Taking Preventive Medication

Updated

I do not have high blood pressure. My doctor has me on Losartan 100mg because I have diabetes. I do not have kidney problems. I've been told by many people not to take medicine for prevention. What do you think?

Hello, Joan! How are you?

It is very common for a doctor to prescribe such a mediation to help protect the kidneys from the possible damage that may occur from diabetes. Thus, your doctor most likely hasn't prescribed it to prevent high blood pressure.

In this case, it would be best to follow your doctor's instructions.

The FDA lists the typical side effects of this medication as possibly including nausea, dizziness, headache, increased urination and hypotension.

Is there anything else I can help with?

He also has me on pravastatin for high cholesterol which I also do not have. I have heard horror stories about statin drugs. I don't think it's worth it to continue taking them because of the bad side effects.
