My 11 year old son will start Hunira in a couple of days. Does anyone have any suggestions or advice on what we can expect. He has Juvenile onset spondyloarthritis

Based on my research, Humira (adalimumab) is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. It works by blocking the action of TNF, a substance in the body that causes inflammation. In addition, Humira (adalimumab) has been shown to reduce the signs and symptoms of, and is approved for treatment of, ankylosing spondylitis.

HUMIRA ("Human Monoclonal Antibody in Rheumatoid Arthritis") is marketed in both preloaded 0.8 mL syringes and also in preloaded pen devices (called Humira Pen), both injected subcutaneously, typically by the patient at home. For subcutaneous injection, the injection sites should be rotated. If solution is discolored do not use. Individuals with latex allergies must take caution as the needle caps of the pre-filled syringe may contain latex. It cannot be administered orally because the digestive system would destroy the drug.

Adverse reactions:

Because adalimumab suppresses TNF (which is part of the immune system)- latent infections, such as tuberculosis, can be reactivated and the immune system may be unable to fight new infections. This has led to fatal infections.

According to the product labeling, after a number of studies and reports of adverse events in patients receiving adalimumab, including: [serious and sometimes fatal blood disorders, serious infections including tuberculosis (TB) and infections caused by viruses, fungi, or bacteria, rare reports of lymphoma and solid tissue cancers, rare reports of serious liver injury, rare reports of demyelinating central nervous system disorders, rare reports of cardiac failure]- the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a black box warning to doctors which appears in the product labeling of adalimumab and the other TNF drugs instructing them to screen and monitor potential patients more carefully. Anaphylaxis or serious allergic reactions may occur.

Unfortunately, there's no way of knowing ahead of time how well a particular medication might end up working for your son since doctor's can only assume that it will be effective based on medical records, health, age, weight, whether or not he's taking other medications, body chemistry, etc. Just be sure to check in with your doctor if he starts noticing any negative changes in his body after starting Humira.

I would never put my child on it. I spent 2 weeks in intensive care and was intubated 8 days and ended up with legionnaires disease due to humira.. Not to mention vision damage and I am now on oxygen. I am only 45 years old.
