I just got poison ivy on my ankle. Will amoxicilin help that? ## No, amoxicillin is an antiboitic and is used for infections. You need something like benadryl or calamine lotion. Something to help with the itch and allergic reaction. ## Your best bet, if this is the first time you have caught it, is to see your doctor for an evaluation. The medication you can use for it, will be based on the severity or your reaction to it. You should never try to self treat or self diagnose. ## I once had a reaction to a mosqito bite and the doctor prescribed benadryl to me so I think that would be your best bet. but I'm not sure. you should talk to your doctor ## Please give me right poison name i can understand to right poison name

Can a heart patient take Benadryl for poison ivy iching and burning?..I am unable to sleep with the iching. Can you tell me what to take?. ## Ask your doctor about Chlobetasol Proprianate. It was originally an excema cream. I swear by it. I can stand outside and if the wind blows on poison ivy, I get it. If you can use cortisone cream, you should be able to use this. It is the only thing that works for me. ## Hello, Brad! How are you doing? My cardiologist approved of my taking Benadryl, when needed, however, it can also depend on what other medications you are taking, so it is always best to check with your doctor, first. However, if you post back with the names of your other medications, I can also check for interactions for you. The FDA lists the typical side effects of Benadryl as p...

I would like to know the name of all the meds that work to treat poison ivy. Will cephalexin 500 mg or ciprofloxacin 500 mg work? ## No, these are antibiotics that are used to treat bacterial infections. The FDA lists the typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, and non-allergic skin rash. Poison ivy is actually an allergic reaction, so you may need a steroid to treat it, as well as an antihistamine, according to FDA reports. How are you doing, now? Has there been any change?

I have had a reaction to poison ivy going on 3 weeks now. My face has been swelling and I really can't stop itching. I have had a cortisone shot, took prednisone, then they gave me a methylprednisolone dose pack.. I wonder if I need azithromycin? ## That is an antibiotic, so it is not going to do anything to help with an allergic reaction, it will only help treat, or prevent infections. The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, non-allergic skin rash, and diarrhea. Have you tried consulting a dermatologist? That really sounds like a severe allergic reaction.

Supposed to take 6 tabs in 24 hours first day But I took 4 tabs already in 6 hours Should I be worried ? ## Hello, Liz! How are you doing? No, they can be split into separate doses or taken altogether. However, taken so many very close together might increase the nausea and dizziness that can be side effects. You may also experience fluid retention, rapid heart rate and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with?

My Dad, who had a PhD in Chemistry, used to use a brownish solution on me whenever I contracted poison ivy. I don't know exactly what it was, but he mixed (and stored) it in a semi-clear poly bottle and he had marked it (as best I can recall) FeS04. In addition to the iron odor, it seemed to have an alcohol odor as well. Whatever it was it was exceptionally effective at drying up and eliminating the rash from poison ivy. It left a noticeable yellow-brown stain on the skin, but it was easily washed off after treatment. Don't know if this was an old "Chem lab" cure, a home remedy, or what. Sure would like to know though. Can anyone help? ## FeSO4 is just the chemical formula for Iron(II) Sulfate, it sounds like he may just have been mixing it with alcohol. Have you tried a...

White, round pill. 54 879 imprint on one side and a line on other side. I have had prescription pain meds for years, I know what bitter is, but this one had a taste so bad I spit it out immediately and it burned slightly. The taste stayed for about fifteen minutes. It also made my other pills smell really bad like a poison bad smell. . It was like nothing I ever smelled or tasted before. I had it in my mouth about 2 seconds, no water and out it came and the imprint was gone it seemed very fragile and abnormally thick. So is it Fake? Poison? Or is that how they taste I have never had one before. ## Hello, Ivy! How are you? I am very sorry about the symptoms you experienced. No pill should be held in your mouth for any length of time, they are intended to be swallowed immediately with a f...

Can I use this for poison ivy? My daughter has it prescribed for her excrma. I am desperate with all the itchy from the poison ivy. Is it safe to use? Will it work? ## Hello, Gert! How are you? If it is prescribed for you daughter, you shouldn't use. You should see your doctor to get something prescribed for you. Betamethasone is a steroid and while it can help with allergic reactions, such as poison ivy, it could also make some skin conditions worse, so if you don't actually have poison ivy, you could be putting yourself at risk. You also don't need to antibiotic that it contains, that won't do anything for an allergic reaction. Typical side effects, as listed by the FDA, are usually related to its topical use and may include skin irritation, redness, burning, discolora...

I was given this by my dermatologist for poison ivy. So far it is not working. OTC anti-itch is helping. ## How long have you been using it? It is a steroid based cream, so it won't work instantly like some of the other topical ointments do. It will require a few days to start having an effect. Learn more Triamcinolone details here. However, many times, poison ivy will just clear up on its own, as long as you are careful not to scratch and dig at, so it spreads.

I am taking a low dose of pretizone for poison ivy. I have two days left on pretizone. I take norvasc and a diuretic for hypertension. Can I have a glass of wine while on these meds? ## Hello, Nanny! How are you? It is never a good idea to mix alcohol with prescription medications. It can worsen the side effects of them, which may make one drink affect you as if you'd had 2 and so on. Additionally, alcohol can be cardiotoxic, so it may not be safe for you drink. Is there anything else I can help with? ## Your answer was helpful. My poison ivy is disappearing and your answer is the one I expected. Thanks for responding.

