Purbac 480

Purbac 480 - My son is using Purbac 480, I need to know if it can cause damage to his liver, as he needs to take it for a long time.

Recently I noticed that his color changed to yellow, we did a bloodtest and there were no liver damage on anything else.

There has actually been some concern about using Purbac (Sulfamethoxazole + Trimethoprim), since it has been associated with both frequent mild allergic reactions and serious adverse effects, including Stevens-Johnson syndrome, myelosuppression, mydriasis, agranulocytosis, and severe liver damage (cholestatic hepatosis, hepatitis, liver necrosis, and fulminant liver failure).

That said, from my perspective, I wouldn't suggest taking this long term if your son doesn't "have to" or if he can find another alternative antibiotic with less severe side effects in the long run. You just have to keep in mind that pretty much every prescription drug poses the risk of side effects, so you can't always avoid them by going this route. If liver damage is of great concern, then it may be in your best interest to consider more natural alternatives, such as specific herbs or essential oils.

PURBAC 480 - David, thank you for the reply. The idea of possible severe liver damage is enough to stop him from taking Purbac 480.

There must be a natural alternative for his skin condition and I wil start searching for it.
