Hello, Betty! How are you?

The epi pen should be used when you have trouble breathing and you may feel like you are going to lose consciousness, or your family should know to use it, if you lose consciousness and can't communicate with them. There are training videos you can watch for them and it should be shot into the thigh.

As to the Fexofenadine, while it can be taken in higher doses, it will not usually help fast enough, if you are having a severe anaphylactic reaction. In such cases, Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or your epi pen are the best choices, unless your doctor instructs otherwise, because they work much faster and could save your life.

For example, my husband is allergic to bees and I am allergic to some medications, as well as ingredients in some toothpastes and soaps, if he gets stung, or if my mouth/lips start to swell, both of us should use an epi pen immediately, it can mean the difference between life and death, while we wait for an ambulance to arrive for further treatment and stabilization. Once the EMTs arrive, they usually administer IV Benadryl (diphenhydramine) or the doctor at the ER will administer it immediately.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, drowsiness and dry mouth.

Do you know what you are allergic to?
