Thyroid Toxic

I have been on levythorixine for almost a year first it was 25 then 6 months later they upped it to 50 now 75 3 months later. Since September I have been slowly going down hill. I have been to the ER twice with lightheadiness and heart palpitations they have blown me off as panic attacks. The past 7 days I have been in bed unable to get up bad lightheadedness weak shaky feeling I have been to several doctors and no one could find the cause. Today went to an internist and after reviewing my T levels he stated that I should have never been upped from the 25. I have basically been overmedicated ie poisened. every symptom I have had he described. He told me to stop all thyroid ASAP. He wants to start over in 3 months with the tests. Has anyone else been through this hell?

Yes! I'm going through the same hell as you! I've been feeling horrible most of the time for several months! I'm a 57 year old female. I've been on Levothyroxine for 30+ years and never felt very well. I'm sure my doc thinks I'm a hypochondriac because I'm frequently complaining about how lousy I feel. My thyroid lab results look fantastic! My doctor says my bad feelings couldn't possibly be from Levothyroxine. I disagree! He diagnosed me with fibromyalgia in 2009, and now blames all my symptoms on it. I'm convinced it's my thyroid medication that needs to change. He prescribed me an antidepressant that I won't take. I'm not depressed! So, I recently went to a naturopath who put me on a natural thyroid pill called WP Thyroid. She said it's like Armour, only better. I started on 1 grain about 3 weeks ago. After about a week I started having hyper symptoms: racing heart, anxiety, panic attacks, a feeling like I'm not real, lightheadedness, palpitations, vibrating body, insomnia, and a feeling like I would die at any moment! Absolutely terrifying! I had a blood test and it showed that I'm over medicated. I ready knew that, of course! The naturopath told me to stop taking the WP Thyroid for 3 days and then start a lower dose. The very next day, she left on a 10-day vacation. Not good news for me! I felt like I was dying! I waited 3 days and still felt the same. There was NO way I was going to swallow another one of those pills! I can't function. Canceling all social and business appointments. I called her associate doctor who's an MD and told him my story. He said that the WP Thyroid has a long "half life," so I'll continue to feel the affects of the excess medication for at least a week! Agh! I'm on day 4 of that week. I'm not going to take another thyroid pill until I feel better. That's my story to this point. I just hope you and can find a way to feel better!

Natural/Gaia Thyroid support, W/Levothyroxine... I have Hypothyroidism, just turned 60yrs. old (look 49, :) I've had hypothyroidism for 30yrs. Cold/overweight/no energy/s/times depressed/legs ache/can't fall asleep/irritated. Soo done with taking Levothyroxine. 3 mons ago they upped my thyroid meds. I've gained weight, feel on fire, look bloated. So now YES, I've taken matters into my own hands, I've done alot of research on weaning off of Hypothyroid medication, this will take a least 2 mons, or longer. Currently taking Gaia Thyroid support 2 every other day, off days, I take 1 Levothyroxine tablet. Slowing but surely... and boys n girls,, I'm excited and starting to feel like a normal human being. I promise to be wise and go in for lab work. Any added info. for weaning off of Levothyroxine??, I'd appreciate it....

Dana, I know the feeling. You just want somebody to listen to you and your world feels like its coming to an end. Hopefully we both will get a confirmed diagnosis and go back to a normal life. I have lost my faith in those who practice medicine I have been blown off 4 times, twice by the ER just to be sent home feeling hopeless and depressed and left to deal with an overwhelming illness. I know how you feel! I would try a 2nd opinion that's what I did and I am hoping I have an answer. I will pray for you and we will be ok just have to keep searching. Thank you for replying its nice to know that I am not alone. God bless. Amber

Thank you Verwon for your reply, this has been a long road. Basically my place of employment has a doctors office free to employees and we have been encouraged to use this clinic due to an increase in our deductibles (political job). Anyway, I am not medically versed on thyroid levels I guess I am niave and trusted their opinion. I was fine on the 25s then went back for a recheck and upped to 50s then they said I was still not in the therapeutic range and upped to 75. Since that time which was in August I have been slowly going down to the point of going on intermittent FMLA to keep from losing my job. This last week has been the worst I could not even get out of bed and have been depressed I could not even get out of bed and take care of my 4year old and for no one to believe that something is wrong. I have also been seeing a cardiologist since this started and he has diagnosed me with supra ventricular tachycardia, yesterday the internist said all these issues are from the over medication which has caused my heart to act up and the severe lightheadiness. I am almost 48 hours with no thyroid meds and just hoping this lightheadiness let's up, the dr said it would take a week to get some normalcy in my life. The fear has been the worst part of this not knowing if I was going to be there for my family. Thanks again for your concern. Amber

Oh my Yes! I am going through this hell right now and swear I have felt worse! My TSH was 6.4 3 weeks ago and I was put on 25mg of Levo. I have been going down the tubes ever since! I just had a baby in May and I am already a hormonal mess. I have been so depressed since taking g this drug along with a hyper feeling, panic attacks, night terrors, way to much energy like I could go run a marathon with no training, insomnia and constant non stop crying. This has been going on for 2 weeks now. I told GP begging for a change and he told me to stick with it. Went to my OB today and couldn't stop crying. Called the GP again today and forced my way into an appointment tomorrow. I researched on DR. Google and think that I am.oover medicated so I split my pill today. I'm still crying and depresses but my anxiety, panick, and hyper feelings aren't as bad. I am feeling my Hypo symptoms more to. So you are not alone! I am also wondering if this could be a reaction to The fillers/additives in the drug. Hope you feel better soon! I understand your hell and it's awful. :(

Hello, Amber! How are you doing? I'm very sorry about what you've been through.

And yes, there are other posts on here from people that have been through the same type of thing. Sometimes, I think doctors jump the gun on diagnosing a thyroid problem, especially in women and, even when one is present, I think the medication isn't always dosed and handled correctly.

The reason why I say especially in women, is because other hormonal imbalances, such as those caused by perimenopause, can mimic the symptoms of a thyroid condition and could cause odd readings on some hormonal tests, so doctors need to be very careful.

Learn more Levothyroxine details here.

On the other hand, these symptoms can also be side effects of the medication, so sometimes, its hard to know what's causing the problem. It was very wise of you to get a second opinion.

Have you looked at the test results yourself?

If It were me, I'd be reviewing all the numbers from now on, to be sure.
