Will smz/tmo ds 800-160 help with strep throat? ## From what you've listed, this would be Sulfamethoxazole with Trimethoprim, according to the FDA, it's a generic for the antibiotic Bactrim and can be used to treat various types of infections. Typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea. Have tests confirmed this? Why have you been on it for 2 months? I have an open wound It burns. I have been cleaning with peroxide and using Neosporin It's now red around it. Don't know how I got it. Also I have tiny red spots, maybe ant bites or poison ivy. They itch. Because of these I can't sleep. I have a few SMZ/TMP. Can I use them.? ## Hello, Cindy! How are you? Actually, you shouldn't be using peroxide on it, it can actually damage the surrounding healthy tissue and delay or prevent healing. In most cases, when it is used, it's just for the initial cleaning of the wound, but usually, your better off just cleaning it with soap and water. Have you consulted your doctor? This medication says you should stay out of the sun, just wondering why? What would the side effects be if I was in the sun for a while? ## Most medications that tell you to stay out of the sun contain photo-toxic/light-sensitive chemical properties that may have an effect on your skin (possibly rash, or quickly sunburn, etc) if your in direct sunlight for a given length of time. Also one could experience nausea or headache from this. I'm not aware of any other possible side effects, but I would suggest wearing lots of high spf sunblock if you do go out in direct sunlight after taking the medication to help prevent any of this from happening. Or if you are able to do so, try and schedule to take this medication in the evening hours so you don't even have to worry about going out...

How long is this med good to take? At what point does it begin to lose its efficacy? ## Hello, Terry! How are you? If it is in a bottle as dispensed by your pharmacy, then the expiration date is one year from when it was filled for you, because that bottle can leave it exposed to the elements that cause degradation, so it begins to lose efficacy after that year. If it is in the original factory sealed container, then they are usually good for 4 to 5 years, until the seal is broken. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash and diarrhea.
