How Long Should I Give Losartan Time To Work? (Top voted first)

Updated

I have been on medication for high blood pressure for six months and it has not come down much. I'm still at stage 2. In the last month my Doctor has changed my medication to losartan and now i'm on 100mg a day. I know it's the maximum dose, so how long would you give this medication or would you say it's not working for me?

Generally, it takes about 4 to 5 weeks for this class of medications to reach their full level of efficacy in your body. Has there been any change?

The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension.

I have now been given a 2.5mg called indapamide water tablet . This is to be taken with my 100mg losartan.
This has brought it down to 127 over 89 this morning. That's a big drop for me. Losartan alone didn't bring it down at all but my doctor said.. even if I was given a different high blood pressure tablet it wouldn't make much of a difference at this stage.
I see no sence in taking a 100mg tablet that did nothing but a 2.5mg did wonders

Re: Jason (# 5) Expand Referenced Message

Did you ever get an answer or figure it out? I was just prescribed losartan this morning to replace the lisinopril that caused a cough so bad that it dislodged a hernia repair surgery that I just recieved 3 weeks ago.
My blood pressure at the Dr. Office this morning was 169/87 so I'm hoping this losartan works soon.

Maxine, join the Club. I saw my Dr. yesterday and as usual my BP was "all over the place" as high as 190 / 91, it didn't surprise me, nor will I let it alarm me, that added stress and worry will only add to it. It's an ACE inhibitor of course. The prior one I had been taking was Simvastatin, the annoying chronic cough side effect I wasn't able to contend with after taking it for several years / 10. Perhaps it's the time of day that you take it (I take mine @ 10 pm, Losartan that is). the Blood Pressure monitoring device / cuff is in the Mail as I type. Take life one day at a time, eat right (fruits / veggies / GRAPES) No Salt, oatmeal, I'm sure you know about Booze & Butts, get some exercise, walk, even if you simply sit in a chair and elevate your arms upright over your head numerous times it's something, anything, go very very lite on the JUNK FOODS / Cloggers, simply try to eat healthy and move. I've had open heart bypass, brain surgery, fractured fibulas, cuboids, and have recently been in a semi - amnesiac state for a week as well as had hundreds of seizures over the years. Simply try and do your best, that's life. Walking into the Supermarket I saw a blind gal with her stick sitting on the curb obviously waiting for something. We've got it made compared to some, one day at a time. I had fractured an ankle which limited my activity back in 2008, and had lived a very passive lifestyle, hardly any exercise and consequently the GOO only lined the arteries perhaps and I no longer need to wear an ankle brace so now when I move that GOO probably increaces the BPI so now it's time to concentrate on FOODS, types and portion size.

My Dr switched me from clonidine to losartan yesterday. I checked my blood pressure this morning and it was 144/98 with a heart rate of 136. How long before I should start seeing a drop in it?
