selling, or even just losing or having it stolen. So since there is a better alternative, suboxone and similar films (rarely do they still write tablets of suboxone, if it even still exists I'm not 100%) they will tell you whatever it is that they have to tell you to refuse to write it. I've heard so many different opinions in the few years I've been on it, and I've had countless doctors actually provide the medication, and that's where I base my opinion off. I was, in the past prescribed through a clinic, and they went through doctors like crazy, so I heard tons of opinions. I have since gone to a private doctor for my prescription and am now I'm the process of tapering off. I had a severe allergy to the naloxone and that's why I had to switch, but regardless of which medication you are on if you use it properly and want it it's possible. I may seem long winded with my explanation but I've seen so much misinformation on this that I felt I should get as detailed as I could. This medication saved my life and I don't want someone to overlook the opportunity because of people talking on a subject they know nothing about. Hope this helps someone.

Ok. well I thought I was trying to reply to the guy from Washington pa about finding a Dr. I should have looked at the date before posting as it was around 2 years ago and I didn't realize lol. My bad. Also I do have something to say about being on subutex and not being pregnant or breastfeeding. I'm a 33 year old woman and am prescribed 56 8mg sublingual tabs a month.. and it is for drug dependency and i also use it for pain.. And one thing I cant stand is someone bashing us on subs bc we are trying to better our lives and stay off the bad sh*t so for anyone that is bashing us you need to take a long look in the mirror and ask yourself are you perfect? If your answer is no which it should be, bc no one is.. quit judging people that are on suboxone/subutex and give us/them a little support. We are better our lives and that is not something that should be judged..

I go to a doctor in Pittsburgh and I can tell you the hardest thing to find is a pharmacy that will fill your script. I got lucky and had to go to Ohio. If you can maybe go to Pittsburgh and you have a pa address you should be able to get into a pharmacy there. I am sorry this is so hard. I was discouraged the first day i got my script bc I'm like yes, finally got my script and then couldn't find a pharmacy to fill it.. I went all thru pa. Washington, Pittsburgh, and any where in between I think I called over a hundred pharmacies that day.. found out later that it's better to go into the pharmacies and ask if they will fill your script cus 9 times out of 10 when you call they just tell you no.. good luck and I hope this helps!
