Hi there, I am an Industrial Radiographer by trade! Using Ir192 isotopes, can I use sski tablets for treatment of radiation received during work? What are the benefits of taking sski regularly? ## Based on my research, SSKI (Potassium Iodide Oral Solution, USP) is a saturated solution of potassium iodide containing 1 gram of potassium iodide per ml. Although I've also read about Potassium Iodide used for radiation treatment/prevention, this particular medication is indicated for use as an 'expectorant' in the symptomatic treatment of chronic pulmonary diseases where tenacious mucus complicates the problem, including bronchial asthma, bronchitis and pulmonary emphysema. The prescribing information states that "it may also be used for other conditions as determined by your...

salivary gland destroyed as a result of radiation and chemo therapy. How does one replace inability to produce saliva. Was told there is something called miracle mouthwash which may help. Not sure if it is a prescription or over the counter mouthwash. Any other suggestions as to how to replace saliva is needed. ## I know that there are artificial saliva products available just for such cases. They are also used by people who were in accidents that resulted in damage to the salivary glands. Some are available as a spray and some as drops. Your doctor should be able to prescribe it for you and most pharmacies carry it. The Miracle Mouthwash is a regional item, meaning that the name and ingredients can vary depending on where you live. It is another thing your doctor would have to prescrib...

I had radiation and chemo for a tumour situated in the anal canal. The treatments caused chronic nerve pain in that area. My doctor prescribed Lyrica. It started with pain under my feet and my hands. Now my whole body, joints and muscles are affected. I get up in the morning and my whole body is stiff with pain. I also experience blurry vision, memory loss and cannot carry a simple conversation. I have gained 30plds. My Doctor now has diagnosed me fibromalgia and osteo arthritis due to the trauma of my cancer treatments. He continually shrugs it off that its not due to the Lyrica. I know that is what has caused all of these ailments. It has altered my whole life. I will be my own advocate from here on. Please let me know what you think! ## It is not normal for the Lyrica to cause such i...

following exterrnal beam radiation, and seed implant, how long can or should a patient continue the eligard injections? are there benefits for continued use? I am currently receiving a 45 mg dose, every 6 months. ## It has been shown that continued therapeutic doses will continue to inhibit the gonadatropin secretion. Learn more Leuprolide details here. As to how long you need to continue, that is something you should discuss with your doctor, I really don't have any specific information on that. Have they said anything about it?

Thanks ## Hello, LIDsuffere! How are you? Which dosage? Some of them do contain it and some don't. I'll gladly check for you, if you can post back with this additional information. Thank you! My Mother has lung cancer. She is taking radiation and Chemo carbo taxol. The Chemo Doctor said do not take Vitamin C with this drug as it will weaken the effectiveness. Is this true? I am a 25 yr breast cancer survivor. A nutritionist at the MD Anderson Clinic in Houston told me to take mega doses of Vit. C while going through my one year of Chemo. I did. I am alive today and I believe the Vit. C helped me. Is there some research on vitamin C and the chemicals given for cancer cure? Thank you!

I was diagnosed with Prostate cancer in 2001. I had radiation treatment 4 years later. Last summer my psa begin to rise rapidly. I was put on casodex & then 3 weeks later I had a lupron shot. I have not had a shot since & I continue to take 50 mg of casodex daily. My psa has stayed down for 4 months. My next blood test is April 7. Is it a bad idea to just stay on Casodex? I had hot flashes when I had the Lupron shot. I am not having hot flashes when only on Casodex. If my psa does not go up, I would like to just stay on Casodex. If my psa begins to rise I believe my Doctor plans to give me another Lupron shot. Does this seem like a good possible approach to my situation?

A Viadur implant was placed in my arm after having radiation treatments for prostate cancer. After one year the Viadur implant was replaced by another one. After one more year I was told that I would not need a Viadur replacement and that I could just leave the Viadur implant in place. I was experiencing heat flashes throughtout the time the Viadur implants were in place. Then one day I had intense pain in the left side of my head like an electrical shock. After several CAT scans and two MRIs it was determined that there was a tumor at the pituitary gland. I insisted that the Viadur implant be removed. I have gone through radiation treatments for this pituitary tumor and currently the tumor is no longer enlarging. And I no longer have heat flashes. Do I need to be concerned that by leav...

I got Cancer of the EPIGLOTTIS, getting treatment with Radiation. New Oxy 30 MG swells up like a sponge making it harder to swallow which make it hang up in the tumor just in front of the voice box, base of tongue. Just when you think you swallowed it with water you cough it out an hour later twice the size it went in. Without knowing it you might cough it up on the street, garbage or toilet. This kind of cancer makes you spit & cough. Told the doctor about it, lost about a half dozen of them coughing them up. Now use a hanky to spit into out come the oxy looking like a baby marshmellow. How sick can the brains of these people be who thought this up? Treat people like s***. I have no other problem with other pill I have to take. The whole damn system is wrong. The DEA is now the Ges...

