I've been on 150mg methadone for the last 10 yrs or so. NOW bc of new federal REGS, they have me on 30 mg methadone per day plus two 10mg oxymoron for breakthrough pain. Can someone suggest a medicine that might work around the clock and meet federal mme limits? Thank you so much... In pain in Alabama.... HELP IS APPRECIATED! ## Hello, Ferrell! How are you? One possible option you could discuss with your doctor is the Fentanyl patch, they are time released and usually last from 48 to 71 hours, it is an opiate that is over 80 times stronger than Morphine. The FDA classifies it as narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Does anyone else have any ideas or suggestions? ...

I am currently on 10 mg of methadone 16 times a day. I have to have something for my backpain but cannot deal with the side effects of methadone anymore. What would be a replacement drug that would be as effective? ## Hi Sara, Sorry to hear that your pain medication isn't working as well as you'd like it to. Some of these side effects can be pretty horrible, so I don't blame anyone for trying to find an alternative. A few suggestions I can give you for other prescription pain medications include: Demerol, Morphine, Vicodin (extended release), Percocet, Dilaudid, Opana, Oxycodone, and Fentanyl. Your doctor would have a better clue as to which one of these would best replace the drug you're currently on, but honestly, there's no way of telling ahead of time how you...

I have been on 50 mg of methadone tid for a 3 months after 2 years years on 40mgs tid. I am also on 2-3 30 mg oxycodone for breakthrough and 100mg ms contin bid. I have reached this stage due to tolerance after 8 years of use for 9+ pain due L3, L4, and 3 cervical herniations, and spinal stenosis. I am also on 1mg of clorazepam tid. I am not getting relief from the methadone and the Pain Doctor wants to look to lessen my methadone due to QT cardiac delays. My doctor is open to reasoned regimen and that is what I need. I will see him next Wed. so I am in a hurry. Thanks in advance. ## Well, you should be aware that regardless of what you try to replace it with, you are likely to still experience some problems, if you stop the Methadone. It is very difficult to stop and, even with a slow ...

Wife hospitalized w/QTc; prolonged interval between heart beats. Norm is 450-500. Hers;700. Was on 140 mgs methadone. Next day down to 80, next day and currently 40 mgs. Now heart at 465. Given 60 mgs. morphine er for every 20 mgs taken away. Will keep her at 40 mgs methadone and 300 mgs morphine. Anyone help me with this please?? ## Oh my, Nickynub It appears from what you have shared your wife has Methadone Cardiotoxicity, which causes the electrical pathways of the heart to slow down (sometimes HR less than 40). Ekg showing prolonged QRS. Most likely she is going through withdrawls as well. Not knowing all the need details I would suggest calling a conference with all MD's involved to discuss treatment plan. Discuss possible outcomes. Make direct contact with cardiologist. ASAP #...

Hi I suffered a complete L1/L2 Spinal Cord Injury a few years ago and due to the nerve damage I now suffer ongoing chronic pain in my lower groin and acute pain in my legs. I currently take 10mg Oxycodone five times a day with 10mg Methadone once a day for the pain and it has worked very well for me since the accident. I started on just 10mg Oxycodone four times a day with no Methadone and over nearly 5 years it has build up to what I'm now on. Me and my pain Dr always agreed to rotate my pain meds before any one does got too high, so we are now replacing the Oxycodone. I tried Dilaudid (Hydromorphone) for one day and it did very little for my pain apart from making me tired,so I have returned to the Oxycodone. My question to anyone who can help is what do you think is a good replac...

I am currently taking oxycontin 40 mg and I going from a private insurance plan to a Humana PPO Medicare advantage plan and they don't cover it. Some of the other option they recommend from humana was Methadone, Hydromorphone, Codeine Sulfate, Fentanyal Patch, Morphine, and oxycodone IR. I know Oxycodone is the same active ingredient oxycontin but I also take Oxycodone 15mg for breakthrough pain. It helps somewhat but it does help enough. My good day after taking the medicine and having my spinal cord stimulation implant device on is a 5 but an avg. day is 7.5. To give you a idea what a five to me is I broke both of my arms with one bone poking through was a 5.5 and that is a good day for me. My doctor is very hard to get him to increase my dose. So maybe one of these other medicati...

