Metformin Dosage

I was diagnosed as diabetic mid-December 2014 and put on Lantus shots and Metformin 500 mg at breakfast and dinner. Does this med harm kidneys or liver or any other bad effects from taking it? Are there metformin pills that are lower in mg? Will I have bad reaction if I stop taking it?

Hello, Fred! How are you?

I understand your concern, but the reality of your situation is that your organs would suffer far more damage if you don't take the medication and keep your blood sugar under control. Yes, there is some slight risks to taking the Metformin, but these problems only happen to a very small percentage of people that take it.

However, 100% of the people who have diabetes and don't properly keep it under control will suffer organ damage and complications.

Thus, I strongly urge you not to go off of it, without discussing it with your doctor.

The FDA lists its typical side effects as possibly including nausea, dizziness, flatulence and stomach pain.

What are you usual blood sugar levels?

Vernon, thank you for your response. I have been doing well with my blood sugar numbers. I also do a shot of Lantus (35 units) at bedtime. I will ask my doctor whether there are smaller doses of Metformin and maybe if I could take less.