I just started Tamoxifen 10 days ago after lumpectomy and radiation for ER+. Breast cancer. Clear margins, sentinel node negative. My oncologist recommended radiation and IV chemo for one year. I agreed to radiation, refused chemo. Arimidex recommended, I agreed and started taking as soon as I finished 6 weeks of radiation. I was unable to tolerate the joint pain and bone aches, and the very frequent and severe hot flashes so I stopped Arimidex after 3 months. That was 3 years ago. At my last oncology visit, my doctor recommended I start Tamoxifen just to be safe, as I have no signs or symptoms of recurrence. I reluctantly agreed to give it a try and started it 10 days ago. The amazing thing about starting tamoxifen is that my almost daily migraines have suddenly stopped. I have had sev...

my husband suffered after radiation from collitis. He got rafassal caplets for 5 months and later on prednison(60mg aday during alittle over 3 weeks.)All of a sudden he developed being lame;can't move his legs and body anymore.can't stand up ! Is this a known interreaction from those medications? He uses many other medications as well but already for a much longer time with no side effects. In a short time it is as if the mucles faded away after he got oedemia, which also disappeared. He has a heart problem(pace maker and defribilator since 2004). ## Prednisone is a bad drug, and probably caused the paralysis. It sure gave me an ugly bouquet of problems. My psoriasis flared in new places- it was only my legs, now my neck and shoulders. I caught a cold by day 3 on a 20mg dose. My fa...

Is megestrol used to control hot flashes in men who have had prostate cancer radiation and harmone therapy? ## I did come across a study done on "Megestrol acetate for the prevention of hot flashes"; which you can view by following the link below: ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/8028614 It seems as though it would be pretty effective, as the study mentioned that hot flashes were reduced by 85% after four weeks on megestrol. The degree of efficacy was also noted to be similar in men and women. On a side note: Megestrol is a man-made version of the human hormone progesterone, and is commonly used by cancer patients, so I do believe that it is an option for those who have had prostate cancer radiation and hormone therapy. I hope this information helps to answer your question!

After taking Oxycontin for 2 years, to lessen pain from chemo, radiation therapy & liver therapy during and after the strong medications. I was very happy to get the pain relief from the Oxycontin. Aftereffects problem with tooth decay and loss. I now receive Social Security Disability so I do not have a lot of money for dental care. Do you offer any programs to help people with dental problems from using Oxycontin? Thank you. ## Unfortunately no, there aren't any programs for such things. However, the Oxycodone can cause such issues for several reasons. The first is usually due to the fact that it causes dry mouth, which means that your saliva isn't rinsing away the bacteria on your teeth, in the manner that it usually does. The second is due to the fact that it can also ca...

My 63y/o mother survived chemo and radiation for throat cancer but was unable to stop the morphine 15mg twice a day without horrible withdrawal symptoms. Her MD put her on Suboxone 8mg/2mg once a day in June. She even took half the strip on most days and the doctor was very pleased and anticipated that she would be able to stop altogether in November. She unfortunately had a stroke 14 days ago and has been in the hospital. The first 7 days she was confused from the stroke but now she is weak and forgetful but is no longer disoriented. She told me tonight that she thought she needed her Suboxone. She said she thought she was going thru withdrawal. I was floored. She is not having any outward signs of withdrawal: no back/stomach pain, no nausea/vomiting, no sweating or tremors. Isn't ...

Is this normal? I am having side effects from radiation and the ER doctor prescribed bentyl but now I have diarrhea. Is this normal? It's not listed as a common side effect. ## Same thing happened to me. ## Even though diarrhea is not listed as a side effect of Bentyl (Dicyclomine), it becomes obvious to me that this medication is the cause of it. Had you not taken Bentyl at all, it most-likely would've never occurred in the first place, unless you ate something that triggered these constant bowel movements. The side effect list of Bentyl seems to list every gastrointestinal side effect under the sun, except diarrhea (including constipation, stomach pain, vomiting, loss of appetite and gas or bloating): ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmedhealth/PMH0000810/#a684007-sideEffects Have you discu...

My mother was given a fentanyl patch (25mg/hr) after receiving radiation treatment for a cancerous tumour in her spine. When I discovered what a strong drug it was and that she was experiencing vertigo, I removed it immediately. I took this decision myself as I was unable to reach her doctor. She had worn the patch for just 36 hours. She had a peaceful night but has been shivering this morning. Could 36 hours of wearing a fentanyl patch be enough to give withdrawal symptoms? Is it okay for the withdrawal symptoms to die out on their own? I am still unable to reach her doctor. That is why I am posting these questions. I would be grateful for any advice. ## It is a very potent medication, over 80 times stronger than Morphine. However, I think taking it upon yourself to remove it may not h...