Has federal funding for methadone decreased since the "opiodemic"? I started taking opiates in 1992 because of extreme pain in my hip which I had suffered with since 1979. The medical profession gave me NSAID's and a small script for Tylenol-3. I have since had 2 hip replacements. I am 59 yrs old. I was on and off methadone for years and have been on it steady for 10 years and stayed clean. During this time I have gone from paying $0 to what will start next month at $360.00/mo. ## Manufacturers are free to set their own prices in the U.S. according to supply and demand. Thus, it really has nothing to do with federal regulations, but more to do with market competition and capitalism. Does anyone know anything I can take OTC that works in the way trazadone 50 mg does? Ambien never helped and all the other Rx for sleep....I do also know this is an antidepressant. I just kicked methadone after some years so my Rx ran out early. Haven't been sleeping at all...thanks ?? ## Unfortunately, no there isn't an OTC medication that will work like it does, that's why they are OTC and these others require prescriptions. The FDA warns that most of these carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, mood changes, and sedation. There are some medications available OTC to help with insomnia, have you tried any of them? Are you on any other medications? ## Verwon- Thanks for your reply melatonin does not work for m...

I'm having surgery for knee replacement and this is the first time I've had surgery and general anaesthetic while on methadone. Can anyone advise me about the safety of this and how they will treat post-operative pain? ## I have had two surgerys while on methadone, you will be fine they gave me percocet for pain and it took the edge off which is what it should do, alot of people think they should be pain free after a surgrey while taking pain pills but that is not the case hope all goes well ## Hello. If you are on methadone maintenance for opiate addiction, you will need to tell the surgon so he/she knows how to treat your pain and your general sedation. Methadone won't help your post op pain, so he/she will have to prescribe another type of painkiller. One of the reasons i...

Hi. I suffered a L1/L2 complete SCI injury some 4 years ago. After 6-7 weeks when the spinal shock wore off I noticed I had a burning pain in my lower groin area even though I can't really feel much below my hips, we thought maybe it was a UTI but all showed negative. It was diagnosed as chronic nerve pain and it never goes away, I get acute nerve pains in my legs on top of this chronic pain. I have been taking 10mg Oxycodone four to five times per day and methadone 10mg once a day for the chronic pain + 800mg Gabapentin three times a day for the burning in my legs. The only way I have been able to keep my doses so low over the years is by being very hard on myself as to when to take the pain meds but as hard as I have tried I'm now going up to around 60mg total Oxycodone per da...

After 15 years I was kicked off 200 mgs of methadone daily because the pain doc wasn't "comfortable" with it all of a sudden, but he is perfectly willing to let me drop dead suffering like a dog in front of my family at age 60, two hip replacements and severe osteoporosis. Sure enough the first day I went into a massive withdrawal and wound up with a dislocated hip on top of it at the ER. I wrote a complaint to the NY health dept and got a nasty letter saying the doctor can do whatever he wants as long as he provides emergency care. That can just be one more small prescription of Vicodin. Medicine shouldn't allow for such cruelty. ## I think there is a lot of talk about overdoses. I believe there is an undiscussed tragedy and that is of pain patients being discharged fr ...

Is there a generic or alternative to methadone 5 mg? What options do I have for motin 800 as I had heart surgery and am now on Lasix and warfin and can no longer take motrin? I need something for inflammation! Thanks in advance. ## Hello, Ellie! How are you doing? Methadone is the generic, but there are other opiate narcotics available. The FDA does warn that they carry the risk of being habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, headache, dry mouth, and constipation. As to a replacement for the Motrin, you may be able to take a steroid, but only your doctor can decide what's safe for you. How long ago did you have the surgery? What other medications are you taking?

I have been seeing a doc for 4 yrs for pain management who put me on 100 mg. Methadone. He left his practice and his replacement won't prescribe methadone. I have called multiple pain management docs who will not take me at this mg level. I have tried everything else before and need a LAS VEGAS area doc who will see me soon. ## In a way, you may be creating your own problem here. If you are calling other doctors and asking if they will prescribe Methadone at your current dosage level, then just about all of them are going to say no. The reason for this is due to the fact that doing so is considered drug seeking behavior and doctors are warned to avoid taking on such patients. The best thing you can do is to make an appointment with a new doctor for a consultation and make sure that ...

i have been in the same pain management office for about 10 years. i had experimental back surgury in 2005. i had a titanium disc replacement in my lumber spine at l5-s1. since then the pain has gotten a lot worse. my pain management doctor tried me on a few different pain meds, but i decided percocet 5 3 times a day was sufficient. over time, my body built up a tolerance and i continued to get procedures there to help with the pain, but i kept telling my doctor i was still in excruciating pain. unfortunately, i couldn't handle the pain anymore and my boyfriend at the time started doing dope and convinced meta try it too. thank god it was only for a few months, that was over a year ago. i went back into my pain management center to get help and they put me on suboxone. i hate myself ...
