Methadone Filler Causing Allergy (Page 2)

Updated

I have a severe allergy that I have had for a year and a half now. I break out all over in the itchiest pimple like sores. They either have no liquid in them or sometimes a small amount of clear fluid. No puss. It has gotten worse over the past year and a half to where I now get huge hives and random swelling that is very painful. sometimes a foot or a hand but it's not like normal edema swelling, this is painful and a tighter swelling, definitely part of the reaction. I have no health insurance so after looking everywhere possible i cannot find anywhere to get the extremely expensive tests I would need to pin point the cause of this. my hands will get hot and then itch like crazy, my extremely thick hair has thinned to the point in the front where If something doesn't happen soon I'll have to wear a wig. The first time my doctor looked at it, the very first words out of his mouth were, That's a food or drug allergy. But like I said, No insurance, no tests. The only thing that had really changed in diet or anything I consume was 9 months before this started I had switched methadone clinics. I moved back to my home state. I've been a long time methadone patient. I started in 1999. From 1999 to Oct 2007 I was on the liquid cherry flavored methadone. Never had a single problem. 9 months after starting a new clinic that used the 40 mg Methadose tabs, all this started and has not let up one single day since. It's the only thing I take every single day no matter what and cannot quit long enough to see if it's the cause. My clinic switched a year ago to the orange 40 mg tabs made by a different manufacturer. I saw a pic in a different post they are the tabs that have 54883 on them. Ok here's my question. Is there a common filler between those two different methadones that could be responsible for this? In order to go to a clinic that has the liquid kind again I'd have to drive over 100 miles. And it's expensive to become a new patient so I don't want to switch unless I know it's a good chance that this is what's causing all this. I have been absolutely miserable for almost a year and a half without any resources for diagnosis. It's the last thing I can possibly think of and it's starting to make more and more sense. Nothing else in my diet is regular enough to cause a non-stop allergy that has gone on almost 2 years uninterupted. I've quit dairy, I was tested for Celiacs at the one clinic that tried to help but they ran all the tests they could afford. It's not an auto-immune disease we know that much. I know its an allergy, I can feel it and I've been living with it long enough to tell. Everything about it screams allergy. My clinic that I'm out now has been completely unhelpful and unwilling to get me the list of filler ingredients so I can at least research them to see if any of the them are prone to cause allergies. I guess they don't want to take a chance that I want the recipe or something, it's completely ridiculous. So my question is how can I obtain the names of the filler ingredients? When taking the medication there is so much filler left undissolved it's like 95% filler. Something in that has got to be responsible for this. Can you maybe shed some light on this at all? Whether providing me with the names of the filler ingredients or point me in the right direction where to find them. I know I could try and write the manufacturer, but if my clinic won't provide me with that info I don't see why they would either. Also I have asked my clinic, and researched online endlessly and cannot find anything anywhere about methadone fillers causing an allergy in patients or find any postings anywhere of someone who has had this same thing happen. Surely I am not the only one, theres no way, but theres no data on it anywhere. I will stop now and I hope you can help me in some way, I am trying to take this into my own hands since I can't get any help from the people who provide me with the medication. Thank you for your time.

I have had similar symptoms. I started methadone about 2 years ago. I had a horrible initial reaction; my feet swelled and I broke out in what looked like pimples at first but then quickly spread. It was as if it played on previous blemishes too. I went to my MD and they said it looked like infentigo. I also broke out in hives on my face but I just thought that was due to the fact I was starting a new job and looked horrible. I did a bunch of research and found that with any allergic reaction continued use could make the symptoms go away. My pain specialist wanted me to stop the medicine but it was the first time I felt normal and pain free in years and I was not going to give that up for vanity reasons. I continued the medicine taking it every right hours. The feet swelling and rash went away after a couple months. My pain started creeping back, so I stopped the methadone and went on something else. It did nothing to relief my pain and stopped it after two months, returning to the methadone. I broke out in the rash again. Again it went away after about a month. I want to have a child meaning I obviously need to go off the medicine. I stopped taking it for a few months but my pain was just too unbearable and I had to go back on the methadone. I broke out again. This time I went to urgent care, the Dr there said it too really looked like infentigo. This time it definitely was worse and it even spread into my hairline and started breaking my hair off and infecting my hair follicles, bad! I stuck it out and it went away after a couple months. I still don't know what is truly causing the issue because continued scheduled usage stopped the issue. I can't help but think that the methadone played a huge part since the only time I had this issue was when I started the medicine after a period of non use. I'm sorry that I don't have more helpful information, but I wanted you to know that your not alone.

