Lupus Pain Management

Updated

My son's wife is claiming her doctor told her she has lupus. I say claimed because she is a compulsive liar and we have not seen any of lupus or that he has even said this. She has a prescription a doctor is giving her of 150 Oxycodone a month that she uses up in 2 weeks. This is a huge concern of mine because the children are being neglected while my son is at work. She is so drugged up, the 1 and 2 year old are left gated in her bedroom while shes passed out from the drugs. Also, her pysch is gone. Shes irrational, turned very mean and abusive. Common sense is no longer there. What doctor in their right mind would prescribe that amount of pills month after month. I feel she is lying about having lupus. But Heppa law prevents my son from discovering the truth. HELP!!

Hello, Daisy! How are you and your family? I'm very sorry about everything you're dealing with!

That's really not an unusual amount to be prescribed for pain, but as I'm sure you've guessed, that amount is usually intended to last a month, not just 2 weeks.

The FDA classifies this medication as being a narcotic analgesic, so it has the potential to be habit forming and may cause side effects, such as nausea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth and constipation.

And while the HIPAA laws prevent the doctor from giving information to your or your son, without her permission, it doesn't prevent you from talking to them. You can contact them to voice your concerns, tell them what's going on and how fast she goes through that bottle of pills. They may not be aware of what's going on.

Does anyone else have any advice or suggestions?

I'm going to chime in for a second if you don't mind.

Are you aware that Lupus is considered an invisible illness? How exactly can she prove it to you Ma'am? I have SLE with CNS and unfortunately a mother in law that has the mentality that if I was really that sick, she would be able to tell. And it is the worst kind of hell to have someone so close to you say such horrible things when you are already being attacked by your own body. If you are genuinely so concerned, reach out to her and go help with your grandchildren.

As far as the pain medications, I can't personally speak on that subject as I am highly sensitive to any of them and rarely take them. Yes that sounds like an insane amount of medicine to be taking for anyone in a two week span and she may have a problem. It's very likely that she might get addicted. It happens all the time. Again, reach out to her. Have her husband speak to the doctor about the issue. That alone could save her life and possibly the children's if in fact she really is abusing the medications as stated.

On another note, do some research on Lupus and the psychiatric effects. Some lupus patients actually experience a form of psychosis which is excaberrated by pregnancy and even more so for some in the first year after birth.

I hope you don't think I'm being rude. I truly don't mean to be, but as someone who has had to literally take my paperwork and show this woman solid proof of my diagnosis and she still swears I just want sympathy, I absolutely had to take a stab at possibly shedding some light on the situation.

I genuinely hope she is lying to you and everyone else, I wouldn't wish this on anyone. I will be praying for your entire family in the meantime. I wish all of you well.
