High BP is a condition which has many causes. There are many drugs and each drug has a different mechanism of action. It is possible that often without identifying the correct cause a drug is recommended. The question is-can the use of drug for hypertension cause other medical conditions in a patient?

Essential hypertension is the classification of your condition that is decided when no other cause has been found.

For instance, in some people hypertension can be cause by kidney problems and, in such cases, it would be called secondary hypertension.

And yes, getting the type of readings you mentioned, with no other discernible cause, would be considered essential hypertension.

As to the medications, yes there are risks associated with them, just as there are with any medication for any condition. What you need to discuss with your doctor is whether the possible benefits to you outweigh the associated risks.

For instance, if you let your blood pressure continue running high, then you risk organ damage occurring, even if it doesn't rise beyond its current levels.

If you let it go and it starts to go even higher, then you are at risk of heart attack or stroke.
