Can You Take Benzos While You're On Suboxone? (Page 7)

Updated

I've been seeing a lot of posts regarding taking benzos while on Suboxone. It is ok to take a benzo w/ suboxone - as long as you're taking the prescribed dosages you'll be fine. Now if you're taking 3 or 4 8mgs of Suboxone and say 5 or 6 Xanax that's not good, that's where the reported deaths have come from. I've been on Subs for 5 yrs. I've also been subscribed klonopin and am currently taking valium w/ it and it's fine. I'm on a low dose and only take what I am prescribed.

I'm not a doctor but I doubt it. However, if you start to feel like you're having trouble breathing you may want to make a call.

At present, I'm on 8mgs of Subutex and 4mgs of Clonazepam- and have been at this dose for quite some time and have never had the slightest problem.

I'm not sure what Valium dosage you're on, and whether your doctor prescribed them or not, but it's highly unlikely he would've dosed you like this if he thought there were going to be any problems.

Read further down the forum and you might start to feel comforted. There's nothing wrong with taking Benzos with Sub as long as you're under the supervision of a doctor and not self-medicating at higher doses and mixing with other drug cocktails. Take it responsibly.

I've been on Subs and Clonazepam for 4, almost 5 years and have been fine.

Hope this has been of some help.

I just actually went to detox for five days. They gave me a sub 24 hours after I was admitted and I never felt ONE WD symptom. It's only been about a week since I've been clean but I feel amazing! I have no cravings at all for pills. I'm prescribed 8mgs twice a day but what I do is cut it in half and only take 4mgs in the am and 12 hours later, if needed I will take the other 4mgs. I think what's saving me from going out and using is the subs! Good luck to y'all! Oh and just another piece of advice-don't go cold turkey! One it can set your body into total shock and two it really f***ing sucks!!! I tried and for two weeks I just wanted to die! I really recommend going into detox or if you don't have insurance ween yourself of the pills. Get someone you trust to monitor your pills and only take them when you start to WD! Helped me the first time I went off them but I'm definitely a HUGE fan of the subs and totally recommend them! As for sleep....I take ambien which is prescribed by my doctor, but he says after a while I won't even need them! Good luck!:)

Hello there I am prescribed 16 mg of Suboxone a day I usually don't take that much and I recently been prescribed .5 mg Clonazepam twice a day . I have a really bad anxiety disorder and it's hard for me to function during the day so I need the anxiety medicine . Problem is I didn't tell my doctor who prescribed me the amxiety medicine that I was on Suboxone but my Suboxone Dr. knows that I needed something for my anxiety, he told me to see somebody about it. What is it that I should do ? should I tell my anxiety doctor I was just scared she wouldn't give me something for my anxiety? Or I didn't think she should know because it's just treatment 9 million? Don't know how to explain it I just need some advice if you can help me out please reply to me.

I w ould simply be ,iohonest with your anxiety Dr and say you were very nervous and anxious about how they'd react, and you apologize for withholding that information from them. Tell the Dr that your Sub doctor is ok with it , perhaps even sign a release so that you the two doctors can speak about it if they need to.

All doctors have a way to pull up the current med school you're taking, you'd rather this come from you than from them finding out another way.

If you're apologetic enough, and say you never meant to "deceive" anyone- you were simply anxious and it got the best of you, and it will never happen again.

I've had similar situations happen to me before and I've found the majority of doctors are appreciative you came forth with the truth and they're quite understanding. But from here on out, Nothing can or should be withheld between the two of you.

Prepare notes beforehand so you can read from them while you're with the doctor- that helps you not get distracted and allows u to ask the doctor to be patient and just listen until you're finished. I've done that too- it helps.

Truly, IMO, honesty is the best way to handle these situations. You might be pleasantly surprised by how understanding your doctor actually may be.

Good luck, I'm sure it will be fine. Make an appointment for a consultation with the doctor and get it over with.

Best of luck my friend!

I apologize for some of the grammar mistakes on my post (darn auto-text), I knew they were there but sent the msg before I could edit my mistakes.

Hopefully, you can still make it out well enough to understand what I was trying to say- especially in the first two paragraphs.

Sorry about that :)

Thanks, and best of luck- again!

If I were you I would ask your Sub Dr first before taking it. Benzodiazepines and Subs don't mix! I've read people say that they've done it, but I know a person who died in his sleep from the combination. Because ofthe dangers, alot of sub Drs will immediately kick you out of the program if you test positive for Benzos. I would definitely consult with him before risking those consequences.

