Bendectin And Birth Defects (Page 31)

Updated

I took this drug in the 1970's while pregnant. Am looking for the side effects to the babies. Drug has been off the market for many years. Not sure on correct spelling. Used for nausea and vomiting during pregnancy. Thank you for any help you can send me. Sincerely, Dana.

I, too took this drug for morning sickness for my pregnancies in 1970, 1972 and 1975. My first two were sons and seem to have had no serious health issues. In 1975 I had twin girls. One of my daughters was born with mal-rotation of the bowel, which was corrected with surgery when she was 8 days old. At three months it was discovered she a hernia in her lower abdominal area. Later she had a second hernia in her upper body. Tragically, she died in a freak accident in her home when she was 34. I always thought about these issues because they were developmental and I took this drug. Her twin sister has suffered from endometriosis all of her life since puberty and is now being evaluated for MS.

I have long wondered whether the Bendectin I took for all 9 months of my 1970, has anything to do with my sons large cavernous hemangioma.

I am a victim of this medicine as well. First I had to have kidney surgery. Then I had to have major female operations.... Last was a hysterectomy at 24. Now I'm 36 and trying to get on my feet after finally getting my degrees and I'm being told I may only have till 40 to adopt. This is upsetting to me for obvious reasons but also bc me and my husband are both only children. I didn't want someone else to have a child for me. I'd rather adopt. I'm also having other health issues that's more recent than 12 years ago that I believe is related to the meds. I am looking to see if anyone knows if it's possible to still sue? This is is ridiculous. If you know of anyone who has an open case I can join or someone who's willing to take the case, please email me {edited for privacy}.

Just happened upon an advertisement in an Obstetrics magazine for a drug called Diclegis. Reading further, i noticed that it was just a renewed version of Bendectin, containing 10mg of doxylamine and 10mg of pyridoxine. I specifically looked for any mention of teratogenic studies done, and found a paragraph in fine print that stated clinical trials done between 1963 and 1991 showed no significant evidence of birth defects, in both the pills containing dicyclomine, and those without it. One thing i'd like to know is whether my mother's prescription contained dicyclomine or not.

Dear MM, I'm not sure to whom you're addressing your question but I was born here in Australia with unilateral *microtia* and *aural atresia*, which means that I've never been able to hear on my right hand side. As to whether Debendox [Bendectin] caused my congenital deformities I do not know, although I do have some long-held suspicions, and I remain ever vigilant for any evidence that might prove Debendox [Bendectin] to be in some way teratogenic, which of course means that I'm no orphan.

I too remain vigilant for a causal link, even if just for piece of mind...Would be nice to have an answer for my mom, who feels awful that she took something that possibly caused me skeletal deformities and adrenal/CNS issues...Honestly, unless a new chapter of unfortunate events is unveiled with the current Diclegis, I don't see any answers on the horizon.

I was born in 1981 and my mom took this drug with me and my siblings. But with me she took what they thought was the max safe dosage. I was born with an ear deformity which my parents paid out of pocket to fix because it was considered cosmetic. At age 19 though I found out I had malroation of the small GI tract and they were herniated. And now at 34 I am going in for an mri to check for chari malformation which could be yet another defect. I dont know if these are all related to the drug but I dont think its a coincidence. Did you hear its back on the market?

I had nine months of debilitating morning sickness and was prescribed Benedictine in 1979. My daughter was a very colicky baby. Actually cried every day all day for the first two years of her life. When she turned three, she would not let me hold her, and literally would push me away. She was angry most of the time throughout her childhood. She was diagnosed with ADD and Oppositional Personality Disorder. Her teen years were incredibly difficult, and she had severe depression. Now she is in her mid thirties, and has been diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder. I believe that Benedictine is probably the reason for her disabilities and mood disorders. Anyone else have children with BPD after taking Benedictine during pregnancy?

I just came across this linked article about Diclectin / Diclegis [Bendectin / Debendox etc.] whilst reading this week's online weekly series about thalidomide presently featuring on *The Conversation* - "Why did thalidomide's makers ignore warnings about their drug?"

Ever look into vaccine injury? The symptoms you describe kinda sound more like a bombardment of heavy metals instead of Benedictin exposure...

