Incidence Of Generic That Doesn't Work...

Updated

I've been on Vesicare and Detrol brand but when I became disabled was changed to Oyxbutynin 5mg BID (yes..I'm a RN in the ER for 40yrs). I noticed immediately that I began running to the bathroom with frequency and urgency again and went to my friendly pharmacist, Jill, who told me that generics are good but some have a slight % of not working as good as brand. She called another generic company and got me a different generic Oxybutynin and it has worked fine. Now I am on my way to the new Pharmacy to let them know the same, as they have me back on the old generic made by the 'other' company that did not work for me. In the change over of meds to a less expensive chain PHM (I lost my health ins, the end of May) I am back on the non working companies Oxybutynin. We'll see what can of worms I open now, but taking a med that doesn't work, even for FREE is not for me.
Has anyone else noticed this happen to them???
This tab that doesn't work is made by Qualitest Pharmaceuticals. It is light blue and on one side has a check mark and the #4853. The other side has a score mark to cut it in half if needed. The one generic that works for me, is made by Teva. I hope the new PHM will work with me

I have used this Qualitest Oxybutynin 4853V pill and realized that it is not working as well as my previous PLIVA 456 Oxybutynin. I have taken the PLIVA 456 for years and my insurance changed prescription programs this year -higher co-pay prices and obviously cheaper ineffective drugs. I will go to the pharmacist and see if they can get the good ones PLIVA 456. The Ditropan is so much more expensive.

I can't recall the exact % of generics that don't not work as well as brand, but it was like 11-15% and she said some work that much BETTER on some people, too. It's known and allowed by the FDA, so if you take something and it's not working, there IS a reason, and they CAN get a different generic just for reasons like that. I'm awaiting my current Pharmacy to get me the other generic (by Teva) on Monday. All I can speak about is what I have been through or know about.
I just changed Estradiol and notice a huge difference in the new one too! I'm not gonna pay my cash for meds that do not work! Thanks for your post...it's always nice to hear that I am not crazy.

Yes, that FDA does allow generics to differ in the active ingredient from their name brand counterparts by as much as PLUS or MINUS 20%, they consider this a safe therapeutic window.

However, in some cases, when your body is used to taking a medication that contained the full amount it should, or perhaps more than it should, of the active ingredient, then you suddenly switch to one that does not contain as much, it is not effective for you.

As the other poster suggested, the best thing you can do it tell your doctor and pharmacist about the problem and see if they can obtain it for you from a different company. If not, try a different pharmacy.
