I got an inj. of morphine in my leg yesterday, as I suffer from chronic back pain. My dr gave me the inj. around 12:40pm yesterday after lunch, and I'm wondering how long it lasts, as it did help, and this morning I was a bit spaced out. So is that inj. still working to control the pain? ## Hello, Tweeter! How are you? Generally, it only last a few hours, but the side effects may linger longer, which could explain why you were feeling spaced out. The FDA classifies this medication as a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Is there anything else I can help with? ## My son was given a shot of morphine at the ER and I was wondering how long I need to wait to give hi...

HOW LONG DOES ONE 60MG EXTENDED RELEASE TABLET TAKE BEFORE IT'S RELEASED INTO YOUR SYSTEM? ## I take 15's and I find I get more pain relief if I take them early and go back to bed, then get up at 9 pretty much pain free. I take 2. 15's at 6 am and go back to sleep, I have pain relief all day, the pain starts coming back near 8 pm. ## As to how long it takes to start being released into your body to start working, it's roughly 15 to 20 minutes, or so. I've been prescribed an extended-release version of morphine sulfate and I've released I'm not sure how the extended release works. I take one 15 mg pill per day. I guess I thought the extended release meant that I would be getting the benefit of 15 mg of pain relief all day long, at an given moment. But does the ER version simply take that 15 mg and divide it up over the space of 24 hours? 15 divided by 24...that would mean at any given hour, I'd only have 0.62 (less than a milligram) in my system, which is substantially less than 15 mg of relief in any given hour. Can anyone clarify this for me? ## Hello, Groa! How are you? Yes, the tablet contains 15mgs total of Morphine that is slowly released over time. However, generally, the constant release of even small amounts ...

Recently the doctor prescribed morphine 15mg ER which was too strong and made me so incredibly sick. I've tried everything else on the marked, but those made me "deathly ill" as well. He then changed me to 15mg Morphine IR 4 times a day, and it usually always lasts about 4 hours until the burning pain in my back returns. Yesterday I only took one tab, and was fine all day, but this morning the burning pain is back with a vengence! Will I get better constant pain relief taking 4 a day whether I feel I need them or not? I simply just need a new spine, but that isn't possible of course and trying to figure out if morphine IR is cumulative in the body, and therefore I should take the 4 a day whether I feel I need it or not. Thanks! ## Yes, while they do have some immediate e...

kidney stones ## For anyone else seeking such information, the preferred medication in most hospitals for IV pain relief now is Dilaudid, which contains the active ingredient Hydromorphone. It is very potent and can be habit forming, it may also cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. Learn more Dilaudid details here. I have been taking 4 or 5 of the 15mg ir morphine pills per day for several months. I was having a lot of pain today, so I took another dose of 15mg ir pills about an hour ago. How long before I will have some relief and how long will it last? ## I just read your post...did not see any replies, so here goes. First of all, you need to stay on top of your pain. Do NOT try to wait until it gets really severe for if you do, you will 'never' get it under control. 'Never being relative to how much you can stand, and when the edge is off enough for you to 'have a life'', so to speak. Take your meds on the first sign of break through pains, or spikes. Now, to answer the question you actually asked- normally, it takes between 20 to 45 minutes for pain medicines by mouth t...

I just learned that a friends, yes seriously a friend, has for the last nine days taken a half of a 15mg extended relief morphine every day and was planning to intermittently take a whole one to hopefully avoid withdrawal. My friend is doing this because my friend is going on vacation and his prescription becomes due during the time he is away. Our state has instituted "drug contracts" with the prescribing doctor and pharmacy for people using these types of drugs. This means he can not have it filled early to take with him, and his doctors office has rules about calling for the script 48 hours maximum before it is due. He was only trying to make it last so he would not be in as much pain and not go through withdrawal. I was concerned because I know you are not supposed to cut an...