Hi. I finished a 6 day cycle for poison ivy. The pi is drying up, however I now have hives all along my hip and an itchy rash across abdomen. Could this be a reaction from the meds? At first I thought it was more PI coming out-but looks more like hives and it had been almost 2 weeks since exposure. Thanks. ## Hives can be symptoms of an allergic reaction, as reported by the FDA. Other symptoms may include swollen glands, trouble breathing, and throat/facial swelling. It would be a good idea to inform your doctor to have this checked out, because if you are allergic, you will need to avoid this medication in the future, because such allergic reactions tend to worsen with repeated exposure, there are several NIH articles that you can read that discuss this. Is there anything else I can he...

Friend gave it to me to use for my son's poison ivy does it work? ## Betamethasone dipropionate cream is a topical corticosteroid that is commonly used for treating allergic reactions to poison ivy and other similar plants. It works by depressing the formation, release, and activity of different cells and chemicals that cause swelling, redness, and itching. I suppose it might work differently for everyone, but in the event that it doesn't work as well as intended, you may want to consider some natural options. I ended up finding several types of natural poison ivy treatments on Google, if you're open to any suggestions?

I was prescribed methylprednisolone for a reaction to poison ivy and have finished day 4 of the pack. I feel as if I have little to no relief. I am in constant discomfort (having a tough time sleeping even) and the rashes do not appear to be going away. One in fact seems to be getting worse. ## Hello, Diane! How are you? You'll need to finish the pack and then you'll likely start to see some improvement. If not, then you should consult your doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this mediation as possibly including nausea, dizziness, nervousness, anxiety and insomnia. Is there anything else I can help with?

I finished taking the methylprednisolone pack Saturday a poison ivy reaction and have had unbearable itchy skin around my neck and face. Is this a common withdrawal symptom? ## Hello, Cristi! How are you? No, if you developed hives, you may be having an allergic reaction to it and should consult your doctor. The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, insomnia, acne and fluid retention. Is there anything else I can help with? ## No, that's it. Thanks so much for getting back to me.

I was admitted in the hospital for 4 days, due to a severe reaction to poison ivy. Both of my legs were really swollen, red, painful, & hot to the touch. The doctors ran a complete CBC blood count & it was confirmed that my white blood count was high, my potassium was low, & that I also have an immune difficiency. They treated me with intravenous antibiotics & Methylprednisolone for 4 days. My swelling, redness, & pain did subside however, I am uncertain as to whether my progress was because of the antibiotics or Methylprednisolone. I was discharged after the fourth day & prior to being released, I did inform my doctor & nurses that my entire family at home was sick with the flu. I woke the very next morning with a bad cold that turned into the flu which also...

I was prescribed hydroxyzine for itching with a bad case of poison ivy. I found that helped with my mild anxiety. Is there anything similar over the counter that I can purchase for the anxiety? Thanks! ## Hello, Hearher! How are you? Unfortunately no, there is nothing as potent available over the counter. Have you tried anything else to treat the anxiety? There are quite a few non-habit forming options that your doctor can prescribe, such as Prozac. The FDA classifies it as an SSRI antidepressant and its typical side effects may possibly include nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth and weight loss. ## Hi. Have you tried essential oils for anxiety? I had it really bad but now I am in control with DoTERRA.

My daughter was prescribed 4mg Methylprednisolone (6 day) for her poison ivy. She is on her third day and experiencing chest pain and neck pain. Are these symptoms cause for alarm? ## Hello, Laura! How is your daughter doing? The FDA classifies this medication as a steroid, so it can cause some crazy side effects. She may also experience headache, dry mouth, dizziness, acne and fluid retention. However, since she's having chest pain, it would be best to have things checked out by her doctor to be sure. Is there anything else I can help with?

My doctor just prescribed two drugs for two different conditions, prednisone for severe poison ivy and ciprofloxacn for a urinary infection. After doing a bit of research, it is my understanding that prednisone should not be taken when there is an infection. Should I take them both? (Prednisone dosage: 5mg each tablet; 10 tablets daily for 2 days, reducing to 9/2days; 8/2days; 6/2days; 4/2days; 2/2days; 1/2days. Cipro dosage: 500 mg; 1 tablet twice daily for 14 days) ## You shouldn't take it if you have an active fungal infection that you are taking oral medications for, and it can make it easier for you to develop an infection, but it is fine to take if you're doctor has prescribed it for you, and is monitoring your condition regularly. I woke up 3 nights ago with both arms covered by what appeared to be mosquito bites. I was mystified, nut thought it might be poison ivy. The next morning, I called my BCBS hotline, who identified this an allergic reaction. I called my doctor, who took me off of lisinopril and wnats me to try taking nothing for a week, then start 2.5 mg amlodipine if necessary. I have minor rash (itchy) on my legs every morning. How long will this continue? I stopped taking fish oil, a recent addition, in case this was the culprit. I also got a severe rash from hyzaar blood pressure medecine. I have also been taking very low doses of xanax for a year now. ## Unfortunately, allergic reactions are always possible, and if you've had a reaction already to a medication, in the past, there is a good chance...
