I have an infected large bump on my calf. What is the extensive list of side effects for this medication?

Karen STOP taking this drug NOW. Sounds like anaphalatic shock. I have had that reaction and it can kill you. I am allergic to bee stings. but antibiotics are famous for causing this. It happened to me once with codeine too. I was red from the tips of my toes to the top of my head my poor hubby was trying to scrach me and gave me my Epi Pen shot and benedryl. My doctor said codeine could kill me if I ever take it again, trust me, I won't.... I hope you feel better soon

Sheila. it sounds like you may be suffering from a live treatening allergic reaction to this drug, If you are swelling up the next thing could be your throat and you can die. Get to the ER ASAP...

I've been taking Sulfamethoxazole-TMP DS tablet 800-160 MG for seven full days now due to having a UTI. It is a ten day course and prescribed to take twice daily. It took about 5 days before I started feeling any relief but it is starting to work. I experienced no side effects which is wonderful considering I suffer from G.E.R.D. and almost every medication either unpsets my stomach or causes me to vomit. I feel bad for all of the people having some terrible side effects. Good Luck to you all and hope you all feel better soon.

i was prescribed sulfameth for a UTI and immediately after i took it i began severely itching and almost burning down there. Is this normal??

I'd let your prescribing physician know ASAP. Also, read post # 1 in this discussion thread, as it lists the side effects of this drug...

I had laparoscopic surgery 7 days ago to remove endometriosis. I started having moderate/severe pain in my left flank, which I have felt before-- kidney infection. I went to my doc so she could check on my incision, as it was red. She prescribed me SULFAMETH/TRIMETHOPRIM 800/160 TABS for the redness in my belly button and my kidney infection.

About an hour after taking it yesterday, I developed shaking in my hands, chills, a weird taste in my mouth, some abdominal cramps, back pain, and extraordinary weakness. It feels awful. At first, I thought it was just my kidney infection making me feel crappy. But now I'm almost 100% sure it's from this medication.
I know that you are not supposed to discontinue an antibiotic-- especially with something like a kidney infection... I don't want it to get worse. But it's the weekend, and I really hate to bother the doc on call. Is this an allergic reaction or just side effects?

I should also mention I am allergic to Cephalosporins. Hooray.

Hi Ellen,

It sounds like your body is not reacting well to this medication, as what you have reported is beyond the threshold of normal side effects (especially the back pain). I would recommend letting the prescribing physician know because you might need to be switched to a different med.

"Common Side Effects
Headache, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or loss of appetite. None of the above common side effects require immediate attention. If you experience them for a few days, talk to your physician about more advice. Do not try to treat them on your own.

Less Common Side Effects
Muscle aches/pains, difficulty breathing, unusual bleeding/bruising, bluish fingernails/lips, any blood disorders, joint aches/pains, pain or difficulty passing urine, skin rash, hives, itching, yellowing of the eyes/skin, lower back pain, allergic reactions, unusual weakness/tiredness, fever, chills, sore throat, increased sensitivity to the sun/ultraviolet light, any redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth. Contact your doctor right away if you've experienced any of these Less Common Side Effects."

This is my second antibiotic for broncitis. I am on the 800mg bactrim and it is making me feel horrible. I sometimes get the shakes, nheadaches, lower backaches, I went out in the sun yesterday for a few and came up with some hives. Benadryl helped that out. I have pretty bad nausea, no appetite. I have loss of sleep and hot sweats at night. I am on steroids too butnothing seems to help these side affects die down. Anything I can do to lower these symptoms.

Hi I have been taken the sulfameth trimethoprim for 10 days and i am on ortho tri cyclen lo birthcontrol pills. I had sex twice but he pulled out. sorry if thats TMI but i read nothing on the pamphlet saying it affects the pill. does anyone know for sure?

I am currently taking flomax due to an enlarged prostate. taking s/t800/160 for 3 days. finding it slightly more difficult to urinate....what should I do? I am taking it for an infected lump on my upper leg.

I can not sleep. No other side effects. Is loss of sleep common on this med? I'm super restless. I'm on no other medications.

OMG, everyone sounds like this med has been horrible for them, i've been taking it for 5 days and have no side effects whatsoever. Glad I didn't read this before I started taking it...lol.

I have been taking this for 5 days for a kidney infection. I have felt terrible, weak, get hot real easy and cold chills. I also have a problem today that I have never had before and I wanted to know if this med could cause it. I could not get an erection no matter what we tried.

I was in FL and got bite more than once, had to go to the ER they gave me this 800 twice daily. The itching never stopped so the sores got worse, made it back home yesterday and saw my doctor and he gave me a shot of steroids, feeling a lot better today. Only side effect was it gave me Thursh..which meant more meds..

wow pat now i am terribly scared i have an infected bite on the side of my calf...this is my third day on this med and ive had dizziness shortness of breath...and i just noticed my ankle is swollen....what ever happened to your friend afterward if you dont mind my asking?

I have been on this med for an infection in my elbow joint for about 8 days now, and just developed hives from it last night. Also experiencing some muscle pain, loss of appetite, and sore throat/stuffy nose as well as a headache. Called the doctor today, she said that I should stop taking it but if I start to swell up that I should go to the ER. Definitely would NOT recommend this medication to anyone. I have never had an allergic reaction to anything in my entire life except this stuff.

I stopped at the store and got an oatmeal bath additive by Aveeno, it really seemed to help with the itching. Motrin helps with the muscle pain and headache, but who wants to take a drug to relieve the side effects of a drug?

Anyone know how long this medication stays in your body?

I have been taking sulfameth/trimethoprim 800, and I have had the chills, loss of appetite, muscle weakness in my legs, headache, hard time going to sleep, and I can barely breathe at night. I called the doctor office and the nurse said I am ok as long as I don't have a rash. I don't care what she says I am stopping these pills today.

It all sounds normal to me. I got the Di, HA, Mus. & Joint pains, Diz., Nas., you name it. No yellow skin/eyes, no vomiting but close, no trouble breathing, So I have most of the Side Effects and they suck! It feels like the flu. What the hell kind of chemical is this? It feels like poison.

Oh by the way, I get night sweats and chills, Craps all over, can't eat a thing, stuffy nose, sore throat, muscle weakness, I can't sleep well, I'm up like every hour on the hour growning, I'm super tired now but can't sleep really...Reason for taking it....Spider Bite that introduced MSSA into my hand. I hate spiders, hospitals, and this medication.
