What Are Night Cramps

I am Diabetic, and used to get a lot of very painful Cramps, mainly at nights. 2-3 per night, 4 -5 times a week. I'd tried most things, but with little effect. So I discovered that what would help was Potassium and Magnesium, as it feeds the Muscles. Tried an effervencent pill, and that gave me violant diarrhoea. (Aquilea). Then I was told to try half a Banana a day. I have now been 95% free of Cramps for 3 years. Great. ## Very glad you found something that helped you. Yes, the potassium is especially important to our muscle health and, if you are low in it, it will often cause bad muscle cramping. However, too much of it can also be dangerous, so please make sure you don't overdo it. There is a blood test your doctor can do to check the level for you. I always drop low, for re...

I don't know what to do for this problem I need medical advise I can not stop tle leg cramps at night? Please advice urgent Thank you ## Hello, Juan! How are you? I'm sorry about the problem you're having. According to the NIH, the most common cause of nighttime leg cramps is low potassium levels. You should have yourself checked out to see if that's what might be causing yours. If so, supplementing potassium is a simple matter and many people do it just be eating bananas regularly. Another possible cause would be dehydration. How much fluid do you take in each day? Are you on any medications? ## Night cramps in legs... I’ve had ‘em for a long time, but they became more frequent as I aged until I could say ‘every’ night. More like every morning at...

Have your potassium levels been checked? A low potassium level has also been known to cause night time leg cramps, so the solution could be as simple as taking a low dose supplement, or increasing your dietary intake of Potassium. I suffered from them for many years, as well, until it was discovered that my potassium levels were very low. ## Hi ingebroesel, After 7 years of searching for a dx (without insurance and I was desparate), a research physician diagnosed me with "genetic ...

Knee problems from years of racquetball - miniscus are gone - doc prefers me do the Rball for heart health rather than knee replacement. (ME TOO!!!). Incredibly - Meloxicam (15 mg / day) has ZEROED the pain. The problem I have developed after about two months is leg cramps - usually calf muscles & usually during the night - a couple of times a week. Is there a fix for these leg cramps? ## According to the NIH, the most common cause of nighttime leg cramps is low potassium levels in the body, this medication has been known to cause dehydration in some people that take it, which could contribute to the problem. How much fluid do you take in each day? Do you eat any potassium rich foods, such as oranges or bananas? ## I drink 6 to 10 Gatorade G2 (smallest size) a week and eat bananas o...

Will sulfameth/TMS 800 causes cramps ? I've been takeing it for a week and have bad cramps in the top of both feet at night. ## Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim is an antibiotic that is used to treat various types of infections. It is not listed as causing cramping like that, except for in the stomach on some rare occasions. Usually night time cramping of the legs and feet is caused by being low in Potassium. Do you eat a proper, nutritious diet? Are you on any other medications, such as diuretics that can cause you to lose Potassium? ## I have taken two does of Sulfameth and my feet and toes are severely cramping up. Please advise.

I've been on methadone now for about 5 months. It's a pretty low dose. I also unfortunately top it up with alot of codeine. I have a really great doctor and team who are doing their best to help me and I am a difficult client! Anyway, long story short, the last 6 weeks or so I am in alot of pain at night time. I mean alot. It's extreme cramping and muscle pain. It lasts into the morning and I walk badly for the first hour or so after getting up. I'm plagued with nightmares too. I think I suffer from ptsd. I thought maybe the nightmares are causing anxiety and tension leading to body cramping? Does any one here know what is wrong or am I alone ## Methadone does not cause muscle cramps. Lack of water causes muscle cramps. Increase your methadone & get off those codeine...

Could Zanidip be causing leg cramps at night. I am either up with leg cramps or up to the toilet. I drink 2 lts of water a day, and if that drops even the smallest bit, the cramps get worse. Something is dehydrating me. ## Zanidip contains the active ingredient Lercanidipine, it is a calcium channel blocker that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure, but is also effective at treating certain cardiac conditions. By their very nature, many of these medications increase urinary output and can cause dehydration. However, another thing that could be causing the leg cramping is low potassium levels. Some of these medications can cause it and it will cause leg cramps, just as easily as the dehydration. It could even be a combination of both, with one problem feeding the other. Hav...

Hello i take one amloretic plus one ciplavasc 5 does that cause severe leg cramps morning and night plz help ## Hello, Linda! How are you doing? Has there been any change? It is most likely due to the Amloretic, since along with removing fluid from the body, it can also deplete potassium, and low potassium is the most common cause of leg cramps, according to the NIH. You could also be dehydrated, which could just worsen the problem, since that is another possible side effect, according to the U.S. FDA. How much fluid do you take in each day? What types of foods do you eat, anything rich in potassium, such as oranges, or bananas?