I have morphine pills that I want to take for a kidney stone (I get them frequently, so I know that it is a kidney stone), but the bottle that I found today (yes I know I need a new prescription), is dated Feb/05. I do not know if it would be safe to take these, and I do not know who to ask, since it is the Canada Day Holiday, and these pills are over 6 years old, as it is currently July/11. ## To clarify...I ordinarily do have a current prescription, but I forgot to ask the last time I was in at my pain specialist, just a week ago. As a result I went searching for relief and came across an old bottle. Also, I did end up taking the pills, and I unfortunately started throwing up about an half hour afterwards. And the pills did not seem to relieve the pain, but that might be because it di...

How long does ER 60 mg morphine give pain relief per dose? ## Hi, Jane! How are you? These are designed to slowly release the medication over a period of 12 hours, so they are normally prescribed to be taken twice daily. However, some people do find that they don't get as much pain relief after about 10 hours, or so. Learn more MS Contin details here. This is a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation. ## how often should you take 60mg morphine tablets? Its been at least eleven hours so is it OK to take another one? ## I take 1 60mg @ 5am and again at 4-5pm of Morphine Sulfate ER. They don't last 12 hrs for me and I also take Norco. 10/325 1-2 every 7hrs. Those ar...

Does anyone take Kadian? How is it? How long does it last? It is not very strong to me. ## In response to the question about Kadian, I have taken it in a dosage of 12 to 20 100mg capsules per day. It is basically morphine sulfate, and the thing I do like about it is that it kills the pain more in the body as opposed to the brain, so you feel more normal. The down side is that is makes you sleepy sometimes, causes more constipation than Oxy, or Feninyl, and has a ceiling around 2 grams/day, in other words beyond that amount there is no additional relief when taking more of the med. Overall, I have found that I can take it once a day along with 4 30mg Oxycondone IR in the morning and two to four 10mg Valiums at bed time. That way I wake up in some pain, but can go to the bathroom, and the...

sorry for the last post,,, this is the spell checked vervion. Ken. I am a 52 year old male, I recently shattered the lower part of my right tibia, it required that a long l shaped plate be attached to hold the pieces in place, after surgery I was given 2mg if IV morphine, which didnt seem to help much, the pain was very severe, when I ask for more main med I was told that if I was given any more I would stop breathing and I was refused any further relief, have I became a sissy or was the dose way insufficient, additionally when I was sent home (after 2 days) I was given 10mg lortabs to be taken1 every 8 hours that dont seem right either, is it? ## There is really no way to say what is the right, or wrong dose for any specific person. Many questions here seem to be about comparing one opioid to another. Your questions need to be about either relief of not and that taking say Oxycodone 15mg is effectively treating pain. Pain from one to another is subjective at best. Morphine is engineered for lasting longer than Oxycodone IR, immediate release. Therefore at first Oxycodone works well but doesn't last, requiring another dose then morphine or Oxycontin may work better lasting through a period of time. Oxycodone really is a breakthrough pain medication. Treatment using Oxycodone for longterm pain treatment is tricky and may take months or years to get right. It took 3 years and 3 different pain management plans to find something that works fairly well. The other issue is insurance, wheres Oxycontin is a name brand tier

i have been taking 50mg of hyrdocodone per day for the last 6 months and it is not working for the pain anymore. I have ankolying spondylitus. My Dr has put me on 15mg morphine extended release 2x per day. I took 15mg about 3 hours ago and so far not relief. My questions is will this work for me as I was taking 50mg of hyrocodone per day. ## How are you doing, now? Has there been any change? The ER Morphine is released slowly, over a period of 12 hours, it is not released all at once, like the Hydrocodone was, so you will not feel the same effect. There is also a change that this dosage isn't high enough for you. Have you informed your doctor of the issue? Though, it is usually best to give it a week, or so, to see if things improve. The FDA warns that these medications carry the ri...

Ive taken small doses of opiods before, and one 15mg abg, but not on a regular basis. I was just wondering how long tye effects will last, amd when it is safe to drink. And what are warning signs I should look out for? I think im going to be ok though. ## IThe drug is morphine sulfate extended-release, generic for MS Contin 15 mg tablets. It is odd you would be prescribed an extended-release medication if you are only taking it occasionally. MS Contin (and its generics) are used for people requiring continuous pain relief and is taken every 12 hrs. MS Contin Extended Release lasts 12 hrs so that xx mg does of morphine is being slowly released rather than the full dose working immediately (but lasting only 4-6 hrs). MS Contin is NOT intended to be taken as needed so it may be a large enou...

