Medicaid For Methadone In Metaire Or New Orleans Louisiana
(Newest replies first)

Updated

I live in Metairie, Louisiana and attend a methadone clinic 25 miles away everyday. I have medicaid and would love a doctor close by or a clinic that takes medicaid. I'm a single mom trying to stay clean from drugs and methadone works but $165 every week plus gas to and from clinic everyday is taking every penny to my name! SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

They have a clinic here in Alexandria choices of Louisiana. It's 90-95.00 depending on dosage amount. They don't except insurance but it's cheaper than what your paying now hopefully this info helps! Good luck.

Okay no. Possibly you are exactly what the medical field is trying to avoid having happening, or else will say it so... If methadone works for you, you'll find a way to that.

The best advice I have for you is to switch to suboxone. Medicaid will cover it with the right provider. You just need to get a prior approval. I was in the exact same situation. It took awhile to get everything switched but if money is the problem hopefully it will help.Keep your head up and know you can make it!

There r 17 States that doesn't take Medicaid and Louisiana is one of them maybe we need to get a petition going to get it over turned

Louisiana Medicaid will not pay for methadone, Suboxone you might get lucky and find a primary care doctor who will prescribe you Suboxone and if your Medicaid approved it it normally takes 3 to 4 days for the prescription to go through but Louisiana Medicaid will only do that for 3 to 6 months

I am trying to work in New Orleans, but I'm tight on money and sick as heck making working near impossible. If anyone can point me to a really cheap clinic who can help me feel better so I can work and have money for a clinic I'd appreciate the help. {edited for privacy}

Bluemoon, that is actually what I meant, I apologize for not being more clear, but addiction treatment is what the SAMHSA regulations that I mentioned cover, so I wasn't referring to it for treating pain.

When it comes to pain treatment, any physician can prescribe it,but since it is very habit forming and can cause severe withdrawals, many of them are very reluctant to do so.

I'm guessing that those are the same reasons they would not continue prescribing it.

Additionally, you do need to be careful, because asking a doctor to prescribe a specific narcotic is construed by many of them as being drug seeking behavior.

Is there anything I can help with?

Verwon,
That is incorrect. Any licensed Louisiana doctor can prescribe methadone as long as it's for the treatment of chronic pain but not addiction. The difficulty is finding a doctor who will do this. I have found a couple, but they would only prescribe it one time each.

Peter, for any doctor, or clinic to provide treatment with it, they have to be SAMHSA certified, which means they have to follow the full federal laws for it.

What this means is that you will not be able to get such take home doses immediately. It can take almost a year, before you get a month's worth of take home doses and would still have to report in twice a month.

I need a Dr. who can prescibe Methadone in his office. With my job I cannot go to clinic each morning. It would be impossible. Someone in the Nem Orleans area or close. I need a once a month visit and thats it. Drug testing is no problem for me. I know methadone works for me. I've been on it before. I do not abuse Meth nor divert the medication. To keep my good-paying job I NEED this to happen. And soon. Suboxone has not helped me.

That is correct, not all states Medicaid plans cover Methadone addiction treatments.

In addition, not all of them allow private doctors to provide addiction treatment, with it, either.

Here is the contact information for the clinic that Kandis mentioned: 504-347-1120

New Orleans Narcotic Treatment Center
7606 Westbank Expressway
Marrero, LA 70072.

You may also want to look into treatment with Suboxone, there is a website at Suboxone.com that has a search so you can see if there are any doctors in your area that offer treatment with it.

Are there any other questions?
