Please tell me if the combination of Amtas and Diltiazem is safe or if it has some side effects for a heart patient? ## Has your doctor instructed you to take both of them? These medications are often prescribed together to help treat high blood pressure and certain cardiac conditions. The NIH lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. However, it would be far more dangerous to not take them. Are you on any other medications? ## I was prescribed Amtas 10 in the morning and Diltiazem 90 and Minipress XL at night. Is it safe to take these medications together? I was told by my dr that I cannot take Amtas and Diltiazem. I also have a kidney problem and my creatinine level is 4. Please advise.

Can these two drugs, when taken together, cause strokes in women over 55? I was told by a pain management doctor that I should not take these two together. ## I see warnings about taking them together causing increased bleeding risks in those with kidney disease, but nothing specific to women over 55, as listed by NIH and FDA reports. There are many cases where these are prescribed together to treat various heart conditions. Are you on any other medications?

I have been taking Diltiazem TR 240 mg manufactured by oceanside, which is the generic for Tiazac. However I cannot find any information on the 'TR'... ## Hello Kathy! How are you? Is there anything else I can help with?

What is the difference between Act-Diltiazem CD 180mg and Teva-Diltiazem CD 180mg? My prescription was changed. ## It is the same medication, just manufactured by different companies, which is very common with generics. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Teva and Act are abbreviations for the names of the manufacturers. Is there anything else I can help with?

I'm taking Cartia 180mg and recently overlooked a bottle of about 25 with an expiration of about 1 year ago. Is there really any reason I can't take these? ## Hello, Elaine! How are you? My Dr is reducing my diltiazem from 120 twice a day to once a day, and says he is concerned about this water retention. I am on Jed's for the water retention and I am concerned that my heart rate will go bonkers. ## I am concerned that by reducing my daily dose of diltiazem (120)twice a day to just one dose of 120 will cause my heart to go back into Afib.the doctor is concerned with the edema in my legs,he has me on a diuretic.,and has me on just once a day with the 120 dose of diltiazem.( just started). I am also on metropol 75 twice a day. ## It is always best to follow your doctor's instructions and the only thing you can really do is take the dosage they have told you to take and see what happens. Since you are on the other medications, they should help prevent a dangerous s...

I have some severe back pain and wonder if the meds can cause it? I have Chrohns too which I suspect could be part of problem. ## Yes, they could cause that as a side effect, along with nausea, dizziness, headache, and increased urination, according to FDA reports. How long have you been taking these medications? Do you take any others?

Is it normal to have 4 little white pills inside the capsules? When my friend was taking her meds she found little white pills with her capsules and when she broke a capsule open, she found 4 little white pills inside the capsule. Is there supposed to be these in there or is there supposed to be beads inside? ## If she is taking the extended release, they must be taken whole, not broken open. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. What are the markings on the capsules she is taking?

My new Dr has me on "diltiaz er xr". My previous Dr had me on "diltiaz er cd". Is there a difference? ## They are both the same, just different ways of designating them as being time released. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination, and hypotension. Is there anything else I can help with? ## I am losing my hair which I read may be a side effect of Diltiazem. Is this true.

I am 39 and recently had quintuple bypass surgery. They took one artery out of each arm, a vein from my leg and used my mammoral artery. The surgeon said I would have to take diltiazem for about 3 months post-op so my radial arteries wont pulse and close off. My cardiologist says that I need to be on it for the rest of my life. My surgeon is also a cardiologist. Who should I listen to? Is the cardiologist just saying that to get kickbacks? Three months is a big difference from the rest of my life. ## Hello, Jay! How are you? Generally bypass patients do need to take such a medication for the rest of their lives, your surgeon may have just said it would be 3 months, initially, then you should be reevaluated to see how you are doing. Unless he owns a pharmacy, there is no way for your car...

I have been told by CVS that Diltiazem CD 120 mg cap is discontinued ## I haven't been able to find anything on this, but you are not the first person who has been told that by their pharmacy, so I can only assume that it's correct. The best suggestion I can make in this case is to contact your doctor and ask about getting an alternative medication prescribed. Running out and missing doses could be very dangerous, so you definitely need to avoid doing that. Does anyone know more about this? ## If Diltiazem 180 was discontinued, it's interesting that I just picked up my prescription today. Was told by CVS several months ago that Warfarin in 3mg pills was not available, but I found out it was. They apparently just switched suppliers. ## I have taken Diltiazem CD for about 10 y...

I ran out of my Diltiazem, have missed 2 does and will miss 2 more before my medication arrives in the mail. The Dr is closed today Sunday and Monday for ML King day. Is this dangerous to withdraw this med for 4-5 days? ## Unfortunately yes, there can be some risks related to missing doses, according to the FDA, including elevated blood pressure and heart rate, which could put you in danger. If you begin to experience severe dizziness, chest pain, or a pounding headache, please seek medical attention. In the future, it is always best to request your refill a few days, before you will run out, to ensure that you don't miss any doses. How are you doing? Did you experience any problems?

I take a cartizem 180 er in the morning. I had a cardiac ablation just about two months ago and I'm experiencing a more rapid heart rate than normal that goes on for about 3 hrs. I took a 60 mg cartizem at 12:00. When can I take another one? I'm still experiencing rapid on and off heart rate. ## Hello, Julie! How are you? I am sorry about the problem you're experiencing. When is the rapid heart rate occurring? Is it any specific time of day? After eating? After certain activities? You should not adjust your dosage, without your doctor's approval. While I know these experiences are scary, you need to get in and see them, as soon as possible, before making any changes, or adding more doses. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nau...

Just had back surgery. My blood pressure has been low so I stopped taking the diltiazem and cut the lasix in half to 40 mg plus the inspra 25 mg. My blood pressure is good during the day and at night is 115/70. Is this the right thing to do? ## Hello, Lou! How are you doing? Has there been any change? Did your doctor approve these dosage adjustments? The biggest concern is that if you drop the dosage of these medications too abruptly, or stop one suddenly, it could result in a rebound effect, according to the NIH, which could cause the exact opposite problem of dangerously elevated blood pressure and heart rate. If the occurs, it could place you at risk of heart attack, or stroke. How low has it been, since the surgery? Are you on any other medications? ## Thanks for the input I'm b...

Taking diltiazem 180 ER at bedtime. Just started 75mg HCTZ in morning for edema in ankles and feet. I am wondering if the pain in my ankles and hip and the edema is being caused by the diltiazem I have been taking apx 6 months, I have had the pain that long but no edema. The diltiazem was control on my BP nicely. ## Hello, Charlie! How are you? It is possible, it has been known to cause such symptoms as side effects, according to the FDA. It may also cause headache, nausea, dizziness, increased urination and hypotension. It might be better to speak to your doctor about trying a different medication, rather than adding more medications. Unfortunately, there have been many cases, where someone has been given another medication to treat the side effects caused by a different one…. an...

I have been on Diltiazem for two months and my sinuses are dried up and I am totally stuffed up all the time. Could this be a side affect of taking this drug. I have tried everything else to figure out why this is happening (Catscan, etc) without success. ## Yes, congestion can be a side effect of most of these types of medications that are used to treat high blood pressure and cardiac issues. The FDA lists other typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension. Have you tried anything to clear up the congestion? I've found that Mucinex sometimes helps, you may want to ask your doctor about trying it. ## Thanks...I will investigate Mucinex.