QI am looking for a good mild/moderate narcotic for break through pain . I am allready on hydro/norco 10/325 and it only las about 3-4 hours and thenn wears off. Any sugestions. Three bad dis in neck and fibromyagia with severe migranies i think being put out of me out misery would be better lol. ## Hi vonda, Based on your description, I get the sense that you may want to ask your doctor about trying an extended release pain medication, for something that lasts a lot longer than 3-4 hours. A few different options in that category are: AVINZA capsules are a modified-release formulation of morphine sulfate indicated for once daily administration for the relief of moderate to severe MS CONTIN (another variation of morphine sulfate) is an opioid agonist product indicated for the management ...

Could someone please advise me , as I have a BIG PROBLEM. I'm suffering from Central Pain SYNDROME following a severe STROKE in 2006 . I was tried on several drugs, but methadone @ 150mg daily is what I've been on for years, which totally destroyed my teeth . In November of 2015, I was told by Pain Management, that because of new federal guidelines that my MME-morphine equivalent MUST BE MUCH LOWER . They started reducing my daily level at that time .Now, 6 months later, I'm now at 20 mg, tomorrow, I go on 15 mg daily, after being on 20 for the last week. I go to the pain clinic Friday and I'm not sure what to ask for, as I need 24 hour pain relief . Could anyone with experience please Help . I'm in a bad situation, but h happy that I'm getting off of the methado...

A new pain pill exstinded relief that starts with and a not avinsa ## Hi Eddie, What about the name Astramorph? It too is another brand of Morphine like Avinza. However, the difference is that Astramorph is an inj./epidural. And while I'm not sure how new it is or how long the relief lasts, inj's. are typically a lot stronger than oral pain meds due to increased bioavailability. Unfortunately I haven't heard of any other pain meds that start with an 'A', but if anything I hope this at least helps narrow down your search.

Medication usually do not work on me - not even morphine when I was in pain at the hospital. Sleeping pills do not affect me. However xanax worked a little but that was a relief as I have insomnia. I took 3 last night or maybe the night before - I don't know. All I know is I work up at 7:00 p.m the next day or the next day. I guess it worked but it scared me. What happene? I am on 1mg and just have taken it for 6 mos. ## Well, I think you are already aware of what happened, you took too many! Xanax is a very potent Benzodiazepine. You've been taking 1mg and suddenly jumped to 3mgs, so yes, I'd say it worked for you, a little too well. You can become addicted to these or overdose, so you really do need to be careful. I suggest speaking to your doctor regarding some other opti...

Last night I was taken to the ER, for an intestinal blockage, this morning they gave me Morphine for the pain... but I am out of ER now and tomorrow I want go back onto the Subs. Will I go into precip w/d's or should I wait longer? ## Hi Joshua, Sorry to hear about your current situation. Hopefully you're still getting some relief from the Morphine they gave you. Regarding your wanting to go back on Subs, a lot of patients on here say it's usually best to wait until withdrawals have started in order for Suboxone to be fully effective. So in my opinion it may be better to wait a little longer first. But I also think you should probably discuss this with your doctor as soon as you're able to, just to be on the safe side. I hope this helps!

Im on morphine 20ml daily and fentonyl patches 100mg every 3 days I ran out of my pain relief last week n used subutex today. My script is due tomorrow is it safe to take without being in agony??? ## My advice - I currently have a very low tolerance and applied a 100 mcg patch 10 hrs ago. I stopped a 180 mg daily oxy habit of 3 years 2/14. Since 2/14 until now my opiate usage would be 5 30 mg oxy's monthly typically - I've used maybe 25 mcg orally 3 times in the past 5 months and 60 mg morphine plugged a couple times. I have also used subutex a few times I no longer experience opiate w/d and a dose of 30 mg oxy leaves me extremely buzzed for a good 12 hrs. That being said, I rec'd a 100 mcg patch today to help me with extreme back pain for the next 4 days. I was nervous to w...
