Potassium is a chemical element with symbolK (from Neo-Latin kalium) and atomic number19. Elemental potassium is a soft silvery-white alkali metal that oxidizes rapidly in air and is very reactive with water, generating sufficient heat to ignite the hydrogen emitted in the reaction and burning with a lilac flame. Because potassium and sodium are chemically very similar, their salts were not at first differentiated. The existence of multiple elements in their salts was suspected from 1702,[1] ...

whats a danger level for potassium ## Normal potassium levels are between 3.5 and 5.0 mEq/L. anything over 5.0 is considered Hyperkalemia and while something such as 5.1 or 5.2 isn't considered extremely dangerous, it is important to get to the root of what is causing the problem, so it doesn't get any worse. Elevated levels of potassium can cause abnormal hearth rhythms, which can result in heart attack and be fatal. Any time you have an elevated level, even a slight one, your doctor should discuss it with you and try to get to the root of what is causing the problem, such as another health problem, something you are eating, a supplement or another medication you may be taking. If it is reaching dangerous levels, there are often symptoms that give it away, such as fatigue, hear...

Atere 3 months of Multaq, I began to run dangerously high potassium levels, not low! Any other similar experiences? ## It doesn't appear to be a very common occurrence, but a search I did turned up reports from 13 other people that have experienced hyperkalemia while taking Multaq. What did your doctor advise you to do? ## I started multaq Jan 2013, and started having high potassium levels a month later. I'm still on multaq and still have high potassium levels. Hoping to be able to get off the multaq soon. Had a catheter ablation in August 2013. ## Jimmy, I'm in a situation here, I used to take cymgen(symbalta) for a year and half. Though im off it now, i started tapering off in October last year and stop taking it altogether in January this year. My potassium is still low, ...

I have taken amlodipine and lisinopril for a few years. I recently got a staff infection and my Dr prescribed bactrim. I have heard not to take bactrim with lisinopril. Is this true? ## Hello Sally, You are absolutely right! Lisinopril has been reported to have a negative interraction with trimethoprim (Bactrim). These medications used together may increase the potassium levels in your blood which in turn can develop into Hyperkalemia. In severe cases this can lead to kidney failure, muscle pralysis, irregular heart rhythm and cardiac arrest. You are more likely to develop hyperkalemia if you are elderly, dehydrated, have a kidney disease, diabetes or if you are receiving Bactrim for long periods of time. Reportedly it is important that you maintain adequate fluid intake during the time...

What is not allowed while taking lisinopril; food, drugs or drinks. ## Lisinopril is an ACE inhibitor, that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure. If you are being treated for high blood pressure, you should be informed to avoid food or beverage products that contain real licorice or licorice extract, since it can raise blood pressure. The only food/beverage interaction is that you should watch out for items that contain very high levels of potassium. Getting to much potassium, while taking Lisinopril can lead to Hyperkalemia, which can be a dangerous condition. Common side effects may include: nausea, drowsiness, headache and stomach pain. Can I take these two with cozaar. Do they have serious side effects? ## Hi Susan, Based on my research there are no drug interactions found between any of the three medications you mentioned. This does not necessarily mean no interactions exist, but my sources state that every effort has been made to ensure that the information provided is accurate. There are however food related interactions with Cozaar. Information that I've gathered states the following: "GENERALLY AVOID: Moderate-to-high dietary intake of potassium, especially salt substitutes, may increase the risk of hyperkalemia in some patients who are using angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs). ARBs can promote hyperkalemia through inhibition of angiotensin II-induced aldosterone secretion. Patients with diabetes, he...

I want to know the side effects of chlorthalid. will it effect my gums, and make my teeth loose ## Chlorthalidone is a diuretic that is most commonly used to treat high blood pressure and edema. It really isn't known to cause those effects, however, since it does remove fluid from the body, you will be dryer and this can include your mouth. If you produce less saliva, it can allow bacteria to stay in the mouth longer than usual, which could cause dental damage. That is something that you should be careful of, when taking it. You will need to make sure that you take in enough fluids in a day to prevent dehydration and such problems. Other side effects may include: nausea, dizziness and hyperkalemia. Learn more: Are there any other questions?

Been on Ramipril 2.5mg for eight years or more and new Dr.changed them to 5mg.I have recently had a blood test to check kidney function/liver,etc and had a call from Dr.to say my potassium levels were high....is this due to the increase in strength of the Ramipril? The medication was increased to bring my blood pressure down to a more acceptable level. ## Hello, Sheik! How are you? I'm very sorry about the problem you're having. Yes, Ramipril has been known to cause elevated potassium levels, as a side effect. As listed by the FDA, you may also experience nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension. It may be best to switch to a different medication, depending on how high your level is, since hyperkalemia can be dangerous. Is there anything else I can help w...
