Potty Training Child On Miralax

Updated

I'm just desperate to get in touch with other parents who have already gone through this or are currently. My daughter out of nowhere became constipated at 7 mths old. Testing, specialist appts., naturopaths, diet after diet and our new norm has been Miralax for almost 2 years. Half a cap every day has been her latest dose for regularity. She will soon be 4 next month and still wears diapers, because she poos in her underwear, pull up, and diaper. What she wears doesn't matter. She has 6-8 mths ago successfully and willingly without my knowledge gone to the toilet and successfully had a number 2. We've just had regression honestly since summer 2017. It is so hard to pinpoint the exact reason she refuses to number 2 on the toilet. I think it's a combination of being afraid (she doesn't withhold at all) She is either loose or on the firmer side (but able to pass comfortably) she said she doesn't like to poop, attention? She is very obvious when she is going to do her business in her diaper. I have tried to get her to wipe herself up and get undressed after she messes herself. She regresses to a total infant crying on the floor and acting helpless when I know she is fully capable of undressing to her diaper and then I would of course step in.

She tells me after she has pooped and says she wants the change table. I've been thinking of taking the change table completely out of her room and taking her crib that is converted into a toddler bed away and going to a single bed. I thought removing all baby traces would help. We've done every reward under the sun, but nothing motivates her or encourages her to want to do it. I can register her for Jr. K in the next 8 wks and fear she will have to miss out on this as she isn't toilet trained for number 2. Fully potty trained, took underwear away because I was tired of the soiled messes and I told her that underwear is a privilege and for big girls. I feel frustrated, defeated and at my wits end why she won't go on the toilet. I feel like there is nothing left for me to try and that she will just do it when she is good and ready whenever she feels like it. I've tried not speaking about potty training to her. It's encouraging how everyone does it and to watch videos. She understands concepts and doesn't have any cognitive impairment or any developmental delay. Please reach out if you have experienced this or are currently experiencing this. Thank you in advance.

Hi, my daughter's 4 she had milk protein intolerance as a baby and since she's started being able to tolerate it she's suffered constipation. She only goes to the toilet on her terms. We've found a reward system (sticker chart and prizes don't have to be expensive for filling it). Seems to work. We bought a rodger watch from the charity ERIC for bladder and bowel problems. It helps and allows us to set 8 alarms which don't sound but vibrate on her wrist reminding her to try and she gets rewarded with a sticker for having the try. We don't reward the actual following through, but the trying, as the nurse we had said it's better to reward the try as that's the main step and you know yourself you can't go every time. So far this has been working. My daughter will hold it and hold it. She has a bladder and bowel of steel. It's been 3 days before now and she's needed catheterising and pessaries to make her go as an inpatient... Wish you all the best. It can be so frustrating... make it fun. We also have frozen stickers in our bathroom on the walls and on the toilet too. You can buy character toilet stickers that are washable.

I think Hollie has some good ideas here. Congrats Hollie!

When my son was a toddler, we discovered he loved toy cars, so one day we sat him down in his high chair and told him big boys don't wear diapers, but they get toy cars. But babies wore diapers and they didn't get to play with toy cars, because they were too young and it might be dangerous. Boom, that was the end of it, he woke up with a dry diaper wanting to go potty the next morning.

I did the same thing with his bottle, when he didn't want to give it up. He kept chewing up the nipples, finally we only had one left and I was not going to buy more, so I told him that was the last one, if he chewed it up, he'd have to use a sippy cup. He came over to me a day or two later showing me the nipple all chewed up, so I had him throw it away himself, then gave him a sippy cup, and that was the end of that.

I am not advising anyone to be cruel to their children, but going by NIH guidelines, I am saying go with what works for your child.

All kids are different, and we just kind of have to figure out what works for them to be the best parents we can.

Jamie, it seems she may have some embarrassment about pooping. It is hard to say what is causing it, it could have been caused by the odor, someone making comments about it being disgusting, or comments on a pet/or neighbors pet pooping. It may just be a matter of figuring out what has caused her issues, and then working from there. Given that she is on Miralax, that may make it even more difficult for her to control it.

Hollie, how is your daughter doing? Has there been any change?

I'd also like to clarify that no one should try these things, without consulting a medical professional to make sure the child doesn't have a blockage, or some other issue causing the problem.
