Laxatives (purgatives, aperients) are foods, compounds or drugs taken to loosen the stool, most often taken to treat constipation. Certain stimulant, lubricant and saline laxatives are used to evacuate the colon for rectal and/or bowel examinations, and may be supplemented by enemas under certain circumstances. Sufficiently high doses of laxatives may cause diarrhea. Laxatives work to increase the movement of feces along the colon.[1] Some laxatives combine more than one active ingredient. La...

I am taking Equate Stool Softener at the suggestion of my Doctor for a year or two now. One 50 mg tablet every evening. I am wondering where these tablets are made .... I know it is a Walmart product but where do they have it manufactured. The reason I ask is that one hears of stories about substitute ingredients being put into the formulation and I am a litlle concerned about that. Thanks. ## To be honest, I am not sure, it depends on who the manufacturer is and Wal-Mart does use several. Is there are manufactured listed on the product packaging? Is there a reason your doctor has had you on this for so long? That is very unusual, because your body can become dependent on it, which means if you ever stop taking it, you might suffer from severe constipation.

i want to just s*** everything out so i can start my starves again. i ate for 3 whole days and im starving again. if i take too many is it possible to OD? ## Hi Kaylee, Sorry to hear about your situation. It's definitely possible to OD on virtually any medication. But if you're concerned about taking too much of one thing, what I would suggest is actually trying a different approach altogether. There are several types of foods you can eat throughout the day to help regulate bowel movements, so you don't have to rely on just the one medication. A combination of soluble and insoluble fiber from fresh fruits, vegetables, legumes, and whole-grains, can also help soften bowel movements. How long would you say this has been a problem for?

hese pills were found loose in a drawyer. It is possible that someone in the family injested 2 of them in error. I would just like to know what they are for sure. Previosly there were Ibuprofen tabs in this drawer however I have ruled these pills out as Ibuprofen ## These aren't listed in our U.S. prescription drug databases, which makes me suspect that they are something available over the counter. If that is the case, it may be hard to track down exactly what they are, because those products aren't required to list their imprints with the FDA. Does anyone recognize this tablet and marking? ## S44 marking on beveled reddish brown tablet indicates WalMart Equate stool softener (OTC)

it is a stool softener ## I'm sorry, but I can't find a listing for this in our U.S. prescription drug resources. If it is something that's available over the counter, then it may be hard to track down, because they aren't required to log those imprints with the FDA. Does anyone recognize this tablet?

severe anorectal pain despite stool softeners, steroid/xylocaine suppositories, procardia rectal gel to avoid spasms, and sitz baths. It is now 6/10 but was up to 9/10 and unbearable. Only 1.5 weeks of therapy and pure torture. Other suggestions? ## Hi Punky, just curious-- have you been able to eat the 20 grams of fat with each dose? What foods do you eat to get your 20 grams? If 1 is a stool softener can i take 2 to make it a laxative? I have constipation from my opioids. ## Hello Shirley, Excellent question. Stool Softener, AKA Docusate Sodium, commonly comes in 50mg and 100mg soft gels. I too have OIC (Opioid-Induced Constipation). Docusate Sodium is but one part of my regimen for my personal amount of Opioids. I also take a capful of Miralax almost every day. I also take 4 Docusate Sodium Softgels of 100mg each for a total of 400mgs. I'll take the softgels every other day. Now for a specific answer to your question: 1 soft gel of Docusate Sodium is a stool softener, of course. 2 softgels is a doubling of the stool softener and are simply just more stool softener. It doesn't convert to a laxative based on simply using a larger dose. Just as my 4 10...

i took a dose of miralax saturday, then another on sunday with no results along with stool softeners that my doctor gave me for post operation. someone told me about a faster acting laxative that i took sunday night and i finally had relief. the problem is it is now wednesday night and i have been going to the bathroom every 2 hours and have loose stools. when will it stop. after every meal also i have to go immediatly. ## At this point, it is just going to take time for it to process out of your body, so things return to normal. It is likely that you should have given the Miralax a longer amount of time to work, some laxatives can take 48 to 72 hours, and if they haven't worked by then, you are told to consult a doctor. The Miralax FAQ on their website even lists that it can take 1...

I was prescribed HYDROCODONE/APAP 10 M after a hernia operation and used just a few days with a stool softener. That was over a week ago, and I have had urinary incontinence ever since. I never had that problem... I am a 74 male. Is this a side effect of the drug? ## Have you consulted your doctor? It isn't a common side effect, but it has been reported in a few instances. However, you should consult your doctor to determine if it was caused by the medication, or if it is due to some other problem. What type of hernia operation was it?

round cranberry colored pill with numbers 544. the 44 is imprinted deeper. ## I believe that this is Walmart's Equate Stool Softener Plus Stimulant Laxative (Compare to Peri-Colase). It contains two active ingredients: Docusate Sodium 50mg and Sennosides 8.6mg. (As of December 2014) ## The prior identification is correct, it is still available in this same formulation. It is a laxative. The FDA warns that it may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea. Is there anything I can help with?