I'm sorry for your loss.

And it's always advisable to speak with your doctor.

But your statement is egregiously misleading.

I'm not trying to be misleading. I was on suboxone for 3 years, and saw 2 different sub Drs during those 3 years because I moved to a different state 1 1/2 into it and had to find a new Dr after moving. At one point while seeing the first Dr, I asked her if I could take Valium for a cross country plane flight (which I've always done because I get anxiety when flying) and she told me it would be very risky to mix the 2 even at low doses and if I insisted on taking the Valium to skip my suboxone dose for at least 1 full day. Then, when signing on with my 2nd Sub Dr I had to sign a contract prior to treatment and in that contract it specifically stated that any urine test showing Benzos would be an immediate and permanent discontinuation in his program because of serious risks and as he was verbally going over the contract with me he told me numerous times very emphatically that the combo has been known to be fatal. Particularly Xanax. Now I'm sure in those cases, they were being abused but that doesn't discount the fact that 2 separate Drs issued the same warning to me about the same medication.

Then perhaps instead of making a "blanket statement" like the one you used yesterday, perhaps you could've re-phrased it to say "In MY experiences...." instead.

I've been on Subs for years, along with Klonopin the entire duration, AND with several doctors, and none of them have had a problem prescribing them at the same time.

There should always be caution advised to the patient that if they abuse the Benzo it could lead to respiratory depression. But sticking to your prescribed dosage, and not mixing other drug cocktails to go along with your prescribed regimen, is fine. There are numerous examples of this ALL over the Internet.

Yes, some doctors will indeed be more strict than others. That is true.

Just be careful about how you phrase what's happened in your own experiences and try to avoid over - generalizing next time.

Regards,

This is just my experience....I take 8 mg suboxone film daily, and about 5 times a month, I'll take xanax, no more than 2 or 3 mg. I haven't had any problems, but if you use both at a higher dosage, you can really depress your respiratory system which can lead to death. Be smart , start slow, and BE CAREFUL! Telling someone they're dumb to try it will be ignored. Depends on your tolerance, health, etc. so start LOw and be careful. Good luck!

Subs are horrible! I was on them almost three years! Started on one and a half strip a day and weaned down to two Mgs or less towards the end of my time on them. I stopped taking them 26 days ago and it was absolute hell! Way worse than opiate withdrawal ... And still having mild withdrawal symptoms... As well as insomnia and low energy. No one should stay on them longer than a week or month tops! Had I known it would be so horrible to come off of I would have never went on them. The doctors don't tell you.. And I think it should be illegal to keep anyone on them for a long period of time. I literally had to put my whole life on hold this whole month... I have a ton of respect for anyone who has detoxed from them . This has been the hardest thing I have ever done. Just shows how potent the drug is. And honestly it's just as bad as being on any opiate! I sure hope I feel myself again soon.

The Diazapam will do nothing but perhaps ease some of your anxiety, that's it. It won't do anything for the sweats.

I'd recommend you ask your doctor for a med called Clonodine. It's a blood pressure med that greatly helps in relieving certain w/d symptoms: sweats, anxiety, and restlessness. It lowers your blood pressure which many- including myself- find extremely helpful. It's generic and inexpensive too.

Benzos work for Sub withdrawals for some people, while others find they don't help at all. Everyone's physiology is different.

* Disclaimer * I'm not a doctor. Just a Sub a very, very experienced Sub patient.

Good luck my friend!

I have been in Suboxone for 8 plus years. I have to take a drug test every month and is always clean. l only take 4mg a day. For the past week I have been taking Valium due to stress only one 10mg a night to sleep. My drug test will show the Valium will my doctor stop my Suboxone?

If your Sub doctor is unaware of your Valium usage you run the risk of being reprimanded to some degree.

Generally, most Sub doctors I've encountered demand to know what other meds I'm taking, or I volunteer the info anyway.

If you've been with the same Sub doctor this whole time, and the Valium is from a valid prescription, I can't see him kicking you out but rather giving you a stern warning of some sort.

It might not be a bad idea to let him know prior to taking the test. Tough to do? Yes. But better in the long run for your relationship.

Good luck friend!

Very supportive there my friend.
Each one of us takes our own path towards recovery.
How you choose to get clean is an individual's choice and they shouldn't be made fun of or mocked because they chose a different method than you did.

There's no place for comments like that.

And to you sir who's on the Bupe and in a better place- GOOD FOR YOU!!!

Kind Regards,