My symptoms were the exact same as you. My pain dr said he had never heard of methadone causing a face rash like mine though. It stung for just water to touch my face.

I was going to the methadone clinic and had same issue. I successful weaned myself off the methadone by taking Kava Kava tea, Chamomile tea and Kratom. I really hope you get better. There are a lot of natural ways to take care of health issues. May we always have the freedom to care for our own health using naturally grown things vs being forced to use pharmaceutical drugs only.

As I had I written before I had what seemed like an allergic reaction to the Methadone I was prescribed bc my SI joint is permanently fractured. After about a month of continuous usage (10mg 3x/day) the swelling in my feet subsided and the rash went away. I have since had bloodwork and tests ran due to an abnormally high amount of weight gain and those tests came back indicating severe food allergies. Once I eliminated those foods (cow's milk (dairy), wheat, barley malt (gluten), sugar, yeast (bakers and brewers), bananas, avocados), I felt SOOOO much better and have not had any of the symptoms I previously experienced, even when I stopped and started back on the methadone, even the intensity of my pain has decreased and I now take only 5 mg (3x/day). There has been a ton of research lately on food allergies, so I would highly recommend getting tested for food allergies if you are experiencing any symptoms related to an allergic reaction; that way, you can eliminate any other possibilities for the reactions and you may even notice the Methadone is working better.

Different manufactures put in different fillers for the methadone you need to call your pharmacy and ask them what filler they put in that they have that information from the manufacturer who makes it. Good luck to you I hope everything works out

I know that some opiates repress the sneeze reflex and there is a release of histamine as well. Maybe that's why your allergies are better.

I'm going through the same thing over again. I've been dosing at a methadone clinic for over a year now. I got up to dosing 75mg. of pink liquid. Then I found out that I need ed sum surgeries so I started tapering down because My doctors said it would be much harder to control my pain unless I either quit or taper down to at least 20mg. so I got down to 20 and was having so much WITHDRAWAL it was HELLISH so I had to go back up.Mind You I only took two months to come down from 75 to 20 so that was part of the problem and then when I came back up I went from 20 to 40 within 2 weeks ands I've got welts, bumps, sometimes with clear liquid in them and some are just itchy like bite looking bumps. I called My Dr. at The clinic and He said DONT TAKE MY SUNDAY DOSE WHICH IS TODAY. SO,I'm not sure if I came back up to fast and its causing Me to get toxic or what But I do have a horrible UTI right now. I'm a bit scared but I guess He wants do some testing or something on Me tomorrow when I come in. These bumps are mostly on My legs, arms, feet, and hands. I think Clearly Methadone is bad overall. But when I first started taking Methadone. This same thing happened but slowly went away as My body adjusted. Stormy, I think is your name. If you get a notification for me replying on this post plz let me know how you are doing now that you have tapered. My num. is {edited for privacy}

I suspect the side effects are due to the dye additives and or the starch. The starch (of which the pharmaceutical co refuses to list what type of starch which is so wrong), so the starch is likely corn, gluten, rice or potatoe and highly likely with GMOs. I am very sensitive to most my meds now since about two yrs ago, incl methodone, due to reacting to the fillers (dyes and grains with GMOs) so I get my meds from a compounding pharmacy where they give me.my meds without these fillers.