My Dr. has put me on Benazapril/Amlodipine for high blood pressure. I get terrible leg cramps in the night, and have to get up and walk around to relieve them. Is this unusual? I am also taking a Potassium tablet, which Dr. is aware of. ## I too have been getting leg cramps and was not sure why, thanks for the post Rae. ## I've had this happen every time my Dr. gives me a diuretic. ## I'm going to have to ask my Dr. about that, once again I thank you for sharing. ## Diuretics can cause this, they can cause dehydration as well as low potassium, both of which can cause leg cramps. Please talk to your doctor about this. ## Doctor knows about it, but she's not the one getting up in the middle of the night, is she? ## Whenever I get leg cramps, I add more potassium. After twice being prescribed Pulmison as part of the treatment of allergic asthma I got severe muscle cramps about 3 days after stopping the course. The first course in April was for 3 days and the second in June for 5 days. The muscle cramps were so severe that I could not walk. Both calves and feet cramped up. Bending over to try and rub them meant my diaphragm went into spasm and then may back and then my neck and forearms and fingers. It was unlike a usual muscle cramp in that I was unable to release the cramp with warmth, massage or pressure and that the cramps kept moving around. This happens usually at night and lasts for a couple of days. I do have quite a magnesium rich diet so I am sure it is not a lack of magnesium and certainly didn't feel like the sort of muscle cramps ...

Since I started taking this I have been experiencing really bad foot cramps. Off and on during the day and some nights life tonight its really bad and causing me to lose sleep. Dr told me to make sure to eat leafy greens which I do daily and also bananas for potassium but they won't stop. Any suggestions? ## Hello, April! How are you? Are you also being careful to take in enough fluid each day? This medication is classified by the FDA as a diuretic, so it works be removing fluid from the body. You may be experiencing the cramping due to dehydration. That's always an early warning for me that I'm getting dehydrated, which I have a bad habit of doing. Other side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, hypotension and increased urination. ## I too am having le...

MY doctor told me I need for my stomach. So what is this and the side effect? ## I took 1 metoclopram 10mg and during the night i got savear charlie horses in both legs. They were in knots and i coudn't get them out by rubbing them and i tried to stand up and i couldn't stand up it hurt so bad. I kept rubbing them hard and finally could walk them out. It really frightened me. Is this a side effect? ## Metoclopramide is is used to help with digestive motility. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, seizures, and rapid weight gain. And yes, Mavis, it has been known to cause muscle spasms, but you should have this checked out by a medical professional, because sometimes leg cramps are caused by a potassium deficiency. I went to my MD who did not look at my blood pressure, temperature or heart rate; this after I gave the MD my history. I got sick suddenly on Tuesday night, with a high temperature, diarrhea, vomiting and body pain. They did not examine me. I was put on a bed and taken straight to the ER room for vitamins in drip and Buscopan. I was then sent home with a script only to find out it is only tans 3x 500mg one a day, plus Zelitrex tabs which is used to treat and prevent (recurring) infections with the herpes viruses. These include the viruses that cause: Cold sores (herpes simplex) - a burning and/or tingling sensation on or around the lips that develops into painful, fluid-filled blisters with scabs. I am confused as I do not have cold sores and they did not even look at my history. Please...

I have leg cramp at night. Will evion 400 help. If yes, what is the dose? ## I GET LEG CRAMP AT NIGHT, TAKING EVION CAPSULE ONE AT NIGHT, WILL IT HELP ## No, this is a vitamin E supplement, so it might not help with night time leg cramps. The NIH warns that it may cause nausea, and diarrhea, due to its potency. It is usually most beneficial for the health of your hair, and skin. Many times, nighttime leg cramps are caused by having too low of a potassium level. Do either of you take any medications? When did you have your last blood work done by your doctors?

Hi, I am concerned. I had a baby 2. & 1/2 months ago and was cleared by my OBGYN to begin birth control. I asked to be placed on Ortho Lo but apparently Sprintec is the new generic available. Anyways, I've been on it 3weeks now and began my period last week (2weeks early) the bleeding on this pill is excessive. On top of that I have been having huge clots (last night 5 and 1 this morning). I am concerned. Is this normal?? Regardless, I didn't take my pill last night. I am planning on stopping these pills because the bloating and stomach cramps are too much for me. I am very concerned about the bleeding though..is this normal or should I be getting ready to go to the ER? ## That can occur, when you're new to taking an oral contraceptive, as reported by the FDA. I have arthritis everywhere, especially in the ankle, and also osteoporosis. For the osteoporosis I am 67yrs. I am taking Alendronic Acid once a week and have done for 4 yrs. For arthritis I take one each of the following daily (and have done for years):- one Glucosamine Sulphate, one Omega 3, one Zaldiar tablet and one Beline capsule. It seemed to work well for me except for severe hourly nightime lower leg cramps which obviously prevent me from sleeping. A month ago, I suspended all medication and have been in terrible joint pain and feel awful, however, the leg cramps stopped overnight. I now know that it is the Beline capsules which give me the severe cramps as I started to take them again yesterday. I need to know if there is a successful alternative to Beline? I have read about on...

After taking Symbicort for about six weeks, I had a night of terrible calf cramps which were so severe that I developed a bruise on my upper calf. I have also developed boil-like lesions under my arm and on my chin. I did not relate it at first to taking Symbicort, but called the doctor and he took me off Symbicort. Are these side effects unusual for taking Symbicort? ## Symbicort contains a steroid, so yes, it can cause such side effects. But the cramps you experienced seem to have been rather extreme and more intense. It's likely your doctor didn't want you to have to keep dealing with that misery. Are you on any other medications? Has the acne started clearing up, yet?
