Lisinopril And Dry Mouth (Top voted first)

Updated

I have a very bad case of dry mouth. I think it is the lisinopril that is causing it. It is the only common denominator. I started having this issue in March. I have researched dry mouth over and over again, and the only factor that includes me is a side effect from the medicine. No other cause of dry mouth affects me. I am diabetic, but my numbers are always good. So I have a few questions:

1. Are there any cases of dry mouth caused by lisinopril?
2. Can someone be taking a medicine like lisinopril for a while (two years) before the effects show up?
3. If I go off the lisinopril, how long until the dry mouth goes away?
4. If I go off the lisinopril is there an alternate hypertension medicine that will work?

Thank you for your time.

Hello Rob,

According to the NIH dry mouth is listed as a known side effect of Lisinopril, although it is extremely rare. There are plenty of cases to support the theory that our bodies can suddenly decide that we are no longer tolerant of substances and medicines are no exception. A good example is my wife becoming allergic to eggs out of the blue, had been eating them every day for years and suddenly she became extremely allergic to them.

Due to the side effect being so rare I wasn't able to find anyone who has a scientific study or case study done on how long the dry mouth reaction would last or if it would go away even if you stopped taking the medicine.

As for alternate medicines I can't help you on this because that's really a question to be answered by a medical professional who has access to your medical history and lab results. It would be unwise of me to blindly recommend a medicine to you that could wind up potentially causing serious harm.

My suggestion is that you bring up this concern with your doctor as there is no way of knowing if the dry mouth condition could potentially be permanent or if that is even the root cause of your situation. Let us know what happens and how it works out for you. Best wishes.

I use Biotene products for dry mouth. They work pretty good. They also make a gum.
Hope this helps.

I have tried Biotene. It did not help at all. I am glad it works for you. But it does not work at all for me.
