Acyclovir/Aciclovir is an antiviral medication, so it may be used to help treat any viral condition ranging from AIDs to herpes, including simplex 1.

As to how often to take it for a cold sore and for how long, you should follow the instructions provided by your doctor.

In most cases, however, it won't help much after the cold sore has already erupted. It works better at prevention and should be taken as soon as you start showing the signs of developing one.
