How about getting off of 30 years of methadone and 6 years of xanax? I nearly died getting off of the xanax and im slowly detoxing off of the methadone. There was a time in the mid 70 when conselors would laugh at you if u came to a Methadone clinic with a hydro o oxycodone habit trying to get methadone. You had to have a dilaudid, morphine or heroin habit.

In order to protect their patients from becoming addicted, doctors are extremely careful about dispensing meds like Xanax or Oxycontin. No reputable doctor will leave it to the patient to regulate their own dosage. This is why I suspect all these nightmare withdrawal stories I hear are from people who ABUSE prescription drugs. These drugs are treated as controlled substances by the law. People who take them illegally are taking a serious risk. If you can't regulate yourself, things like Xanax and Vicodin and Demerol should be avoided completely. If you CHOOSE to abuse a known addictive medication, don't blame the drug.

Also there was a time when doctors would prescribe opiates methadone and benzo's in one office call. This country was awashed in prescription drugs in the late 90s to about 2009 before the courts were overloaded in prescription meds problems. We dont give a s*** if u believe us or not,but we know.

Thank you Disturbed 1! Although this thread is old there is some pretty bad advice posted here. I would easily say more people die from a Xanax withdrawal than an overdose of alprazolam!

Do NOT stop xanax cold turkey, it can kill you! I have been on xanax for 20 years. 1mg at night. I decided I did not want this drug to own me. I cut back to 1/4 of the 1 mg. Big mistake. Head hurt, confused, trouble walking, light headed. I talked to my doctor and he told me to take 1/2 mg for 6 months then go to 1/4 for 6 months.

The first two days after I started taking the 1/4 of a mg,
I do not remember anything of those two days.

I started the 1/2 mg last night and I hope the withdrawls
start to easy up.

I don't know your insurance situation but under Obamacare you are supposedly eligible for free in patient withdrawal care. I myself would like to know how that works?

To "starryeyes"...I say this to u from MY OWN EXPERIENCES OF ON AGAIN/OFF AGAIN WITHDRAWAL SICKNESS....im sorry but you HAVE NO CLUE WHAT UR TALKING ABOUT!!!! As it sounds like you have never been on the other end of the spectrum.....although I applaud u for being able to take those meds as prescribed w/ no problems.....on the other hand, not all of us are lucky enough to be able to do that unfortunately so im just saying dont knock something u seem to know nothing about. Not all of us are your "typical junkie" or bad people like society likes to claim. IT CAN HAPPEN TO ANYONE!!!

Death from Xanax withdrawals occurs rarely if ever. Experts say it's technically possible but I haven't heard of any documented deaths. There are few enough deaths from overdoses, and even those are usually from mixing it with other sedatives. If you've been using Xanax under a doctor's supervision EXACTLY AS PRESCRIBED, and discontinue it gradually according to their advice, which will probably be determined by your dosage as well as other factors, there is NO reason that you should encounter severe withdrawal symptoms.
