Yes, this is Prescription Vitamin D. It's used to remedy vitamin d deficiency when given by your doctor in these high dosages.

But actually, researchers do NOT recommend that you take prescription vitamin d, but instead simply take the same dosage of over the counter vitamin d in the form of vitamin d3 - also called Cholecalciferol.

See the page on Prescription Vitamin D to see why getting your vitamin d from the Pharmacist is actually a WORSE way to get your vitamin d than simply going to the drug store.

I am 65 and have been taking 50,000 units once a week for 3 weeks. Today, when I went to the bathroom, I noticed some spotting. Could this be from the vitamin D?

Edward Sumner Says:

Kerri and others...

Careful on your advice... 50,000 IU of Vitamin D is a prescription of vitamin D2 for people severely deficient on total Vitamin D. Docs prescribe it (you don't just GET it from your pharmacist without a script) because supplimentation has NOT worked. There are lots of papers on people taking up to 2000 IU and still being deficient. See Dr. MIchael Holick's paper on Vitamin D Inadequacy and implications for health

In general, take your supplimentation (~400 IU per day), get sunlight (10-30 minutes per day without sunscreen... more if you have dark skin). Make sure you get a total vitamin D test from your doc at your annual physical (they no longer screen for this so your doc has to order it special).

Best of luck!

Due to my Vitamin D level being below 10, my doctor put me on 50,000 units of Vitamin D once a week for 12 weeks starting today. I will then have a repeat blood test to check levels. She also wants me to continue taking my daily Oscal-D (1000 mg per day). I also take 150 mg of Boniva once a month. I am concerned about too much Vit. D. and potential side effects. Any advice is gratefully appreciated.

Thanks!

MD Says:

Don't worry about this supplementation, if it's Vitamin D3. D2 is the form of D3 that has proven to show some toxicity in results with overuse or high dosing. 50,000 IU of D3, taking 1 per week for 12 weeks, is typical and correct protocol. Kudos to your physician for being on the up-and-up of recent studies. There is much more data to come on D3 for treatment in many ailments, but for the sake of having proper levels, they are correct in what you've been suggested.

Go to vitamedmd. You are able to purchase a solid product (have a 1,000 IU- 60 pills- 9.99/mo. or 50,000 IU-12 pills- 19.99/3 mo.) that is recommended and formulated by physicians. They have a money-back guarantee. If you get nauseated by the product, send it back for a refund.

Bobbie Says:

The prescription "Vitamin D" your Dr prescribes is actually Vitamin *D2. It is to them an acceptable exchange and works the same as Vitamin D3. It does Not. You're wasting your money and time. Research this then buy your own vitamin D3 50,000 iu on the internet or whatever dosage needed. Read the papers that come with your faux D3 replacement prescription. It's D2.