Hi I have been taking liquid methadone and started having seizures, heart problems, and many other health problems that are so severe I am completely debilitated and bed ridden all of the time. I also have the sores that were described. I am in such agony each day. I have 2 seperate doctor's who wrote letters saying that I have a severe allergic reaction to methadone but I still can't get any doctor to take me off of it. I don't know why they are literally torturing me but my only guess is because they discriminate against people who take methadone because we are seen as trash drug users. The irony is amazing because they are the ones who pushed me to go onto methadone from the other opiates to begin with. Also I think the DEA has all doctors so scared to prescribe ANY OPIATES that they just flat out refuse to do so under ANY AND ALL circumstances. ..even when they know and admit to torturing and slowely killing them. I am not sure what to do anymore. But it seems as though nobody will help me to end my suffering so I hate to say this but after 4 years of this agonizing progression, my only option is to end my own suffering by killing myself. That is what our doctors and more accurately our government is doing to us...killing us. You or nobody else will find an alternative until laws are changed and the DEA is benched. You don't EVER see this in the news because it is a huge cover up and full on conspiracy. Maybe for population control i don't know? ?!? But something NEEDS to be done...for me I don't know how much longer I can survive this. If anybody has any useful information, please do share. Thank you and God Bless everyone on this POISON

Wow, I have the same EXACT PROBLEM! I am now completely bed bound. I cannot function at all anymore due to this SEVERE Allergic Reaction to Methadone. I feel like I am being poisoned more and more everyday until I will soon die. I too have tried EVERYTHING begging my doctors to take me off of methadone but they wont because they don't know how or the government doesn't allow them to. I just wish they would have warned me before they pushed it on me that you NEVER GET OFF OF THIS DRUG and that it's a worse addiction than ANY OTHER DRUG IN THE WORLD! They put me on it because I had Crohn's disease and they switched me from pain meds to this (which they are pushing on EVERYONE these days) and now I'm just dying. I have tried every doctor in the world and NO ONE can or will. I don't know how much longer until someone will expose this conspiracy but I hope I last long enough to see it! I've only been on it for 4 years and I am 33 years old! This is bulls***. Please let me know ANYONE if you know of a way off!! Thank you.

I'm having this crazy rash that looks like shingles but it's not and i have it on my face and hands; little pimples without fluid, it hurts and tingles like an arm falling asleep but the buzzing is painful and it has come on all of a sudden 6 days ago and it doesn't look normal.

Hello, I have recently stumbled upon this post while searching for the cause of my symptoms, which happen to be identical to to yours. Only difference is that I am in the liquid cherry kind, and it is the only type that has ever caused these reactions. The 40mg wafers have never been an issue for me. So, that makes me wonder if either A) You and I have developed an allergy to the methadone itself. Or B) the manufacturers of the cherry liquid at my clinic is made by the same manufacturer as whoever supplies your clinic ), & that particular manufacturer uses some of the same inactive ingredients in both formulations.

I know medication is provided by VitaPharm. Do you know the name of the manufacturer of the wafers your clinic carries?

I am having the same problem. I took methadone for years with no issues. Now with a new clinic, their cherry liquid causes hives, and itchy ears and throat. It's definitely the methadone. The symptoms are mild, but it sucks being itchy.

Yep, me too. I've taken the white pills, clear liquid and orange wafers in the past with no problems. I am definitely (mildly) allergic to the cherry liquid. Hives on my skin and itchy throat and ears. I wonder... do you have any food allergies? I'm allergic to bananas, melons and avocados.

I also get allergy itchy all over and my feet swell up from methadone, 80mg orange tang flavoured drink.

I realize that this post is from last year, but i still have to reply. Im in tears, i thought i was the only one! I am miserable, i take liquid methadone and have a severe rash on my arms and now stomach. Its been there for a long time. I went to the doc and she gave me cream that didnt do anything. There is no one at the clinic i go to that has this ugly rash. I have to wear long sleeves so people dont stare. The nurse at the clinic says shes never seen anything like this before. It hurts and looks horrific! Not sure what to do. Yes, getting off methadone is the plan. Until then, be a hermit?!