I took Benedictine in 1977 for nausea. My daughter was born with multiply heart defects. She had an ASD VSD Wolfe Parkinson- White, Ebsteins Anomoly, and an aneurysm by the VSD. She had corrective surgery when she was 11. When at UCLA they did ask if I was a down-winder (I was not, but my husband was) and if I took any medications.
I only took the benedictine. I also had a tubal infection right before I got pregnant with her. Now I hear it may cause fertility problems She does want children. I do not know if anything can be done at this late stage.

I took this drug in 1979 when I had my daughter and she has a learning disability and mental health issues. Is there anything that can be done to help these people to be compensated for the damage they have had?

I took this drug mentioned for nausea in 1979 during the pregnancy of my daughter.
It has affected her life greatly. She has a learning disability and mental health issues. She always has had a tough time in her life and has a hard time holding a job. I feel very sad how she has been affected.

Carol, thank you for posting your concerns on your daughter's behalf.

With your question: "Is there anything that can be done to help these people to be compensated for the damage that they have had?", it never hurts to mention the actual *brand name* of the drug that you took, because this drug has now been sold under many different brand names in many different countries, with Bendectine, Diclectin, Debendox, and now of course, Diclegis, being the most familiar brand names. If you mention the actual *brand name* it then gives anyone who is still researching this drug some idea of which country you're from, when you took it [1979], and the particular circumstances that you believe resulted from your having taken this drug. I'm from Perth, Western Australia, and my mum took Debendox in 1953 when she was carrying yours truly. I have unilateral microtia / aural atresia, on my right-hand side. This simply means that I've never been able to hear on my right-hand side except via bone-conduction, and of course I cannot locate where sounds come from because one needs two ears to do this without having to turn one's head quickly back and forth should the sound endure long enough for me to pin its location down. And of course the *cocktail party effect* does not apply to me nor does my being able to properly enjoy stereophonic quadrophonic music etc..

Always remember that even the smallest bit of information about anything at all has been known to give a persistent and diligent drug researcher just the 'clue' that they're looking for, just like 'the public' are the eyes and ears of the 'the police'. This drug, under whichever of the many names [Bendectine, Diclegis, Debendox, Diclegis etc., etc.,] that it has been sold over many years, is the most studied drug in history, and it will likely continue to be studied until hell freezes over, and there's really no substantive reason why it shouldn't. Just recently, a Portuguese painkilling drug was trialled in France with some volunteers and it has sadly left one volunteer brain dead and five others critically ill. Just think, what if they hadn't have been in such a hurry to trial this drug and had used a lesser amount of volunteers, and the poor brain dead victim wasn't among them, and only the five volunteers got critically ill and then made a full recovery? They would then have known that this drug was just too dangerous for human consumption, and *pain* is a natural phenomenon anyway, so why try to kill it with a new dodgy drug using human 'guinea pigs' when we still have efficacious opiates etc.? The obvious reason for this new drug being trialled is that Portugal, just like Spain and many other countries, is suffering really badly economically, and if this new had have worked just as they had hoped in killing pain then the dollars would have soon rolled in. Chances are that this Portuguese drug manufacturer [Bial] will, in time, if it doesn't become bankrupt, just change its name [Bial] and continue to trial other just-as-dodgy drugs as if nothing has happened. There's a very well-known saying, which no doubt is just as well-known in Portugal as it is in many other countries worldwide, and it's simply: "The dogs are barking...but the caravan move$ on."

I have watched the news on this drug for 38 years. The real answer lies I believe in the original composition and the falsified clinical studies. Freedom of information of the raw data from the 1970 is what is needed. Iam not a doctor, scientist or the like but I pray every day this company is held responsible. Thank you for all your support to these forgotten souls....like me and my daughter. Blessing.

This describes my daughter........accurately........I had inj of Bendictine in 1973
I have felt guilty for so many years......
Also, no one has spoken about "mom!. My daughter also was born with a floating rib cage. Her connective tissues are weak. Well, I was diagnosed with lupus in the 90's and I have a very difficult time with connective tissues injuries and having continual pain. I do wonder if we BOTH were affected.
