Methadone Weight Gain Normal

Updated

I've read a lot of posts where replies to the weight gain question are always answered with its because your healthier and can afford to eat well, your not missing meals etc etc.Opiates i.e Heroin stop the body from absorbing sugars therefor you lose weight on top of the fact you cant afford to eat well. Methadone however is altered by the enzymes in your Liver so that your body can process it or absorb it and for it to stay in your body for a good amount of hours its absorbed in the same way as fat. Unfortunately for you that means the fat doesn't get broken down in the same way as when your not taking Methadone. That's the best way I can put it in layman's terms. On the whole GPs don't know all the ins and outs of the intimate workings of all the drugs they prescribe because its not their field. The best advice I can give is that, A.) Know that when you eventually get down to a lower dose and off you will regain control of your weight. Or B.) if you're on a very high dose 100 ml+ the sooner you can work your way down to below 50 ml the sooner you will claw back a little control of your weight. When you are addicted to Opiates your weight goes so low it becomes the norm and the weight gain then feels sooo alien but its important to remember the emaciated look was never healthy anymore than being overweight is so find out your BMI (body mass index) to see just where you should be at, it may surprise you. I hope this helps. Good luck

Sorry but that's rubbish.
The reason people put on weight on methadone is because methadone screws up hormone production.
It's called Opiate Induced Endocrinopathy.
Google it.

It's relieving to hear someone else say that. I trying to lose weight on 120 mg and capped out at 10 pounds lost and then decided to taper off of the program and I'm not totally off but I'm at 55 mg and I have lost 47 lb healthy. I finallllllllly have my confidence back. Plus, I feel amazing and not a zombie. 120 is not a therapeutic level and I finally realized that after working on myself.
